- When the original is so good why try to make a copy. The British version had a great cast but it was the same scripts that somehow just seemed better in their original outing.

Bea Arthur in an interview for Good Morning Britain said that the script written specifically for them (i.e. Bea, Betty, Rue and Estelle) won't work for other actresses when it's copied verbatim.
i'm british..i perfer golden girls..the actresses in the british version are good actresses in well known shows in britain but you cant beat dorothy ,blanche, rose, sophia
Plus, Meridian should have bought the rights to _Brighton Belles_ in my honest opinion.
Like many people, I grew up with this show in the late 80's when it aired in the UK. I still watch it today each week and the writing is still so good, not to mention the acting. I was excited that our very talented British actresses were going to have a go at this scenario however, I was disappointed that the episodes were more or less identical in the writing to the original. It just wasn't needed if that was the case. I wasn't surprised back then that it wasn't picked up for more episodes especially after the original had only ended the previous year or so. 🤷♂️
I like the theme song.thank you for sharing.
Does anyone have any full episodes of Brighton Belles they could upload to UA-cam? I know it was rubbish (remakes of classic shows are never as good as the original - they are classics for a reason!) but I love Brighton and Sheila Gish, so it's worth watching for those two gorgeous ingredients!
Why does the woman who is supposed to be Blanche look like she's scared sh#tless of the women that are Dorothy and Rose??!
They look like such snobs in that intro. Completely different from the tight knit friendship of the Golden Girls.
Well they are British
The British version of Blanche is literally looking down on Dorothy and Rose.
I'm actually embarrassed that our country really created a British version of the classic golden girls. Really England? You can't REMAKE that show. You just can't. It's like if the Americans remade our only fools and horses US style. It just wouldn't work. Golden girls is American....never ever should of it been made into a British comedy!! Huge mistake! I'm siding the Americans here! 🇺🇸🇺🇸
I agree but it's not uncommon for shows to be re-made across both sides of the pond. This didn't work for lots of reasons and even today, any do not translate well. I think maybe only The Office has translated to the US well though it feels completely different and made a star of Carell. Shameless didn't work, the Americans even tried to remake AbFab I recall. Some shows don't need remaking because if they translate well in their original formats I see no need to try to re-do them. GG was a smash the world over, I honestly don't understand why they thought they needed to try a British version. Part of its charm was seeing Miami Ladies of a certain age getting up to mischief. Brighton hardly has the same allure....
I’ve seen a few British comedy shows here in the US- they were quite funny and I loved them! I’d love to see this British version of the GG but I can’t find it. But definitely- the Golden Girls are classic! No mistake about it 😊
After 15 years of this ricky gervais made his show in the U.S after he have that show in England.
Kinda like America once tried to remake The Vicar of Dibley starring Kirstie Alley.
Ha, I'm American and never heard of Only Fools and Horses. Just looked up a clip. I'll probably watch it now.
I wish there were a few clips of this show
I dont
Brighton Belles, Oh hell no! The Golden girls was it and the best ever
lol i love how they gave all the British actresses similar haircuts to the characters they were supposed to copy.
+Suitman 87 except Blanche. She looks more like Rose/Betty.
It's so weird because we've made US versions of UK shows that did better than the original. We did have some crap ones, but ones that are big in pop culture originated from the UK. Like think of The Golden Girls.
All In the Family was a remake of a UK show. That show spunoff Maude, The Jefferson's, Good Times, Archie Bunker's Place. And because of Maude we got to see Bea Arthur become a legend along with Rue. And because of Maude the creators of The Golden Girls specifically wanted Beau and Rue
Also THREE'S COMPANY, as well as its dire spin off series THE ROPERS and THREE'S A CROWD, were based on British series. As well as SANFORD & SON. THE OFFICE. Then, you have other shows we've tried to remake that just don't work at all... a failed pilot and two flop series were based upon FAWLTY TOWERS.
@@mikurtis1767we also had a failed version of Are You Being Served, and almost had a version of Absolutely Fabulous.
The UK theme song... WHAT?!
I loved watching The Golden Girls in the 80s! I'm currently rewatching full series/seasons of stuff (Just a couple of episodes a night.. Recently finished Curb Your Enthusiasm, Peep Show, and Bread), and now about to start Golden Girls! I don't think I've ever seen Brighton Belles! Jean Boht will always be Mrs Boswell to me, no matter what character she's playing, lol :-)
All four of them very good actresses but I think it was a BIG MISTAKE trying to do a remake of such an iconic show.
If I remember some of the scripts were word for word.
I’d of loved to of seen some clips of this show just to see how the dialogue went
The theme song to the Brighton Belles sounds so daggy haha
does anyone know where I could watch the first episode of Brighton Belles? I can't find it anywhere and I want to watch to compare it to Golden Girls.
Alex Haven Blackburn me too!
And me - full episodes of BB would be fab, I'm a big fan of the late, great Sheila Gish.
Meridian should have bought the rights to _Brighton Belles_ in my honest opinion.
All of these British Actresses were and are (those still with us) great, but this format didn't work. They copied the scripts almost verbatim, and there was no live audience like the GG. It just didn't gel. They could have done something with the premise if they'd spent some time re-writing it to suit the different culture/humour. June Whitfield, when interviewed along with Bea Arthur had it nailed when she said that we expected the words and humour to come out of the mouths of the American actresses because it made sense, but you just didn't believe it from these ladies. None of the British actresses ever spoke about this show again, and there are no snippets of the show on YT either. A shame really because regardless of whether it worked or not, it would be interesting to see if after enough time had passed. Bea Arthur even questioned why they would put the show on while the GG was still showing on-air, even in early re-runs.
Funnily enough, I just saw those two interviews and I remembered what you had said, with Bea and June on Good Morning with Anne and Nick, and before that, Bea on This Morning with Richard and Judy. 😃
Clearly, not really, so far i have not been able to find episodes, clips, or anything about the show other than this videos theme.
Well the three especially Betty is the most recognizable so there's no comparison
Made for Carlton Television... why it failed!
And tbh, Meridian should have bought the rights to that program.
First of all, the theme song is atrocious for BB’s and the women simply didn’t have the same magic.
I had never heard of this, I am an 80's child.... thank god! It looks awful!!
Awful!...The women seem very cold & distant...
I shudder at the memory. It was so poorly scripted and dismally acted it was embarrassing to watch. No wonder ITV pulled it halfway through its first run.
Brighton Belles was awful. Badly acted - it recycled Golden Girls scripts without any shred of understanding of how funny GG was. Embarrassing to watch. Jean Boht in the Sophia role was particularly dreadful.
Brighton Belles PREDATES The Golden Girls US. It is in fact the original.
drobicho wrong. Golden Girls 1985-1992. Brighton Belles 1993.
Look it up man! The facts are there...you just have to look for them.
I sense a bit of sarcasm
Really?
