Thanks for watching and supporting! There's a lot going on in this track so it should keep you busy for a while. For those of you purchasing the Guitar Pro session and PDF Tab I've included an extra PDF and session of the intro guitars as they were originally played. This will help you in recreating the part. Download here: timholmanofficial.com/downloads Please like, subscribe and share to help the channel grow. You rock!
Thank you! That is great to hear because I spent a ridiculous number of hours on this. To the point where I think my wife was getting upset with me. Haha!
Had no idea those guitar parts were reversed! Sounds so good forwards. An album I’ve heard thousands of times and I’ll never be able to listen to the opening the same way again! Looking fwd to One & Justice 🙏
Tim you’re hands down the best teacher on UA-cam. If anyone is on the fence, I highly recommend grabbing the GP file too, having the ability to slow down each section and play along has had me nailing songs in no time. The attention to detail is second to none.
Finally, the tutorial I have been waiting for! Thank you, Tim, for another amazing video. Your detailed explanations and tips are much appreciated, even a novice player like myself can follow and learn. This will keep me busy for a while, but I'm already excited that Master of Puppets is coming soon. Any plans to do ONE or Gojira's Stranded?
Great video. I learn with a metronome so having the counting is a huge help. You are a great teacher!! Im 50 years old and this video has really helped to speed up my right hand.
THANK YOU! Your break down and counting finally helped me learn this main riff. I was always throwing an extra note in it towards the end of the measure because I couldnt understand the timing and was so frustrated trying to figure it out.
And here it is. The “true” exactly how it’s played lesson to Blackened. Tim you’re an incredible transcriber and a brilliant guitarist. Thanks so much for this amazing lesson.
Fantastic lesson. My all time favorite album and this is tied for my favorite song on that album. I don't think I've ever heard the intro played forwards like that. I almost think it sounds better that way.
It boggles my mind how you do not have more subs than you have. You are very accurate with your lessons and the quality is good. I don't know it really puzzles me thanks for the lessons...
Oh my god ! seriously i didn't even know that in the original recording the intro was reversed and what's more interesting is that the unreversed version that was originally played sounds even more beautiful :)
Best tutorial I've seen of this song, by far. Kudos, and thank you for taking the time to make such a well produced, clean and concise video. Do the whole album!
Bro! This video is FANTASTIC! Subb'd! My wife hears me practicing and I'm sure she always thinks there's something missing. I've explained 20 times that when she's listening on the radio, she's often hearing 4 guitar parts played by one person. Then she looks at me like I'm speaking Chinese. The way you laid out the reversed intro in your video shows that so well. I'm gonna make her watch it 30 times, lol. I'm still consistently amazed by how heavy Metallica can make standard tuning sound.
Great job Tim! Please do Disciples of the Watch, Eerie Inhabitants or Alone in the Dark next time, I can't understand why no one publishes guitar lessons on how to play Testament songs. They are one of the greatest thrash metal bands of the 80s and Alex Skolnick is a phenomenal guitarist, yet there are almost no tutorials available. Thank you! Lorenzo
Love 'Em All! Your guitar tutorials have helped me so immensely, seriously thanks. Will you also do To Live is To Die though? Really love that one and would love to have such an in-detail video for that too from you
Thanks brotherman for all the mind-numbing hard work you put in to make sure all the hard work and hours that we put in to learn these tunes are accurate as can be!! signed- one of your proud students...
Yes, I need to go back and put together a package for the older videos. I didn't put out the Guitar pro/pdf when the channel first started. I want to get a package together for every video.
Before the B flat lick in the main riff there's an open A. It doesn't go 7 8 7, it goes 7 8 0 then the b flat power chord. James talks about it with Jason on the riff tapes when he's learning the riff. Edit: It's actually 'easier' because you have a split second extra to move back to the first fret.
Yeah, this one took a while longer then expected to get out. Lol. Bark at the Moon is a good suggestion though. I think it would do well on the channel.
Tim the level of detail you go into withe solo is next level. Thank you so much for this. However, it's a crime you haven't done more Megadeth on your channel! Would absolutely love to see your take on Megadeth's Hangar 18. Keep up the fantastic work.
Yeah, that tab for Blackened has to be one of the worst tabs I've seen. Virtually nothing is correct. I don't fault them for trying their best back in the day but what I don't understand is why that book is STILL on the market.
Thanks man! I'm getting tons of requests to finish off the Puppets album. Master will be next but maybe I'll sneak in another track from Justice before I finish the album.
Hi Tim, great lesson as always! Just one question, because every time i listen to blackened I can’t help but notice the timing of the main riff after the solo sounds kinda weird. What are your thoughts on that?
There is a slight timing issue with the last couple of beats underneath the solo. Almost like it slows down a fraction. Also, the end of the solo is solidly in 4/4 time. With the 7/4 timing coming back in I could see that sounding weird. I can't think or hear of anything else that's causing an issue.
Thanks! Yeah, there's a lot of guitars in the intro. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how I was going to show what was going on in that part. Hopefully it's clear enough.
I’m curious because the one thing I never see in tabs…. What is James doing during the bridge when he hangs on the E chord? In ‘89 he slides his hand down near the 12th fret. Any ideas of what he’s doing? My guess have been he’s grabbing the 12th fret of the E and sliding it back up between the E chords, or maybe just sliding the notes on 2nd fret A and S strings down to the 12th. Please help answer that it’s been bugging me for years
Congratulations! I don't even play guitar... (Although about two decades ago I used to...) So I still have the taste for it, and I don't lose the desire to play again. A question from someone with a lot of ignorance about it: why and why place the intro in reverse, does it have any didactic purpose, and if so what is it? Thank you and congratulations for creating such detailed content, there are those of us who really value it, at this moment I subscribe to your channel and give it Like. Keep going my friend! 😃

I'm going to master the bass part to this song!
I love that you included the complete Bass transcription as well.
That's hilarious. If you record that track, make sure you hit the mute button.
😂😂
Dude! This is amazing! The best breakdown of this song I have ever seen.
Thank you! That is great to hear because I spent a ridiculous number of hours on this. To the point where I think my wife was getting upset with me. Haha!
A little trivia. That main riff was written by Jason Newstead on the bass. One of the few songwriting credits he ever got in metallica
Best guitar teacher on UA-cam. Also, the best explanation of Blackened.
Agreed!
Had no idea those guitar parts were reversed! Sounds so good forwards. An album I’ve heard thousands of times and I’ll never be able to listen to the opening the same way again! Looking fwd to One & Justice 🙏

This is by far the BEST tutorial of that song i‘ve ever seen 👌
My goodness. Its a masterpiece with just the very first intro before anything else happens
Finally, someone who does the intro the correct way! Thanks!
Best teacher ever!
Thanks so much for doing Blackened.
One my absolute favourites
This channel is so awesome. Great to see someone teach music so well, while being such a badass on the guitar!
Haha, thanks man!
Finally, the tutorial I have been waiting for!

Any plans to do ONE or Gojira's Stranded?
Thank you very much! I'm planning on now finishing the rest of the Puppets album before moving on to more Justice stuff. Master of Puppets is next!
Kirk, now it's time to learn your solo!
Fantastic job, love the tone. Please tell us more about your gear and setup to achieve this sound.
And here it is. The “true” exactly how it’s played lesson to Blackened. Tim you’re an incredible transcriber and a brilliant guitarist. Thanks so much for this amazing lesson.
Cheers Edward!
Thank you for sharing. All your videos are awesome and easy to understand. You are a great teacher of learning guitar!
Thank you!
Fantastic lesson. My all time favorite album and this is tied for my favorite song on that album. I don't think I've ever heard the intro played forwards like that. I almost think it sounds better that way.

Thanks so much Tim, really a very clear explanation of how this song!
Your timing is crazy! Was just looking for quality tutorial for this song. Thanks man🤘
You're welcome! 🤘
Thank you for this amazing lesson
Many thanks for this song.... The best teacher in youtube🙌
Oh my god ! seriously i didn't even know that in the original recording the intro was reversed and what's more interesting is that the unreversed version that was originally played sounds even more beautiful :)
Absolutely fantastic lesson 👏

Hi Tim,
I just discovered your channel, just fantastic!! I subscribed just after seeing your last video 😃
Congratulations for your incredible work!!!
Thanks! Glad you found the channel!

I'm still consistently amazed by how heavy Metallica can make standard tuning sound.
Thank you! I know what you mean, I've always thought this song is heavy as hell and it's not even downtuned.
Great job Tim! Please do Disciples of the Watch, Eerie Inhabitants or Alone in the Dark next time, I can't understand why no one publishes guitar lessons on how to play Testament songs. Amazing transcription to a difficult song 👏
I think the intro sounds super cool the original way. But I’m super glad they reversed it. It sounds so damn cool
Good job. The pre-solo harmony part is wrong in may tabs online, but I think this is quite accurate! I'll take this version as the one to learn.
I love your lessons, thanks!
You're welcome man!
Brilliant Tim!
Thanks man!
Dude! Rock on brotha, easily subscribed 🤘

It's always been one of my favorites too 🤘
Great stuff, Tim. Will you release a Guitar Pro/PDF tab of Call of Ktulu as well?
Yes, I need to go back and put together a package for the older videos. I didn't put out the Guitar pro/pdf when the channel first started. I want to get a package together for every video.
thank you, this lessons are so good

Outstanding work! This must have taken you a lot of hours!

Tim is the man! 🤟🤟🤟
Oh yeah!!! \../. Killer lesson
Selut for your hardwork.. this is hardest song .. ❤
The tab book I got in the 1990's butchered this song. It's funny since there is a video about this somewhere
Yeah, that tab for Blackened has to be one of the worst tabs I've seen. Virtually nothing is correct. I don't fault them for trying their best back in the day but what I don't understand is why that book is STILL on the market.
any chance we can get a cheat sheet on recreating the tone (especially for the lead)?
i’m waiting for harvest of sorrow
I hit the sub button faster than papa het is able to downpick😎 What a great lesson! Keep up the good work🤘🏻
Thanks for the sub!
Absolutely love your videos dude, You gotta do And Justice for All next!

Ugh the Harmony is so layered lol., great Video Tim
Thanks! Yeah, there's a lot of guitars in the intro. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how I was going to show what was going on in that part. Hopefully it's clear enough.

Brilliant!
Can you do one for damage inc?

could never put my finger on why the intro sounds so otherworldly and now i know. always thought they used an E bow
Aahhh .. hardest song .. but lov to play ❤❤
