People think you can just make speed happen but its more like a symptom of accurate play, relaxation and muscle memory. The secret to speed is to play accurately and meditate on it so that your muscle memory picks up only minimal efficient movement for tone and accuracy. The best tool for speed is the metronome. Whenever my playing feels loose, lazy or inaccurate I return to my metronome and play beginner speeds so that I can see what it feels like to play those licks with unrelenting perfection. The metronome will inform you in areas where you're actually slurring and stumbling and trying to make up time. With the metronome you can feel the space between the notes and gain an effortless mastery over the notes in time. You may actually be surprised that notes you were rushing actually have allot of space between and you will discover you have more time to get there. If you do this, speed will synergize as if by magic. By working on your accuracy and muscle memory you afford your hands the benefit of Bruce-Lee-like relaxation. You will reach for notes as casually as you pick up a glass of water. You will strike so fast that it is as if you speak banjo as a first language. For all my banjo buddies out there this is the secret METRONOME, ACCURACY, RELAXATION, MEDITATION.
I also highly agree your master of words makes my choice even grater on learning how to play I also to love the banjo never played one but I just bought my first and I am going to give a 100% thank you William potts
Yeah and keep your fingers out of each other's way, and close to the strings. The least amount of work you have to use to strike the string the better. I try to keep my pinky and ring finger firmly planted in the same position. I practice finger rolls light the night tuned gCGCC it's very mediative . I've even passed out almost into a trance like state, and woken up still playing.
You are an encouragement to everyone thinking about or trying to learn a musical instrument. And..you having so much fun! Your enthusiasm shines through. Thanks for sharing the video.
You sounded real good I played since 1974 and I couldn’t tell her you keeping your ring finger and a little finger on the bend your head. It sounds really good don’t worry about speed it’ll come to you if you get too fast to start off with it will be Jumbled up take your time you sounded really good. Keep up the good work.
Tempo and accuracy are the most important to work on as a beginner, speed will come later with patience, practice and experience. Forget the fancy stuff as a beginner and If you make a mistake (and you will, we all do) keep playing - do not stop but jump right back in do not lose that tempo, especially when playing with someone else. You'll do okay as you have already shown, now, you go girl!
Thanks so much for all of the comments . . . I haven't been playing AT ALL recently, that's why there haven't been any further posts . . . your comments serve as needed inspiration! kt
awesome, yrs ago i wanted to play bought one n found out the head was bas n sold it. Now 20 yrs ltr the banjo is calling me again everytime i listen to one. Yr doing great!!
I've played banjo around 24 years now, and I still remember my first song..Cripple Creek which you are doing very well on for 1 month of playing. Don't give up and keep practicing. Kudos.. =)
There is no age, or rather, it's never too late to learn to play an instrument, to anyone willing to do so and thinking "oh, I'm too old for this" or "Maybe if some years ago". I've had 65 year old students from scratch and they have all the patience needed to learn (sometimes kids are in a hurry to learn and show). I learn a lot from older students, and they they've had the best time of their lives learning to play. Totally inspiring since sometimes we forget why we learnt in the first place.
Thank you for sharing! I've been playing for a month as well. Anyone that wants to learn an instrument truly CAN do it, the trick is... you really gotta WANT to, and that will make you practice more, concentrate better, and try harder. If you do all that, then you WILL learn, just give it time and do not rush. So I hope people feel more at ease just knowing that anything is possible :)
very nice! it's fun to see someone else working through the banjo basics. i'm just now learning to add in chord progression to my roll patterns- kudos for what you've got already! keep it up!
I just got my banjo for my birthday. I never have played but it becomes close to the heart. Being 45, I miss the days when everyone set on the porch and we could talk as friends. In upstate NY, we are not from Appalachia, but yet we still made sure we all were held close.Keep those home town feeling's close!!
Fantastic for one month. A quick word of advice a pro gave me once that really helped.....don't worry about the left hand, just make a chord and roll away - and if the rolls are really good and clean, it will sound good. My playing got much better when I followed that...and now my left hand has gotten better as a result as well.
This is awesome. I'm embarrassed to admit that I have owned a banjo for about 5 years and have no idea how to play it. It seems so daunting. This video is very encouraging. Now I just need to find a place to take lessons. Keep up the good work.
What a fantastic job. For just a month of practice and never playing an instrument before this you're doing just great!! Whatever you do, don't stop. Great job young lady, and well done.
I enjoyed your video! Your progress after just a month is amazing.I bought my banjo 3 weeks ago. and also practice an hour (sometimes more) a day. I am going through the same progression of learning rolls and struggling with Cripple Creek. Please keep at it. Look forward to that next video.
This is pretty good, I learned a full song on banjo in one day and perfected it over the week. It can all work. 😉 Believe in yourself and have pacience
Well done you sound really nice. I,m just about to but a banjo, ive been playin the guitar for seven years but i really fancy a change and ive fell in love with the banjo sound!!! well done again,,
Wow. I wish after a month I could do half that. I'm still trying to get basic rolls down. Not as easy an instrument to learn as I thought. Thanks for the inspiration.
Practice makes perfect only if one practices perfection...what practice make is permanent...this is from martial arts training but applies to music as well...practice slowly and perfectly...you will become proficient and smooth....slow equals smooth...smooth equals fast...you are doing great...keep up the hard work...
Hey! That was fantastic. I hope you put some more videos on since it has been three years now playing the banjo. You give me hope and inspiration that I can learn to play. I started playing many years ago, but sold my banjo so I could buy a plane ticket to Hawaii, no regrets about that, but now twenty years later I am thinking of getting another banjo.
You'll get it. Just keep it up. You have to want it. You have to want it and give it time and it'll happen slowly at first but then before you know it, you'll be able to keep up with anyone. Just pick it up everyday and play something everyday accept the days you can't but y'know, almost everyday. It shouldn't be a chore y'know? Have fun with it and make up your own songs. That helps get your fingers used to playing a little more adeptly. That's how I got over the hump from absolute beginner to pretty good. I don't play banjo yet but that's my next instrument I think.
I think you are doing fantastic....I too am a novice player...but I dont get to practice as often as you have.....I think you are a great inspiration on the banjo. keep smilin, olehippy13 former vietnam medic novice banjo picker
I agree with Natalie, in months time not only have you learned the strings, rolls, slides, pull offs, picking and tunes but you memorized them, THAT IS GREAT! No Way should you not continue to pursue banjo playing you have a real talent for music. I began playing Banjo December 15, 2012 to date. However now my focus is learning chords and scales. Push yourself and Play that Banjo!
Nice job, I am a guitarist who recently picked up the banjo. And I tell you - it's much different! I have always played with a guitar pick, so I really have no experience at all with finger picking. If you could please share some book or video titles to possibly help me pick it up I'd appreciate it!
Great job, you! I play a little Mississippi Boat Paddle myself young lady and I'm very impressed. Does the banjo put a smile on your face and warm your heart? Find yourself a guitar player to play the chords in time and you'll feel the beat. You'll be able to apply those rolls to any song! Go play some banjo!!!!!
As a relatively accomplished bagpiper who also started that journey (years ago) with no prior musical experience, and one who is looking to jump into this, a word of advice. Definitely keep it slow, and develop the rhythm correctly. I understand the temptation to speed up-I STILL fight it, 15 years on-but tonality and accuracy count. Especially when you begin to learn more tunes. Thats when, if you havent worked on the basics, you start getting sloppy, and it can be heard. Very good though!! Keep up the hard work!!! I hope to start in on this eventually myself. Maybe over the winter, while I am not busy.
I've been playing lead metal and blues guitar for 20 years I just got a banjo about a week ago and I got to say the rolls on the right hand are really hard to get down but one thing I can say is speed comes in time.
Keep it up, the first year is hard, depending how quick you pick it up, but for 1 month you are doing really well. I am trying to learn foggy mountain breakdown at the moment, and also duelling banjos, but no free lessons for that one. post another video in a month to show your progress.
+zinnerman11 Thanks for the encouragement . . it has been VERY difficult, but also VERY rewarding. I've been playing almost 1.5 years now, please look at my channel and see my progress videos! Time for a new video. I just dropped by because I've been trying to learn "Turn Turn Turn" on guitar and learned that Roger McGuin was using "banjo rolls" in the intro and thru the song. I stopped by to see what a banjo roll is. Cheers from Los Angeles.
That was only 4 minutes of banjo. I feel cheated.
