    The Canon r5 is first and foremost a camera for professional photographers. Even if the marketing is video oriented, it is intended for photographers. The Sony a7siii looks super cool, but it's not for photographers. Comparing the Sony a7siii and the r5 Cannon is irrelevant. You have to compare the Sony a7siii to the lumix s1h / blackmagic / lumix gh5 etc.

    • @Imam_Gueri_Sport
      @Imam_Gueri_Sport 4 роки тому

      dottorcarlone Sony never goes beyond 4K. And exceeding 4K would be contrary to the philosophy of the a7s series which are optimised for low light. The two devices are in different categories.

    • @dottorcarlone
      @dottorcarlone 4 роки тому

      Imam Gueri you re not really informed. Sony has patented a quad bayer 48 mp sensor that can turn into 12 mp sensor for video with no pixel binning and pixel to pixel readout. The quad pixels arrays receive light information as one big pixel. Probably sony will utilise this sensor with the 48 mp still capability deactivated. But i personally think it wont be the case cause a 9 million pixels evf wouldnt make sense on a video centric camera. If this sensor will see the light it will be revolutionary. If they decide not to exceed 4k will be only to not overlap with the fx9

    • @scuderianorreno
      @scuderianorreno 4 роки тому +4

      32 bit float is a bit moot unless the preamps are up to snuff. And so far, the preamps in pretty much all cameras has been pretty crap. I'd rather see better preamps first, then they can add 32 float for those I-can't-be-bothered-with-setting-the-correct-audio-level-videographers out there.

      Fredrik and cdave2006, 100% agree. In camera audio, especially in mirrorless, is and has always been unusable garbage. Until buyers demand good audio, it will continue to be that way. If you're a mirrorless user, do your self a favor and buy a pair of Tentacles and a good audio recorder. Also, 32-bit is overkill for dialog if you spend even a tiny bit of effort in gain staging and level setting. You can buy a used Mix Pre 3 for under $400.00, put your mirrorless on top of it and end up with world class audio for a few hundred dollars.

    If you are on Sony, waiting a little makes perfect sense. If you are already on RF or EF, and you own canon glass or cine cameras, the r6 and r5 are realistically the best canon will release for the next 2 years but I'll still wait, because the a7s3 might be so good or maybe the a7iv that might trigger a price drop in the canons. I don't think anyone needs the r5 immediately, anyone looking at buying it really is just trying to future proof or be ahead of the curve

    • @ZXTech
      @ZXTech 4 роки тому

      @Obi-Wan Kenobi Yeap but imo hybrid shooters wouldn't need more than 4k, and those that need more than 4k rarely need stills, which leaves great more specialised options like the bmpcc and zcam available for those people. I still think that this r5 and r6 launch might have an effect similiar to the 5dm2 though. I love how the r5 is a "dare to dream" product from canon, which we haven't seen in a looooong time

    One thing that will hammer your system when using raw and will slow down playback is hard drive speed, if you are using a crappy nvme then it's not going to have the through put to supply the data quick enough to the decoder to playback at full speed. CPU will also be a limiting factor here, wierd part is you are using a quadro 5000 for video editing, this is designed as a 3d animation and physics modelling card...

In my phone that has a good screen, it's hard to see the difference between 720p and 1080p. So why the hassle and expenditure on data storage for filming on that high resolution?

    C-LOG 2 coming in the first update! There's your HDR boost. I remember seeing somewhere that the rolling shutter will be "improved", though I don't remember where. I just wonder if it will be the same as you get from the EOS R, given that in 8K it'll be pushed through that oversampling process... could that somehow affect the rolling shutter performance? Honestly, if I'm getting good 1080@120, I think I'll be happy with that because that will be reserved for "C-Roll"; that stuff I'd just be adding here and there (especially if I need to let the camera cool off) and I'm not really concerned at all with but still could put to use if needed. My EOS R won't get 120 anywhere! BUT, it'll shoot very similar looking video and photos, color-wise, and will be right there for a ton of the workload stuff of regular, good video (given that I'll have to use my Sigma 14-24 Art to lower the crop, then edit in post to get it straightened up). Upside...? Well, the Sigma is a f1.4 lens, so better low-light when doing that.
    Great video. I'm a newb, so feel free to tell me where I miscalculated above. I ordered my R5 a few minutes after launch, and wouldn't consider canceling in the least, especially since the announcement about the firmware update is already good, and will be better, either at launch or shortly thereafter.
    I love my EOS R, and even my old 70D, and I have Canon EF lenses (and compatible) and extenders, so I'm good to go for a while on glass.

    One feature the R5 has that isn’t being talked about much is the 500,000 shutter rating (same as 1DXiii), the A7Sii had 200,000, will the iii get a better shutter? personally I am a photographer and don’t really expect to ever shoot more than a few minutes of video at a time 😅 Excited to hear the 28-70:f2 (my new go to lens) will get 8 Stops with IBIS, even without IS built into the lens, and it seems like shooting at 1.2 will be amazingly reliable, even with movement - main disappointments are ; SanDisk doesn’t have a 256gb UHS II (ideally would like 2 cards the same size to shoot redundant), I would have preferred 2x CFexpress, and going from DSLR to mirrorless means significantly less photos per battery as well... (300 rating, which is 1/3 of the 5d4 900 rating...) The first few weeks will be interesting to see how battery life goes, and whether I am fine to continue with carrying extra batteries, or whether I do need to get a battery grip :/ never have really liked using them

      Ayyitsjayy the A7Sii shutter rating is still higher than the 5d4 (what I am currently using), some people prefer the low light performance of lower megapixel cameras as well, it can also make it easier to avoid shake, realistically the cameras serve different purposes - better specs don’t matter if it doesn’t serve your purpose

      Ayyitsjayy it’s even more mind blowing that the A7S line is compared to the canon mirrorless and DSLR PHOTO cameras. And while they bash the Sony A7S for “poor photo quality,” they bash the Canon cameras for the lackluster video features. I think the ones complaining are never the ones actually making money. My guess is spec for spec the Canon r5 will be the better camera however I think if the r5's overheating issues are as indicated when the production models ship, the Sony might actually turn out to be the better value camera. On the r5 the 8k is really just a bonus to me whether it overheats or not, however overheating in some 4k modes is the actual deal breaker for me and thats why if the sony is doing whether 4k 60 or 120 with no overheating..it would be more appealing for me.

      hippie hippo I think the overheating is just completely a non-issue. When will you seriously film non-stop for 25 Minutes in 8K? Exactly, NEVER! Same with 4 K 120, this is for b-roll only, and typically you look for a shot, you try it, filming takes a minute or so, and then you need more time to find the next shot. For everything else, 4K 24 or even FHD will be plenty enough, even though I guess if you want to do FHD you will be better off wit the R6

      It is crazy to compare the R5 45MP with the Sony A7iii 12/24MP camera while the Sony camera is really primarily a competitor the R6 with a 20MP sensors for use in low light and action photography. The R5 is quite a different product. It is not $25K cinema camera and comparing it's time limitations with cameras that do have the same resolution or frame seems silly and possibly biased. Apples and oranges can not be meaningfully compared. The A7iiii has an unknown price and could be or more less than expected. The pixels are large and that sounds like the R6 which is pretty similar to what many think the Sony will cost. The R5 is for the 45MP market of 8k and 30-45 MP image data. Cropping is easier here. FPS is slower than if fewer MP would be used but cropping is critical for many still profession "must get the killer shop" photographers. I like your videos but I wish it seems less like trashing what a camera might not based another website but rather comparing similiar cameras with factual data and being careful about speculation. I agree with Hippie Hippo that R5 will be better for my use the A7III and if you are buying it for 8k or even 4K video features you must have you must wait. I have only ever shot 2K for long periods but I want 8K for brief clips generating 33MP stills. I have a substantial need for that. I am not a film maker but an action grabber. Heat is way down on my list of concerns near the bottom. Weather sealing and durability with mistreatment are higher on my list that R6 is less rugged when abused than the R5 which like the EOS 5D MkIV is most likely well sealed and build tank even if you screw and it acutually may survive if you drop it or it's lenses. Who doesn't car about that? You pay price for that but it can be worth if you use it seriously. Glass is where money has always been.

      @@gundisrambo9054 It's not just 8K. If you look at the specs, you're also limited to 30 minutes at 4K 30. It doesn't say anything about 24, but it's not too far off. It's probably because it downsamples from a higher rez. We'll have to look to real-world usage reports to know if this will be an issue, but if this is the case, it's a problem form documentary, events, etc.

      All the tests were done on pre production models, we gotta wait for the actual models to be tested on. And most videographers don't film constantly for >30mins. If you want to be serious about videography you need a cinema body. Otherwise most people use multiple cameras to shoot video so 30mins shouldn't be a big issue - remember sonys use to overheat and shut off? Sony users used multiple bodies to get around this problem.

    2) overheating and recording times: can this be solved with external recorder;
    3) lowlight shooting;

    When Kenji Tanaka talked about really big pixels, the IMX 521 CQR sensor immediately came to my mind. This sensor with 15Mpixel may be ideal for the upcomming "A7S3". This Quad Bayer design has also a 60 Mpixel capability. If it could be used in both modes, you could get a low light camera with excellent colors as well as a high resolution 60Mpixel camera. Not only would this be an excellent video camera, but also an excellent stills camera. Now this would "exeed my expectations".

That's one of the biggest differences between those cameras and you are only mentioning it for a couple of seconds. With 12MP the A7SIII is completely unusable for a lot of photography work and I was really hoping for Sony to at least use a 20+ MP Sensor which would be plenty for most use cases. This is one of the toughest decisions I've ever had to make in terms of video gear. I have a 5D3 and a bunch of Canon glass, had a 1DX2 but sold right before the 3 came out. I use Canon for stills but started using Sony for video in 2016. I have an A7S2, A73 and a handful of Sony lenses. I have R5 preordered right now, if I get that I can get rid of all my Sony gear and go back to all Canon, so that would declutter my gear and it the R5 would end up costing me nothing. The overheating stuff with the R5 is scaring me, although I'd be using it in 4k24 most of the time and that doesn't have overheating issues. I really wish the thing just did 4K Raw instead of 8K Raw. A7S3 sounds like it would be better as a 4k camera but it would keep me having to manage 2 systems. Really tough call.
