    You're missing still camera features in a video camera and not appreciating professional features because you actually don't really need them. The Sony fx6 and the Sony a7s iii are actually very similar cameras. For one, they share similar sensors. Phillip Bloom did a review on the fx6 and said that it was basically a Sony mirrorless camera in a cinema body. Ultimately, I plan on sticking with the Sony fx6 because my industry friends, who operate Stanton Jimmy jibs for the NFL and Bally Sports, tell me that 90% of the shoots they work on (in film production environments) are using the Sony fx6 right now. Other UA-camrs I’ve listened to have also said that it functions as an “A cam” and collaborates well on set.
    That being said, I do see the value in owning a Sony a7s iii. I would definitely use it for videography if I wanted something quick and clean, and I would pair it as a “B cam” in an interview setting. It would have some limits as a rental product. I would only rent it as part of a package or loan to a filmmaker friend but probably not as the main cinema camera for a film set. Anyway, just some thoughts. I did extensive research on this camera as I was weighing pros and cons of different cameras for when I chose to upgrade. The FX6 is the perfect camera for my workflow. Thanks for your review. 🤙

PS... the c70 has all cable mounting on the left side... so if you use this camera on your shoulder you get all the cables in your face 😜

    As a video professional working in NYC, the MXF container is a positive not a negative. HEVC is such a headache to bring in to post without transcoding, and with HEVC you lose per frame metadata and intra-frame recording. MP4 is a delivery container, not an acquisition or intermediate container. Honestly ive seen a lot of people hate on XAVC-I wrapped in MXF because there's this myth that it's "legacy" but in pro circles using a camera that only records in HEVC LongGOP would be a deal breaker.

  • @bonishikawa9495
    @bonishikawa9495 3 роки тому +3

    Very interesting review. I think it all depends on how you work. I have a fx6 as an main camera and a7s3 for sub. For gimbal work, I use A7s3 so it does not matter for me the lack of 3.5m audio jack of Fx6. Most of the problems can be solved by future firmware updates. Your said you go for 2 A7s3 rather than Fx6 and A7s3. But latter pair compensate each cameras weakness such as a variable ND and a view finder and so on. Besides, when hand holding Fx6, it is difficult to use touch screen unless you put shoulder rig on. The reliability is the most important for a professional work and in that sense, Fx6 is the way to go in my opinion.

    • @jambononi
      @jambononi 3 роки тому +3

      It is annoying though, because there’s literally another camera using exactly the same technology and they just haven’t chosen to put in the superior touch screen software and menus. Obviously it’s not an absolute deal breaker, but there’s no doubt that touch tracking auto focus would be really really useful if you could tap and for it to work. And again adding a 3.5mm jack to such a compact cinema camera is just such an obvious thing they should have done. People in cinema space often get defensive about things like that “we only use xlr” but it’s just not true anymore and it’s such a small implementation that would make a huge difference to so many productions, why not just do it? Sometimes xlr isn’t worth the size for the situation or the price etc, just add a stupid little port, it’s not an iPhone.... The number of technologies that come out and they miss out such annoying little things that makes years of work just a tiny bit annoying every day, especially when you can see they could do it on a cheaper smaller camera released in the same year.

    Hi Max, I've been watching your videos for a few years now, and one thing that makes me question your camera reviews is the lack of context. Without seeing examples of your paid work (not just daytime exterior slow-motion shots) it is difficult to really understand why you like some products and not others. You frequently point out that "if you use this product to feed your family...," so why would you review a cinema camera to do corporate work and then give them a negative review by saying the cinema camera is not a good financial choice....., Do you make short films or shoot movies? If so would you recommend a a7s iii ?? Then again if you didn't review every camera out there regardless of its intended use you would have fewer videos and less drama? We all know drama is good for yt channels!
    I also checked the links in the About Page of your channel and they are all dead. Does this mean that youtube is your primary source of income?

      Yes, it looks like Sony is not shipping any FX6 cameras. One of the largest retailer on the East coast received only two units. I’m expecting my camera in the next shipment as per my camera store. But that may be as far away as February.
      So why the delay? There was a fire at the AKM factory that makes some components for Sony. Initially, we believed that the FX6 was unaffected by this, but I have it on good authority that this was not the case. So we might be looking at considerable back-order delays.

Sure, A7S3 is a better film camera but the A73 takes the better picutres, it's a much better allrounder and it's not like video mode would be bad :-P It's no coincidence that it kind of turned into a youtuber / content creator "industry standard" just like rode microphones. But anyway it's much more about the lenses and what you can do with it rather than the body. Daniel Schiffer / Peter Lindgren have a lot of cool videos shot on a73 if you wanna take a look. and regarding 7c there are tons of good reviews on youtube. I believe the Sony K3M mic adapter is also not shipping either to any retailers.

    I've owned the A7S3 for over half a year, and I think it's a video monster. But it's not as professional in many ways as the FX6. DCI4K, the best built-in ND filter, more professional buttons, etc.
    To achieve DCI4 K on A7S3, I bought Ninjia V. However, the heavier body and more money didn't give me a satisfactory picture(low light situation). The built-in ND of the FX6 greatly increases the flexibility of dual native ISO. The manual setting of high or low ISO can avoid awkward positions like iso 10000 on A7S3... (This is really painful). Finally, though, the A7S3 is very powerful for shot video. But you can't deny it's still a DLSR body. So, the buttons aren't exactly suitable for video work (the new menu does some redeeming).

      Idk, I have the A7S III and the XLR-K3M, and I’m keeping my preorder for the FX6. The ability to turn off noise reduction, turn off sharpening, amazing EVND tech ( game changing for outside shooting) and S-Cinetone make this a worthy addition. I think the FX6 will prove to be a major win. I plan on doing a comparison to the Canon C70 once Sony resumes shipments. • @TheTechnoPilot
      @TheTechnoPilot 3 роки тому +1

      @@NONE2NONE it can be both physical aspects of sensor development, it will usually be the algorithm that does the bayer pattern conversion of luminance levels from sensor to colour image saved to file. This can improve both by more development but also for artificial differentiation of the camera lines. Note that truthfully, while Cinetone pleasing, it’s actually a stylized look with Sony’s default r.709 being more tonally accurate, so they could argue that it’s not a replacement for normal profile. The point however being I suspect there is zero technical reason why the A7SIII couldn’t have Cinetone, or exactly match the FX9.

    • @angryrabbitproductions1690
      @angryrabbitproductions1690 3 роки тому

      It’s hard to say, my gut tells me it’s mostly just firmware. However, the power draw from the FX6 is clearly greater than that of the A7S III. While one has a fan, this is likely required as the sensor is being pushed harder; perhaps utilizing features that are not used in the mirrorless variant? One thing is certain, while they use similar technology, these cameras remain different in several important ways.

    I've heard the FX6 footage is less digital and more robust when color grading. I'll wait for your review and see but the XLRs in the handle plus the limitation of shooting raw with the Ninja V, which is more combinient sidewise than the bulky shogun are making me going toward the combination of the A7S plus the Pocket 6k.

    This is so weird. Consumers have made it so DSLR style still photography cameras are now rated higher than cinema cameras for actual entry level professional cinema production. Since consumers stopped buying fancy video cameras for home use, they forced the camera manufacturers to put all their time and resources into making better DSLR cameras. The situation has created a weird void, where camcorders have worse picture quality and lower technology than DSLR cameras. The next big boom will be FX6 style cinema cameras, priced within reach of a home enthusiast and podcaster. I will buy one as soon as it has proper auto focus. Come on Nikon!
