This absolutely wild to me - I’d actually love to hear more as the GFX50R is THE medium format camera I want to own over all others.
Could you expand a little on why you prefer the X-pro1 images in comparison?

@@FeralGinger Yes. I’ve been a Nikon shooter for 25+ years, but didn’t like the size of the new Z-lenses and finally went to Fuji. With Fuji, I have the possibility to go really small if I want to, that’s a great plus for my kind of work. I have actually used the X-pro1 for a few photo reportages lately. The autofocus isn’t the best, but compared to the Nikon D600 I’ve shot for years, it’s more precise. Continuous focus is terrible, but with a bit of planning, it has worked ok. I do miss the fat, juicy full frame sensor of the Nikons now and then in demanding light, but are mostly really happy with what I get from the Fuji. I actually have an X-T3, but somehow like the files from the old X-pro1 better.
@@BackwoodsBikepacking Thank you so much for the response! Wow, this is a really interesting view given your history with Nikon! The X-Pro1 definitely makes for great documentary style shots but I've got to be honest, I HATED wrestling the continuous autofocus, I had quite bad luck with it and when shooting the animal portraiture I actually shot it in single point focus exclusively! Even more interesting that you seem to be drawn to the X-Pro1 magic sensor when the XT-3 is no potato haha
Given that size is your biggest reason for changing to the system, what glass do you primarily use?
@@FeralGinger I formulated myself badly regarding continuous focus: It is terrible, so I have had to rely on single point focus with a bit of planning instead (which was basically my approach with Nikon D600).
Oh, and I have only lightly dipped my toes in the Fuji system and are using the dinky little XF18 f2, XF35 f1.4 and the XF56 f1.2. The new 18 mm is tempting, but it's a big piece of glas.

I'm 4yrs in with my xpro1 and I must say that I love it! Whenever I go to do some street photography I also chose the xpro1 over my xt1 and sony a7iii. Granted I dnt have any automatic lens, so idk about the auto focus but the vintage lens + the xpro1 is amazing! I cnt forget the shutter noise, the color from this camera, then the analog controls. This camera have landed me in 2 magazines and received a high praise from a professional in a competition. Even though I didn't place.

I bought the Xpro1 in 2012. I was going to buy a Leica M6, but I met a senior guy from Fuji at a wedding and he said Fuji will discontinue file production soon. That tipped my decision. Love the camera and pixels are cheaper than film too. Very good honest review.
Fantastic story and glad to hear you're enjoying it! Pixels are DEFINITELY cheaper than film, I still shoot my workhorse Nikon F3 and my Mamiya 645 but the costs of film are getting astronomical!

Great video, I have owned my X-pro1 for 6 years and love it, I still reach for it when I don't need a fast auto focusing camera, I do own the XH-1 which is awesome but the X-pro 1 with the much maligned 18mm original lens is just incredible for landscape and even some street shooting, It slows my photography down in a positive way.

I know they've just announced the newest version of the 18mm but to me, it's the form factor or the original that keep's it appealing! The XH-1 is SUCH a stellar camera! I'm yet to get the chance to play with one but was VERY close to getting one a little while back! What glass do you match with the XH-1?

In this day and age for seeking happiness by burning money, I like to always remember that there have been great photographers in the past when they shot with a pinhole camera or a film. To be honest, I believe any camera from around 2010 onwards can be used pretty efficiently, the standard is SO high now, unfortunately too many are obsessed with the highest megapixel count and the cleanest image rather than challenging themselves to be better photographers. Haha and I will try and shoot film forever but I do feel the prices are getting absolutely obnoxious nowadays but I still get a roll of portra when I can, Thank you so much for the sub,

Hi. This was great to discover :-) I also bought this one about five years ago, together with two lenses: 27 mm 2.8 and 18 mm 2.0. Always used it for travel photography, just recently in studio (don't ask me why I didn't do this before.....). Bought recently the 56 mm 1.2 R APD. Fenomenal ! Was thinking of buying a newer Fuji, but will wait now :-))

I got an Х-М1. Same sensor, same mount, a lot smaller than x-pro1. Love everything about it. And the tilted screen!
Ohhh I've only recently found out about the X-M1. I could definitely live without the natural viewfinder but not sure I'd be willing to give up the EVF. Is the camera really that much smaller in hand than the X-Pro1? I've not found one locally to do a size comparison and I kind of want one!

Sounds absolutely fair! Interesting you've got an X100 as well, do you use that mainly for street/travel work? Which X100 is it too as there are quite a few now!
@@FeralGinger I kept the original X100 cause it changed everything for me but today I use the X100V mainly for street but it's with me at all times :)
That's cool about keeping the original X100 - honestly feel the same way about the X-Pro1! Man, the X100V is an absolute MONSTER of a camera! Keep shooting!
I often struggle finding one’s videos that have great images that they took with this camera. I’m so glad to have found this channel. I can look at what this camera can really do rather than some ‘around the house’ type photos. No offense to them but this sensor can be pushed to great lengths and your photos show just that

Doesn’t she feel like a dense beast! One of the best made cameras I’ve ever felt to be fair, there is something wholeheartedly reassuring about the X-Pro1 body.

Great video mate! I have the XE 1 which has the same sensor as the xpro 1 but at half the cost. So for anyone who is to cheap to buy the xpro and doesn't mind the lack of the OVF: get the XE 1! It's my favourit camera ever and just perfect for everyday photography

@@FeralGinger Thank you for your response! I am currently using micro four thirds for casual shooting (family/everyday, nothing professional). Panasonic GX80 is my first "real" camera and I very much enjoy the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 zoom lens on it, in my eyes the image it produces has character. At the same time I never liked colours from the camera and always tried to do something with RAW from simple manual edits with Adobe default profile to presets like RNI Films.
Some time ago I saw jpegs from my friend's X-E2 and was amazed with how pictures look straight out of camera. I like playing with RAWs, but I'd prefer to have most of photos "as is" and only tinker with the ones I find really good (there are few of those!) So I started looking for reviews of older affordable Fuji cameras and found your amazing channel and this great video about X-pro1.

It was similar for me, once I saw the SOOC images I ended up falling in love and I definitely prefer a shorter work flow haha

My XPro1 was bought new along with the 3 original lenses, if you bought the camera and two lenses you could claim the 3rd free from Fuji. I used the camera yesterday for some street photography, just the camera and 18mm lens, a great day out. The gear goes virtually unnoticed, it’s small compact and easy to carry around, the optional grip was a worthwhile addition. Image quality is excellent A3 or A2 prints can easily be produced, I can do A3+ at home but A2 has to be printed elsewhere, I am going to add another XPro to the collection, not sure if it will be the 3 or maybe the 4 if Fuji get around to updating the 3. The XPro1 is a brilliant camera that is going nowhere, it will be staying with me for many years to come.

Cool stuff! Bought the XP1 in december 2020. had the 35/1.4 coming with the cam. Great combo. Recently picked up the 35/2 for half nothing and wow AF is fast and noiseless. Defo gave the old lady a kick up the AF butt. While the 35/1.4 is a great lens I must admitt I dig the f2 version. Smaller, faster and silent. Paired with the 1st sensor the pictures have a special look to them, less clinical and sharp, their own look really. I like it a lot.
Also 3rd party lenses with x mount are a consideration, smaller in size then the vintage glass incl adapter. Tried the 7Artisans 35/1.2 from a friend, wow what a match to the XP1, small, cool retro looking and images have an old school look to it. Very nice!

that's amazing to hear regarding the f2 version - honestly tempted to trade my 1.4 in for it if that's the case! Also been eyeing up some of the pancake lenses to make up for selling the X70!
I really dig the 7Artisans glass - I've been trying to avoid buying some for a while as I don't know how much camera gear I realistically need but that stuff seems incredible for the price!

Talking pancake, I also own the 18/2 which has a similar rendering to the 35/1.4, something special somehow hard to describe.
But loud and also slow. Well actually not as bad as people tell you on the web tbh. Plenty workable.
I only got the 35/2 b/c 1) it was 150 swiss (apx same in USD) and 2) I had the 23/2 on loan for a few weeks and was amazed how much faster it was vs the older lenses and dead silent.
Now the extra stop of light is handy to have on the 1.4 but then I am just an amateur taking pics of my family and stuff around me and I realised I very rarely use the extra stop.
I also love photography for the process rather then just the final pics. Coming from film. Still shooting my Nikon FE every now and then but film is damn expensive here and very few labs around, so need to send per mail, I miss the drop in, chat with the lab guys etc.
so I was looking for a ‚film like‘ experience with ICL in digital. Something that doesn‘t break the bank, and has a nice look and vibe.
As I got into photography again a bit more seriously a few years back and got myself a Fuji X100T new when it came out (still rocking and loving it), I wanted to stay with Fuji.
I love the rangefinderesque (is that a word? 🧐) look of the X-Pro and X100 line, so I went with an XP1. I love the feel and ergonomics of the cam. I use both cams very similar, mostly OVF and no back screen. I try to force myself to shoot like film. Not b/c I think old ways are better but I myself feel better that way, less distraction less looking at screen which I do all day long already. Of course I use the EVF as well, even the old ine on the XP1 is plenty workable. But there is something about coming home and checking the files and getting surprised at hiw sone shots came out. Of course these are just pics for myself, no paid work etc. would defo use the EVF more if I had to get it right.
As I have not much time doing post, due to kids, work and tbh lack of deeper knowledge I try to dial in the now famous fuji recipes, tweak a bit here and there and get a look I like. Another film like approach 😉, also did use the in camera raw converter, quite cool little tool if you don‘t shoot thousands of pics a day he he.
So I really like the XP1, still a great camera today. And it has ton of charme! Often less is more. Less options, buttons and features. Let‘s be honest, the average shooter doesn‘t use half the stuff.
Now, what I realised since using the XP1 and some lenses - how much I love the limitation of the X100 line. Bring everywhere, no lenses to think about, very liberating indeed. If course just an amateur would say that 🤪. The XP1 has brought back the joy to also use the X100T and to appreciate it again!

I've heard a lot of mixed feelings regardning the 18/2 but it's honestly one of the ones I want most! Just seems like one of the most useful in the entire lineup, all the images I've seen from it have been typically high quality fuji stuff too!
Seems we've a bit in common - I've a Nikon FE3 too but don't shoot it at the moment due to film costs haha
I definitely get what you mean about the rangefinder appeal and sometimes it's just nice to risk shooting with just the optical view finder and see what gems you got when you get home! Yeah, the camera definitely lends it's self to that film appeal and I found a bunch of really good film simulations for lightroom by a youtuber Lee Zavitz, one being an extremely close match for classic chrome which I LOVE, you should check them out, they only set me back a few pounds!
Funny you should say less is more, honestly, even on the X-Pro1 there are so many settings I don't use! I only ever shoot single shot, I NEVER use bracketing ect haha
I've been eyeing up the X100 series for a long time so it's cool to hear you found a place for it along side the X-Pro1/18mm combo! If it wasn't for the size of the X70 I was actually going to get an X100 a while back!

@@FeralGinger ha ha your welcome! Something I also did consider wgen getting the 35/2 was the WR in case I ever upgrade to a newer XPro. It is handy to have, not a deal breaker though. Especially here in Switzerland. Weather changes quickly. Yesterday we had 18 degrees celsius, sunny...today we woke up the freezing temperatures and snow....😳.
The 18/2 is s great one. I like that focal length a lot. Images are great. There is a lot of negative stuff in the net but tbh I think it is a great lens. I think people put too much weight on data and clinical tests rather then use it for what it is. All that pixel peeping etc...

Completely agree with you regarding the pixel peeping stuff - I'm not remotely interested in that stuff as I already use a fair amount of vintage glass that has plenty soft edges!
I can't completely appreciate the minimal approach, I quite often use the jpegs as they come due to the files often being so nice!

I picked up my X-Pro 1 w/ 35mm 1.4 lens in 2013 on sale here in Canada for $1500. It immediately replaced my Canon 5D Mk3 as my travel camera. I still have it and use it. It's been around the world pretty well and never failed. I added the X100s shortly after and the 14mm, 18mm, 27mm, and 60mm lenses. The 18mm and 60mm were cheaper back then. I did upgrade to the X-Pro 2 and recently added an X30 to the collection. The X-Pro1 doesn't travel with me anymore but I have set it up as a long-term project camera where I've set it to shoot B&W Jpegs, 1x1 format only and will work my way through the lenses, including a couple of Voigtlander M-mounts. I can't see myself ever totally retiring this camera.

@@FeralGinger Favorite place to shoot was Hong Kong. We've been there twice. But the place I've shot the most would be Puerto Vallarta. We've been there about 2 dozen times. My favorite lens is the 35mm 1.4 but the 18mm 2.0 is a very close second. The 27mm pancake was a more recent acquisition. I found the lens I used the majority of the time in Tokyo was the 18mm. The 27mm was the lens I started with for the X-Pro 1 project. The X30 will be part of the travel kit once we can start traveling again. I haven't even had it out of the house yet. Just ordered one of these. I’m still shooting film also and prefer how photos look on film vs digital. That why my Nikon D700 gets used way more than my D810 to the point where I’m probably selling the 810. I have the XT4, Xpro3 and X100v. Love them all but forcing a film look on them doesn’t quite get there. So the Xpro1 is going to be my EDC camera. Cheers.

Dude.... I got an A7r3 2 years ago, and it was my first full frame. Absolutely love it, but then around 6 months ago I found a d700 for dirt cheap and practically new. I used to have a d5000, and well I wanted a full frame nikon to shoot for fun. Well I use my D700 and carry it with me everywhere and my A7r just stays in my cabinet 🤣. I really got into it after people said it produces film like images. I barely got an F3 last year and well yup that D700 surely delivers that film like look and highly unique in its colors.

I just sold my seven year old Body on eBay for £320. I was so sorry to part with it, but I promised myself on buying my new, X-E3 in 2021! That cost me £349, as a Kit-split purchase on eBay.
The X-Trans 3 sensor is a beautiful performer and that "filmic" grain can be added to stunning effect, as I have in my custom simulation settings.
The X-E3 is an amazing pickup at any price to be fair, I think it's one of the strongest in the Fuji line! I am so happy they added the Filmic Grain feature to the range, is does do a very good job! What lens are you running on the X-E3 out of interest?
Just got a deal for an X-Pro1 with the 18-55mm f/2.8-4 for NZD $500 (about £250)! It's a really fantastic camera and the black & whites are just amazing.

Im so glad I couldnt afford a 5d mk(whatever) when I wanted one. I had to keep waiting it out and shooting film. I've told people about how badly I wanted something that translated the film shooting experience to the convenience and cost-effectiveness of digital. I learned about the x-pro 3 last year and still couldn't afford it. I save up and it seemed so far away..
I started looking at lenses and it seemed like it would be forever until I could move into the x-pro system... But then I learned about the ability to adapt Canon FD lenses and it opened up my whole world. Now I spend ~$500 dollars on a Metabones speedbooster snf not lose any part of the film experience. I can use my buttery-smooth, mint FD lenses and shoot as much as I want without worrying about processing costs. Fuji really nailed it with the x-pro line.
I was actually shooting on a 7d MKII I lent from a friend prior to getting my Fuji - Never looked back!
That's such a great story! Canon do an FD 50mmf1.4 I'm VERY fond of! Really happy it all worked out for you, I've not actually used a speedbooster but heard very good things!

I agree with you, I've had a lot of cameras, and this one is a favorite. I paid through the nose for mine, years ago, but it still works great. The only drawback is Fuji doesn't support it anymore, and no repair shop will touch them. Mine has been used so much the strap lugs are almost worn through, and I can't find anyone to replace them.
Aye, it's a shame because their long term support programs are honestly one of the biggest draws to the system but then with the X-Pro1 they've had so many revisions of the camera that it makes sense marketing wise, I just truly wished we has an in-camera Classic Chrome sim so I don't have to go through lightroom haha.
Ahh sorry to hear about the strap lug issue, you really musta used the hell out of this camera! What kind or work do you shoot with it and what glass do you generally use?

@@FeralGinger Hi, I do understand, these cameras are getting long in the tooth, and they did service them happily nearby in New Jersey until they ran out of parts. I just take snapshots for myself, and I think the wear comes from my carrying it so much. The rest of the body looks great as I usually use the half case. For Fuji lenses I only have the 27mm pancake which I love. I also use my old Rokkor lenses which are shockingly sharp. My ability to focus them is diminishing as I am at least twice your age. I may invest in the only other lens I ever really wanted, the 35mm you use.
@@jonlouis2582 Honestly, I'm kinda looking forward to that point where my X-Pro1 has the proper signs of wear and tear on it, I think they look GREAT with a bit of mojo!
I'm pretty excited for the point where I make the jump and grab either the 18mm or the 27mm for some of that pancake goodness - glad to here you're also using some other mounted glass though.
The 35mm f1.4r is truly a fantastic lens, honestly the very best I own, I will say though, if I were buying again now where I shoot purely for myself I think I'd be edging more towards the MUCH smaller 35mm f2.0, I think it complements the X-Pro form factor a little better and it's MUCH quicker to focus!
@@FeralGinger Interesting about the focusing speed. I didn’t think about that. Honestly I have never had any issue with focusing speed, but I have done all the updates over the years.
Aye, it's not been too big of an issue for me but as I used to do a LOT of pet portraiture, I honestly would take the f2 over the f1.4 if I were doing it again!

@@FeralGinger mostly I use the Fuji XF27mm, but I also own and use a lot of vintage lenses. I love Minolta and Pentax-M lenses a lot.
But my newest lenses are a 7artisans 35mmF1.2 and the TTartisan 50mmF1.2 ... bozh feel great on the X-Pro1 and also on my X-T10.

Love my XP1. The ONLY Fuji lens I have is the18-55 "kit" lens that came with my xe2, I keep telling myself to buy some Fuji glass as I do consider them to be second to none but I can't decide. Currently I use Leica M glass from my film days, the 35mm, 50mm summicrons and every now and then I put on the 50mm 1.2 Nikkor from the early 70's for some interesting looks.
I picked up my XP1 new during a flash sale on amazon for $500.00, I consider this to be one of my best purchases.

@@FeralGinger With the X-Pro1, I stick to my 16mm and 35mm 1.4s. On the X-T4, I also use a 16-55 and 50-140 2.8 for other creative and pro work. As for vintage stuff, I’ve experimented with using the couple of Canon FD lenses I have from my T70 film camera on occasion: a 50mm f1.8 and 28mm f2.8.
Man, the T70 was no slouch - VERY nice indeed, Nikon F3/Mamiya 645 user here! Nice to see another fellow film user!
That's interesting that you prioritise the primes mainly for the X-Pro1, honestly if I'm shooting paid work it's ALWAYS the 35 1.4 because I never have to worry about lighting haha.
How is the 50-140? I heard great things on release and seems to be often used for studio portrait work too but I never got the chance to play with one!
@@FeralGinger I don’t shoot the T70 often. Film is an occasional thing for me.
I tried using my primes for the work I currently do (inventory photos for a car dealership), but the 16-55 is far more suited to it. When you have several cars to shoot in a day, speed is a factor.
I have yet to use the 50-140 professionally, but it is a beauty of a lens. Not as shallow wide open as a full frame equivalent, but the image quality is definitely still there.

I have had my X Pro1 for longer than you and feel exactly the same about it. I put my pics up on the 56" TV and the quality is excellent. The best pictures I have ever taken.

@@FeralGinger I got 3 primes with it, 18mm F1.2,. 35mm F2.4 and 60mm F1.2. I also have a 16/55 F 2.8, a 55/200 and a 50/140 F 2.8 with a tely converter, all of which I bought used.

@@FeralGinger I am pretty old, been doing photography for over 50 years, and I have about 25 old Nikkors and 4 Leica M mount lenses. I did buy both a Nikon F to Fujifilm and a Leica M to Fujifilm adaptors. I did play with pretty much all my prime Nikkors, but the crop sensor conversion makes my "understanding" of the focal lengths a bit distorted. Also, I have 9 Fujifilm lenses. Covering my most used optics, so the redundancy and ease of autofocus with my aging eyes makes the lens on my camera most likely a Fujifilm model.
I do use two lenses adapted often. A Nikon mount Voightlander 58mm f/1.4 on my X-T2 giving a beautiful 85mm-ish rendering with great background blur. I also use a 90mm Leica lens with adapter, also on X-T2 giving a 135mm-ish lenses with good optical quality.
I use the Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 lens most often, wide open 80% of the time. It has the best of everything to me... angle of view, rendering, subject isolation, etc.
@@albertsmith9315 Wow, that's quite the collection, sounds like some interesting choices too, I'd love to get my hands on some voightlander and Leica glass, given your comment regarding the 35mm (I agree by the way, a truly stunning lens) do you think the price for Leica mounted on Fuji is really worth it? This isn't me bad talking Leica at all, I know a few Fuji users that actually use Leica glass, I've just never been blessed with the opportunity, I just think the costs are borderline questionable sometimes haha.
@@FeralGinger I started using Leica M film cameras in the '80s starting as many did with used models. I finally bought a new M6 and three contemporary lenses. They were expensive, but nothing like today.
The limitation is that since they are focused by a rangefinder, they can't focus close. When I mounted the 35mm and 50mm Summicrons to my Fujifilm camera, everything was good, except that I was often frustrated by the inability to move in close (compared to same focal length Fujifilm glass), so for me it's not worth it. The 90mm is a genuine long lens on the Fuji, so the close up limitation is not such a big deal, and I don't have the 90mm Fujifilm lens, so it works for me.
Leica glass is really off the charts these days. My 35mm Summicron cost 1200 US Dollars in the mid-80s, about twice what I paid for my 35mm f/1.4 Nikkor for my F3 in the same decade.
Leica just released the newest 35mm Summicron and it cost 8000-plus US Dollars!!! How good can it be?
8000 Dollars can buy you an X-T4, 16mm f/1.4, 35mm f/1.4 and 56mm f/1.2.... and a trip to a foreign land to actually use that gear.

It's really interesting to hear such a strong view on Leica here - I'd really like to try one of the Summicrons as the quality looks pretty amazing but I honestly don't know if I ever will. I'm currently trying to convince myself that the Hasselblad X-Pan is worth the cost and one of those paired with a 45mm is still much less than most Leica glass haha

I have an X100f, but I haven't picked it up in over a year. Instead I use my XE2 with the same sensor. I agree about the image quality. I've checked on it, and I can sell the X100f, but the Xpro1 and have money left to buy a lens. It is really getting tempting.
Thanks for dropping by! GOnna be honest, I'm quite jealous of the X100f! haha Always wanted an X100, the closest I ever got was the X70. And the newer X100s are getting a bit silly in price in my opinion, I think the X100f was the sweet spot! If you are going to buy an X-Pro1 I'd recommend doing it sooner as the value is likely to keep climbing for now. That said, with your set up I'd keep the X100f - perfect travel/documentary camera IMO, and replace the XE-2 with the X-Pro1 even thought the XE-2 is arguably a better camera in many ways! THat was the only downside of selling my X70, I now have a lack of a pocketable camera!
I have the X-Pro1 and Canon EOS 5D Classic, plus a large collection of film cameras and lenses. I've used my X-Pro1 more than any other camera and I hope to have many more years of service from it.

Hi, I have an X-Pro1, X-Pro2, XH-1, X-T3, I had been a Micro Four Thirds fan boy for the best part of the last fifteen years and had used Olympus and Panasonic. Eventually I got tired of trying to work out why images straight out of camera were never quite what I thought they should be and decided to look for something better. I opted for Fujifilm because of what I read and heard about the image quality. I bought an ex demo X-H1, then an nearly new X-T3 because I wanted something lighter than the X-H1. I bought a second hand X-Pro1 just to find out if all the hype was justified with the intention of selling it on if I didn't like it. So first the Cons. The EVF is the worst of any camera I have owned. If you have less than perfect vision you will need to fit a Dioptre adapter lens even then the EVF is next to useless in bright sunlight, it is only good for low light and indoors. The OVF is far better in almost all conditions. Even the LCD screen performs better than the EVF. The camera can freeze. It has only happened once, but the fact is it can happen.
The Pros. It is lighter than my other cameras so it is easier to carry. It is compatable with all my lenses. Fujifilm still provide updates for it. Image quality and colour accuracy are better than any of the Panasonic or Olympus cameras I have owned. Finally if you shoot Black and White the X-Pro1 does produce images that are a bit special.

I completely agree with you on the EVF but the OVF feature is such a special thing to have. Glad to hear you've found joy with the Fuji cameras and being able to get straight out of camera results this nice certainly saves us a lot of time in post haha.
I VERY nearly went down' the Olympus route prior to joining Fuji so it was interesting to hear you do that route first!

Really appreciate your reply. In retrospect I may have been overly critical of the X-PRO 1. But I had seen so many reviews where reviewers raved about the camera but made no mention of the flaws and especially as some were punting the camera as ideal for beginners. The analogue controls might seem intimidating at first but they do make you think about what you know about photography and what you need to know and like you say they make photography fun again. It is lighter than my other Fujifilm cameras and that is a definite plus point for street photography. But like I said there are issues with the EVF if you wear glasses, and while you can still pick up a body for £200-£300 you have to factor in the cost of a lens or lenses. Even a basic lens like a XC 15-45mm is going too cost £50-£100+ depending on whether you buy new or used. That may be a deal breaker for someone on a tight budget.

Ahh the X-E1 is incredible! Slightly smaller, built in flash, same sensor and if I recall no ofv but a slightly better EVF? you'll get some incredible images out of it!

Hi if you want to try wide angle the Fuji 16mm-2.8 focuses nice and fast on the xpro 1, all the fujicron lenses keep the xpro 1 useable and are well worth buying for the extra fast focusing speed, try them and see for yourself.

@@T-Prime848 Honestly, the 7Artisans stuff is great from everything I've seen of it, It was actually the 25mm I'm drawn to in their line too because it's such a light/compact design, I feel like it would just be the perfect fit for the X-Pro1/XE line!
I agree with you though, Fuji glass is pretty expensive but at least when you get it, you know that it's going to be really high quality! My Fuji 35mm f1.4 is one of the best lenses I've ever used and when I got that it was the only lens I had for a long while - no regrets, it still sees regular use all these years later, however, if doing it again I'd probably go for the 35mm f2 for the faster focus and the smaller sizing :)
Beautiful photos in your video. Out of curiosity, I just had a look on eBay: the cheapest body-only is $Aus600-$1000 without a lens, going up through $1600 with a lens (usually the 35mm f1.4), to one with 2 lenses for $2000 (with 35mm 1.4 & 18mm). That’s insane for a 2012 digital camera. Fascinating that it holds it’s value so much. As much as it is a nice-to-have, I don’t shoot much street, and my X-T3 and even my old X-T20 do just fine in that department. They have electronic shutter for silent shooting too, which I don’t believe the original X-Pro1 had. I was just editing some B&W shots from my X-T3 today shot at around iso1600 (developed in Capture One), the grain felt so natural and film-like, versus how my old Canon 80D produced grain. Shooting in ACROS, I can get away with shooting at iso10,000, and often it still looks really nice, as the grain looks nice while retaining a lot of detail. It depends on the shot though.
Right? The prices are going mental. I agree with you though, I've an X-S10 and it buries my X-Pro1 in almost every department except feel and "natural looking grain". You're right, no silent shutter on the X-Pro1 and yeah, Acros is easily one of the best film sims out there!

@@FeralGinger I came from using Apple's Aperture, I'd tried Lightroom but never liked it much partly due to the way I worked, adding metadata to a pic as I went and then edit, with Auto providing a good start to the actual edit. Lightroom's Auto wasn't any good for my images, and it's metadata editor was terrible and everything was separated in modules. So, when it came time to switch, I saw other Aperture users switching to this app called Capture One, and trying it, it was a natural transition from Aperture. Back then I shot Canon, so it wasn't about rendering X-trans files. I know some people who come from Lightroom find the transition more jarring, and indeed there's a Lightroom layout included by default. People like having things laid out the way they are used to I guess. I naturally liked the tabbed tool palettes on the left, because Aperture did that, and the tools like the Curves or Highlight/Shadows tools was familiar.
I haven't used Lightroom in a few years, so hard for me to be unbiased. Both would have their strengths and weaknesses. I know Lightroom users have complained about the speed or lagginess rendering or refreshing, one area I never had any issue with on my 2013 iMac with Capture One. C1 has evolved a lot over the years, having come from the other direction to Lightroom and Aperture, which both started at the same time for hobby and pro 35mm photographers frustrated with the increasing complexity and bloat of Photoshop, and need for proper batch editing of entire photoshoots. Capture One however came from a need to service Phase One'e high-end medium format cameras and their huge files for studio work, a reason it is still today the default for tethered shooting, even for people normally using Lightroom. It was originally sessions-based without a database, Catalogs was a later addition. Like Lightroom and Aperture, it uses SQLite.
One of the advantages of Capture One for me is it's layers and masks (not available in their free Fuji and Sony version), ideal for applying any adjustments I want exactly where I want them, and the strength of a layer can be reduced with a slider. Ironically just like Photoshop. I haven't even bothered comparing output of Fuji files myself, others have done that and commented on the softness and 'worminess' of Lightroom's demosaicing of X-Trans files. Basically I just like what it gives me without a lot of effort, unless I want to get into layered adjustments where I can isolate a subject, apply any adjustment like colour temperature or colour grading generally, preset styles only applied to a masked layer, etc. The colour tools is another killer feature for me; Lightroom recently copied some of it somewhat, but not yet as comprehensively from what I can tell. It is just so much easier colour grading or devising a colour look.
One thing I don't use it for is metadata, it's recently had an overhaul of it's import, but I prefer using Photo Mechanic for a number of reasons to import and tag with templates. C1 can do some of that now, but not as comprehensively as Photo Mechanic, and due to the way I had to move from Aperture, I prefer my metadata not in a database, but embedded in the file, which is an option in PM. Many people don't want anything altering their RAWs, but having worked with both PM and Exiftool for years and having tagged tens of thousands of files, I've never had an issue with them, and once tagged, Finder on Mac indexes them and can find them.
Like anything, you have to be used to a particular piece of soiftware and it's quirks, and evaluate if the benefits are worth the trouble of learning as well as financial cost, and for many they feel tied to the Lightroom catalog for legacy. Even though you can import a Lightroom catalog, they are different RAW engines with slightly different tools. I've preferred to simply re-edit rather than rely on an automatic translation of the settings.

Thanks for sharing wonderful images from a true legend of a camera. I initially recommended this camera to my wife when it first came out (she was still shooting film back then). Auto focus was too slow for my use, which is ironic as I now mostly use manual focus anyways, but I digress.
So a while back I got myself the X100V, thinking it would be a fun little camera for certain situation. Alas, I sent it back. Colors were nothing like the ones I remembered from the X-trans 1 sensor (and white balance was weird... sometimes). A recommendation? Try finding the external hand grip. It changes everything. Jan.

XE-1 has the same sensor as the X-Pro1 ,but no ovf and is slightly smaller ,but also a great camera for use with small vintage lenses .

The parrot portrait is incredible at ISO 4000! i have an Xpro1 but cant quite get the simulation i want (everything edges green, regarldless of tinkering the WB!) - you've made me want to pick it up again! great video!

Best camera I’ve ever used. It’s everything you said it is and more. Just how many megapixels do you realistically need? Image quality is superb, and form factor is spot on. Mine is totally battered to death and still going strong. Have a look at the 7Artisans primes. Very good value for money and they give you a vintage lens feel but on an x mount.
Exactly! I hate the megapixel race, I've printed HUGE images from the X-Pro1 and they've turned out fantastic!
Regarding the battered to death look, the X-Pro1 actually looks AMAZING when it's got some wear and tear on it! Really good to hear about the 7Artisans, I'm definitely going to be checking them out after this!
Is the X-Pro1 your only Fuji? What glass have you paired it with?
@@FeralGinger I have an X-T1 which I got to test that body style, and I really like it. Very similar in form to the Sony A7. I am going to upgrade it to the X-T2 for the added advantage of the dual card slots and extra resolution. There's very little difference between that and the X-T3 TBH so doesn't warrant the extra price difference. I use the X-Pro1 pretty much all the time and have the 35mm f2, which I really enjoy using especially with the OVF. The 7Artisans are very good. The 35mm f0.95 is a fantastic lens. Optically the same as the Mitakon, but much cheaper. The focusing isn't quite as assured on that lens as it is on the 50mm f1.1 I also use, which is adapted m-mount. But both deliver superb results for little money. I did initially get the Bayes Kipon speedbooster for OM lenses, particularly for my 50mm f1.4, which is optically amazing. The booster is really nice quality, but renders the edges soft and fuzzy. Completely unusable for wide angle lenses. But yeah, the X-Pro1 completely changed how I work as a photographer and I love the camera.
@@derrenleepoole I really like the XT line but I've never actually had chance to try them! For me the XS-10 was the best go between as I do quite a bit of video work at the moment but it definitely feels weird not having the analogue controls! Interesting that you mainly use the OVF! I usually use it during street work if I want to come home to a surprise selection of images - I don't revisit the images when shooting them so shooting through the OVF gives it a film camera like workflow haha

It's got a modern sensor... Cameras made between 2012 and 2014 are still comparable to cameras today. Changes since have been very incremental.

@@FeralGinger Thanks man! I like pictures better with 35 1.4 and its not so inspiring and fun like this one. I thought about legendary helios 58 f2 or takamur asuka 50 1.4 or 1.8 also legenday but maybe later on. Fancy 56 1.2 a little bit too, maybe one day. For now will stick with 2 lenses.
Ahh I also quite fancy the 56 f1.2 haha, can put a thumbs up for Takumar too, I've the 55mm f2 and it's definitely got one of the most unique characteristics out of all my glass!
the fuji x-pro1 was the first camera I ever bought. Sadly I had to sell it for a camera with a higher burst rate because of some of the work I was shooting back half a year ago. However, I just put the a6000 I changed to for out for sale just to get another x-pro1 as I miss it too much.

They all sound like amazing choices though, I'd be hesitant with a 55mm as the ONLY glass though as the crop factor means you'd be quite restricted on what you can shoot - even if every shot from it looks amazing! The XC35mmF2 looks incredible tbh, I was really happy with just my 35mm but I do quite like the 15-45, again, it doesn't really give you a great depth of field but it is a LOT more versatile, especially if you're doing any video work - this was shot on the 15-45mm!

I definitely know what you're talking about, my old super Takaumar glass had the same properties you talk about. To be honest, I quite like it in certain situations, it's why I'm still obsessed with the original Fuji 35mm f1.4 - it has character. if I wanted a BETTER lens overall I'd have the much cheaper, smaller, faster and weather resistant f2 version. I think a LOT of focus is put on making all glass the same nowadays and almost nullifies the reason to use a different lens if that becomes to goal? does that make sense?

That's VERY kind of you to say. Honestly, it's the glass doing the heavy lifting. I shoot almost exclusively on my 35mm f1.4 and I try and never shoot below 1/250th sec! Hope this helps! What glass are you currently using?
Oh, I forgot, I also run the noise reduction at -2 so I can deal with it in post, you get a MUCH cleaner image!

@@FeralGinger I was skeptical at first. I have one too - I also have the X-T2 and the files that come from both of them are phenomenal! I do that a certain love for the x-pro1 and x-pro2 - just because of the optical and evf. You can these of all worlds. Fuji is just a good solid camera.

As you like portraits you really should try the viltrox 85mm 1.8 v2 for Fuji for less than £300 it’s an amazing lens.

@@FeralGinger yes i have the xpro 1, xpro 2 and xs10, the viltrox works great on all three and viltrox regular updates there firmware via a USB port on the lens update is easy to do it’s just drag and drop so there seriously looking after there customers just like FUJIFILM and I have the FUJIFILM 35-1.4 which I will never part with as its magic with the xpro 1 more organic film like and less digital, which explains the cult following so don’t part with the xpro 1 and 35-1.4 .

Interesting that you own the X-Pro2 AND the X-S10. I'm curious, what made you buy the X-S10? I've got it too and I love it, the image quality is top notch and I can easily use it for professional work flows and it now does all my video work, it just doesn't have that joyous Fuji analogue feel to it, how are you finding it given your previous experience?
@@FeralGinger hi have you tried your 35-1.4 on xs10 if not try it, that lens is nice and fast on the xs10 and I just love the acros with the green filter H-2 and S+4 and the biggest advantage of the xs10 is the IBIS fantastic with the heavier lenses like the viltrox 85-1.8 v2 excellent for camera shake. The Fuji 27mm pancake lens goes nice with all Fuji cameras including the xpro 1 and if you try the Fuji f2 lenses on the xpro 1 they give that old lady a new lease of life and if you like wide angle try the very small and lightweight Fuji 14-2.8 or the Fuji 10-24 f4 both great lenses.

I don't do much wide angle work to be fair! I was actually quite surprised that the kit lens with my X-S10 was as wide as it is - 15-45mm, not a perfect lens but enough for me to have a play with haha, thanks again!

Regarding the other settings I always shoot in Fine+Raw, WB auto, Colour/Sharpness/HL Tone/Shadow Tone are all at 0 and Noise reduction is at -2, I've found this help keeps the images a LOT more crisp.

@@FeralGinger thanks for the reply, Feral. I spent a day shooting my 2 kids (under 4) and 2 dogs with the 35 1.4 and I was slightly discouraged that it wasn't fast enough. Probably 1/3 of the shots were out of focused and I will disclose that I am very much an amateur experimenting with family portraiture and street photography. I love using the OVF and I shoot in manual, but it doesn't seem to get the shots that I want. It also doesn't help that I shoot in silent mode so it's hard to tell if the lens has focused either, haha. The other day, however, I paired it with a 23 f2 and I had more consistent shots, a lot more in focus and it captured a lot more of the environment which gave it more context I suppose. Any tips would help, haha. Thanks again!

Thank you for the kind comment and dropping by! It's a post processing look I particularly enjoy, I print a on matt crystal achieve paper and find that it makes the prints pop so much more (again, for my own personal tastes!) Are you a Fuji user yourself?
@@FeralGinger thanks for the tip on matt crystal I will have a go. I am currently working through a permajet sample pack. I am an X-Pro3 user but also shoot film (big fan of Provia 100F). Producing that film look on digital fascinates me and film sims even more so because I want to pre-visualise my intended photo at the point of capture. The X-Pro3 chrome effects are very nice indeed and really hard to recreate in post processing.
What glass do you tend to pair with the X-Pro3? And as a film user I imagine you've possibly had the chance to try some manual lenses on it?

Hi, I am virtually on the edge of buying this camera but I hear very mixed things about manually focusing with the white peak focus system and I plan on primarily using vintage & leica lenses... What do you think? Is it really that difficult?
I managed pretty well with it for the manual focusing, the white wasn't TOO bad but yeah the more modern Fuji's having colour peaking definitely helps!
I wouldn't hesitate to do it but I would see if anyone has one locally you can try first!

Instead of an X-Pro1, I found a nice X-E1 for much less ... same sensor/electronics as X-Pro1, with a better EVF. Amazing monochromes from the X-E1 (without Acros film sim!). Reminds me of Tri-X days...

Thank you for the very well done video. Yes, I'll take you up on your invitation to ask a question. I am a fine artist (not commercial or production work) so, a smaller budget. When I saw the X-pro3 I was blown away by the design -- had wanted for years to switch from SLR to rangefinder (though not sure exactly why) and always covetted a Contax G2, for example. The XPro 3 is just out of my range, especially as I'll need to add the gear as I switch from a Nikon D200 (!!!). So thinking perhaps go with a used X-pro-1 or x-pro2 so I can by a lens (or two), and upgrade the body later. Still I'd like to get five years out of the body, and use it as my only camera (unless I hit the lottery). Shoot landscapes, portraits, street. Your thoughts, recommendations? Oh, and also concerned about the auto focus on the x-pro1, as I do photo shoots with moving subjects. Thanks.

I completely agree regarding the design of the X-Pro line. It is visually very special and during photoshoots I've often found it can help clients open up as they're so interested in the "unusual looking film camera".
Honestly, you actually have quite a few more reasons to go for the X-Pro2 if it's within reach financially. Whilst the X-Pro1 still has that amazing organic/grainy sensor, the images from X-Pro2 are incredible, and MUCH bigger so they provide a lot more space for cropping - great for street work.
However, the real selling point for me is the focus system and selector, using the joystick focus selector is honestly SO much better (I have a joystick on my X-S10). Also the focussing speed on the X-Pro2 is miles ahead of the X-Pro1 and for street photography that can make a real difference in capturing certain moments.
Another plus for the X-Pro2 is the additional electronic shutter, at first glance it's something easy to look past, until you're wanting to shoot open wide on a sunny day! the X-Pro1 maxes out at 1/4000sec Mechanical MAX, the Xpro-2 is 1/8000 Mechanical and 1/32000 Electronic!
The X-Pro2 also has Acros and Classic Chrome film simulations - two of the very best EVER produced!
I also LOVE how the X-Pro2 has the ISO dial built into the shutter dial - the X-Pro1 doesn't have that, just a Fn button to access the iso menu.
Honestly, I straight up LOVE the X-Pro1, but if I was buying a camera now to last me for a long time, there would be no contest! You can also do professional shoots comfortably with the X-Pro2 because of it's much more reliable focusing, I wouldn't really recommend the X-Pro1 for professional work - it can do it, I've done it plenty, but you have to be extremely prepared to work with it's flaws!
Also have you seen the graphite colourway on the X-Pro2? Ohhhh that's tasty haha
A great shout out for the G2 by the way, for me the dream camera is the Hasselblad X-Pan/Fuji TX-1!

Honestly, the X-Pro2 vs X-Pro3 is a much less interesting debate, the Sensor difference is negligent, the focusing difference is borderline irrelevant, the main advantages of the X-Pro3 are the MUCH MUCH better video modes, but a MASSIVE negative for me is the rear screen on the X-Pro3 is a flip DOWN to use screen. If I didn't want the screen there I'd just turn it off, but to actually have to flip it down to use it in those situations where you want to take waist shots or low profile shots just seems stupid. I would 110% go for the X-Pro2 and put the money towards an additional lens! I wouldn't bother waiting for an X-POro4 when the X-Pro2 covers almost anything you'd ever need in my honest opinion!

I think, the quality of the x-trans3 sensor(X-pro2/Xt2/XH1) is better than the newer on.
Haha a true fuji lover here then, a great collection you have too! The XH-1 is INCREDIBLE and I remember being so desperate for the XT-1 when it firest released - not sure how I managed to hold off haha. Interesting regarding the comment on the X-Trans3 sensor - I've not had the chance to actually compare the third gen with my X-S10 but I would love to look more into the differences!

other glas... yes.. the 56/1.2R, a old Zeiss/Contax 50/1.4 and the 18-55.
On list, the 23/1.4, 90/2.0 and the 14/2.8 or 10-24🤔.
Street/art: Xpro/Xt with 18+35
Wedding: 2 XH with 23+56 90%
Vacation: X-pro35+Xt 18/55for me and my wife
But the number of glases or cameras is not the point... it's your eye☝️... you doesent need a lot of gear for good pictures🤷♂️ you're the best example👍

I use X-Pro 1 as an compact camera with a 18-55 mm Zoom lens. It replaced a Panasonoic LX3 and LX5. I hate to use the X-T1.

I got the X-T1 and put a 55-200mm on it to evaluate if I shall get a prime 400mmF2.8 or a tele zoom to my Nikon D700/D800E and in the future a D850. The X-T1 is not easy to use during winter due to small buttons

@@thomaseriksson6256 honestly if size if an issue DO look at the Sigma 18-50 f2.8, cheap, GREAT image quality and if you take the lens hood off it is pretty damn small - smaller than anything else comparatively but you do lose the aperture ring. Other than that I'd probably just go for the newer 23mm f2, that thing is great and SUPER small.

@@FeralGinger Yes, XPRO1, XE1 but also Nikon D610 and Canon 5D mk 1. But the X-Pro1 is my personal camera at the moment. Using the 14mm 2.8 fuji, standard fuji zoom and playing with the Nikon AIS lenses with an adapter.

@@FeralGinger My father had the XE1 with the fuji lenses so I did not choose them. The 14 is nice, but of course very difficult for some shots with an effective 20mm field of view equiv. 40mm is my field of view of choice. That is what I have on the 5D.
As for adapted on the Xpro1 this is not easy. The EVF is not as detailed as the XE1 and the lack of diopter adjustment gives me a problem.
Ahh, fair enough! Can definitely see where the XE1 has some advantages, it's a great camera tbh and yeah, the X-Pro1s EVF is slightly lacking nowadays! Thanks :)

I have the X-M1 (for a mere 85$) and loved the jpegs im getting out of it so much so that i sold off my X-T3. Only thing missing is the additional PRO Neg and Monochrome + Filter FS. Is it worth to spring for the X-PRO1 just for these FS? Planning to keep them both since I got the XM1 for quite cheap.

Honestly, it's absolutely not worth it as your XM-1 already does almost everything you need and you can get some really good presets that mimic the X-Pro1 :)

@@FeralGinger whoops too late! Already bought a used xpro1 for 250$ hahah. Seriously loving the way it handles and for once I can now peer into an EVF , still getting used to with the OVF though (im not too sure i understand how to set the parallax correction). Interesting, do you have links to the said preset? Anyway, reason why I sold off the XT3 is because ive been relying on it too much (AF speed and performance in general) that i didnt stop and think about my composition etc. Limiting myself to the xpro1 for example, made me think about my composition and placing the AF point to where i want my subject to be. Plus, xtrans1 jpegs are awesome..did a paid gig on my XM1 on Provia and really gives a good starting point for my edits.
Ymmv though, I'd imagine a fulltime professional would rather spring for the XT3. Otoh im just a "passionate hobbyist" 🤣
can you use it as professional camera for let say wedding and commercial ?
I used it for plenty of commercial work but didn't risk it for weddings as sometimes you DO need decent face/eye detection but realistically you COULD if you were willing to shooting slower!
