This really helped me because all my teacher does is put videos and doesnt even teach. Then she gets mad at us if we don't know the answer. I get some people learn better that way but I need someone to take it slow and explain just a bit. You really helped me and she has never showed us that method so im relived because we have a major test tomorrow. :)

I'm going back to college after a 10 year hiatus so I am faced with the COMPASS test. FOIL is easy enough but the drudgery of factoring was a dark cloud on the horizon. Thank you for keeping me dry on the rainy days ahead.

Genius... It seems like most professors just want to confuse the heck out of their students. I guess it makes them feel smarter.
You, my friend, are not like most professors.

Wow, you really have a lot of things to say don't you.
Honestly since my comments were not directed towards you and merely just feedback for the producer of this video you should just refrain from touching the keyboard when pertaining the intention to digitally communicate to me because of the fact your responses simply mean absolutely nothing to me. (just some advice) if you continue I will not respond because obviously your not getting the point Smith.

im sorry if you got the impression i'm trying acting tough, I was actually just expressing my current state of emotion towards this poorly constructed example of how to use mathematical systems.
also so what if I made a once in a while grammatical error. Leave my comments alone there not directed or intended for you to respond to.

Because there is no way to find two numbers that add up to 12 and multiply to 105, simultaneously!
    Or more generally:
To be factorizable the polynomial must have roots or become equal to zero at some point.
    The Factor Theorem.
    x − r is a factor of a polynomial P(x) if and only if r is a root of P(x).

  • @BennjaaCannadaa
    @BennjaaCannadaa 11 років тому

Instead of the box method you could simply divide the two numbers you get when using the umbrella method by the coefficient. You then take the denominator of each and put it in front of the variable when you write the final answer. Example: if you have 3 and six, you divide by the coefficient 2. You get 3/2 and 3. So the final answer would be (2x +3)(x +3)

This is the coolest way to factor ever. My teacher explained it to us in some super boring way, and then i was just like "BAM. check out this umbrella method i got off of youtube" and now half of the class uses it. Thanks for the help!

  • @CookiesAndCreamholic

This is so much help to students who find it hard to understand factoring. But at 6:10, you should have said "6 divided by 3 equals 2 and -21 divided by 3 equals -7 and also the other column"... Anyway, I find your method useful. Great vid!

So in the box, I have the same problem, but instead of 2x^2+9x+9, I have 2x^2+9x+10.
Instead of a 6 on the btoom left of the box, it's a 5. How does 2 go into 5?

Let me first start by saying I'm a grown man who was driven to the point of violence because i've been struggling with this very topic since HS, this has attributed to me failing numerous math classes and being stuck in community college forever. SIR you are in every sense a true teacher , you took a subject i dreaded hated and made it so simple. This method is perfect for you if your learned how to foil with the box method like I did

  • @tommydeluca2120

Guess and check is sooo much more faster and efficient. I used to do the x^2 + mx + px + mp method (breaking up middle term and grouping) but guess and check is a LOT easier and much better when you get to trig.
