Image being a simple Japanese fisherman, you get captured by foreign soldiers and sent across the sea to the most powerful man in the world at the time, but to your surprise you get treated like an honored guest for 2 months and sent back home..
Indeed. Their culture seems so mysterious and alluring. I understand they were considered Pagan and, depending on the tribe, were nomadic or had large cities.
It’s funny to me how far back and how widespread the myth of Japan being this mysterious magical land filled with riches is. Probably only originated because of how isolationist Japan has been throughout history, which made it always seem like this untouchable mythical land.
Korea has a long history of being the reluctant underling. Under Yuan dynasty as Goryo. Under Qing/Ming dynasty as Joseon. Their crown prince had to be sent over to Qing/Ming dynasty in a kind of exchange program to make sure the next king would be friendly to the regime in exchange for sovereignty.
@@d4dr4g0n Nah that happens only in Qing dynasty period not Ming. Koreans have sent their princes to Mongolian's or Manchurian's territory as a hostage mainly because they lost war to them, but there's no point to send their princes to Chinese territory when they didn't lose to battles with Chinese
To be clear, it's only between Koryo and Yuan in the 13th to mid 14th century, and much later between Joseon and Qing in the mid 17th to 19th century that there was this sort of practice of sending a prince or any male and/or female royal member to the Chinese state or in the case of Koryo and Yuan, even the crown prince was sent because Koryo was a semi-autonomous vassal state of Mongol Yuan so the important crown prince was sent as a temporary hostage. With Qing and Joseon, except for the very beginning of their relationship when Joseon lost the brief war with Qing (1636-1637) and officially surrendered and was forced to plead allegiance to Jurchen Qing (and therefore abandon relationship with Ming), just regular princes or less important royal members were sent to Qing, not crown princes because it was a tributary relationship, albeit with more political pressure from the hegemon than was with native Chinese states like with Ming previously. So yes, I would avoid saying this thing was a big part of Korean history, as it was only a couple of instances in Korean history that this royal member hostage practice existed. This practice only happens in vassal or especially unequal tributary relationships, which for Korea was the Mongol Yuan and then the Jurchen Qing, respectively. And only with the relationship with Yuan did Korea have to send crown princes or any important high ranking royal family members since the relationship was a vassal, meaning Yuan had significant authority over Korea as opposed to a tributary relationship, which was just a regular relationship with a Chinese state in the East Asian world with a Chinese state being the de jure superior authority but not neccesarily having significant de facto power and authority over the other state(s) (for most of the time).
Wait could the Japanese back then speak Mongolian or did the Mongolians send the letter in Japanese? I was imagining the Japanese got the letter and where just like “Ayo, wtf is this.”
Some interesting curiosities about the complicated relationship between Yuan and Koryo: the Mongols had to invade Korea seven times before Koryo accepted defeat; at the end, the Mongols were so done of the Korean resistance that Koryo managed to keep its King and an authonomous administration. During the Yuan Dynasty, the King of Koryo sat together with the Mongolian èlites next to the Khan (the only foreigner who had such privilege) because the Koreans sent many young women to China to become concubines and wives of the Mongolian nobility; in fact, the Mongols considered Korean women to be particularly attractive.
@@idraote Yes, the Korean nobility obviously wanted to maintain the power and a certain autonomy, but we have to understand that Koryo was forced to send thousands of women to China, a true mass deportation. Koryo also had to send heavy tributes and the Korean King had to marry a Mongolian wife who monitored the loyalty of the crown to Yuan Empire. Moreover, the most important wife for a Mongolian aristocrat normally was a Mongolian wife (the Mongols were polygamous, while the Koreans were proudly monogamous), but there is a very interesting exception: Toghon Temur, the last Khan of the Yuan Dynasty, chose a Korean wife as Empress and she became so important that her power actually exceeded that of her husband. Unfortunately for her, the Dynasty collapsed when her influence over the Empire was at its peak. Today she is known as Empress Gi
