- Derby County: Bye Bye Baseball Ground - Take a trip down memory lane with Derby historian Richard Felix
The ground was part of Derby County's history for well over 100 years. The Rams first started playing league matches on a regular basis on the ground in 1895 Derby played its last match at the Baseball Ground on the Saturday 11th of May 1997 in a 1-3 defeat against Arsenal. Baseball ground continued to be used for reserve team games until 2003. Baseball ground was finally demolished and replaced by housing
My name is Ian Williams I played here for derby under Arthur cox and Roy McFarland in the late 80s .
Hi Ian you played st a time when football was all about football. I doubt modern players would last long against players from your era and before. All the best to Ian and takecare 👍
Such a shame that nearly all these type of grounds have gone to be replaced by horrible soulless identikit stadiums with no atmosphere. I’m a Manchester United fan and I only went there once in 88/89 I think we got a 2-2 draw. I remember mcclair scoring for us. Great atmosphere there.
I'VE been to OT once in the mid to late 90s, as an away fan. It felt really strange, like I was watching a game in a posh hotel. Odd atmosphere...
I saw better games at Gigg Lane Bury, with the United reserves!
Been to the baseball ground great atmosphere, with bwfc, and manager at the time rioch, the old grounds were the best,
I couldn't agree withbyou more mate 👍 its sad I love pride Park I do but its got f all on older grounds.
really miss the old quirky stadiums like this so much character and history.Much better atmosphere than the newer stadiums of today .
Your absolutely right my friend sad their gradually being demolished. The newer pride Park for instance is fantastic but doesn't hold a candle to the bbg
so sad that this famous ground is no more. So many great players performed here
I've got some good old memories of this place my dad used to take me as a young lad, Normanton upper tier 😊😊 gone never forgotten x
Watching this and another video with the demolition footage makes me kinda emotional and the nostalgia is kicking in and I'm not even a Derby fan!
It's just all the stadiums back then had a unique identity, inside the city, in residential areas. Which is in complete contrast to the new ones that all look alike and are on the outskirts.
Always had a soft spot for Derby County. Respect from a Liverpool fan, the reigning Champions of Europe.
Same here my friend i got tears in my eyes and you know that feeling you get when your heart drops into your stomach i get that. Even riding through the old site now houses i remember the good days.
Thank you for this video - brilliant to see the Baseball ground, warts and all. I loved the old stadiums, and have fond memories of visiting these lovely characterful old grounds as an away supporter like the Baseball Ground, Maine Road, Burnden Park, The Den, Filbert Street, Highfield Road, and my beloved home ground of Highbury. Sadly I never managed to get to Ayresome Park and Roker Park. Football was great in those days standing on the terraces, happy footie memories - thank you again :-)
You're absolutely spot on my friend 👏
I'm really glad I got to see a match at The Baseball Ground, it was such a unique stadium. Some of the fan chants were very humourous too. With the crowd so close to the pitch the atmosphere was electric. Modern stadiums are boring in comparison.
This was a proper football ground
"All the famous managers sat here," you didn't mention Dave Mackay!
Boy hood playground for all the kids growing up around pear tree. Glory days of Derby County great atmosphere, them European cup games fantastic ! great memories .
I'll never forget 1996 promotion against crystal palace. I was 11 years old when we beat them 2-1 and made it to the premiership with jim smith. The atmosphere that day was no doubt the best ever I have seen at a game. After the final whistle I ran on to the pitch and took a piece of turf home with me and planted it in my garden. That was the best time of my life to be a derby fan. I feel so fortunate to have been able to watch such a great Derby team. It makes me sad that they knocked the ground down and the only thing we have to remember the baseball ground is a shitty uninspiring sculpture surrounded by a housing development. Parts of the stands should of been saved and turned into a memorial or a museum. It was one of the founding members of the football league and the history this place had was immense.
Thanks for posting this, an abridged version of the original video which began with Richard Felix explaining the origins of DCFC and its move to the BBG in 1895, and ending with a pictorial history of the ground's development and an anecdote from a long-term supporter, aka Flash. Unique and precious despite the shortcomings in picture quality.
"So Derbyshire County Cricket Club's football club, which played matches on a racecourse, moved to play football on a baseball ground."
@@ilokivi Can't believe that nobody else has given this comment the thumbs up!
Where is the og….is it still on here
a massive part of Derby history, shame they knocked it down.. my dad grew up at the bottom of Harrington Street as well as Leacroft Road 70 odd years ago
I had an old auntie who lived on Northumberland terrace in Derby Town centre.
BOTH of them long gone now; one dead & the other demolished!
Fascinating video. I'm a United fan and this brings back lots of great memories. As a 17 year old, I was at the Baseball Ground in August, '89 to watch United get beat by Derby 2-0. The turnstiles for the away end were so small and tight; the kickoff was delayed because of United fans being in the home sections and the aggro between both sets of supporters before the match was brilliant. Sorry we lost that day, but thoroughly enjoyed my trip down to a truly historic ground.
Rotherham?
Incredible how much stadiums have changed over the years.
I agree but not always for the best 😢
Grimsby fan here, one great atmosphere better than an field
Anfield sadly is not what it once was.
Paul Gibbett . You want to start taking ya meds again lad. Baseball ground v ANFIELD. Ya mAd. All those glorious European cup nites in the 70s 80s 90s 00s 10s and on etc. Or Derby v Rotherham utd . League 2 Tuesday night 7-45 kick off. Yeah. I'll pick Liverpool real Madrid. All day. You've gotta support manure utd. Or ya mad. Keep taking the tablets. Tablet.
@@pabloescabarthird6870 try Derby vs Benfica, Derby vs Real Madrid and Derby vs Juventus from the European Cup in the 70s and you'll find an atmosphere that matches anything Anfield has seen, and the Juventus game being a semi final which is as late in the competition as Anfield has hosted. Both are great grounds in their own right in their prime but the Baseball Ground had an incredible atmosphere even with 15000 there.
@@pabloescabarthird6870 Derby had as many European nights as Liverpool in the 70s
@@paulwalker3621 in the 70s the baseball ground had a capacity of 42,000
I loved going to the BBG ,always a great atmosphere & a big crowd, such a shame we had to move..BYE,BYE BBG
Thanks for your video it's sad for the old stadium i watch Derby in danish tv in the seventies love it 🐏🖤🤍
5:16 Shilton never played his 1,000th League game at Derby, it was actually for Leyton Orient (v Brighton) in December 1996. Aged 47.
He played his 1000th professional game at the BBG. Just not his 1000th league game. Which was for Orient, as you’ve mentioned.
The way he keeps looking at the camera after each scene 😭
Had some great times watching the Clarets at the Baseball Ground. From being a kid to an adult I went many times. Best wishes Derby and hopefully see you back in the Premier League from a Claret 👍
That awkward moment when this guy just stares at the camera.
A great ground had many happy times down at the old BBG .
RICHARD
GREAT TO SEE YOU I OFTEN WONDERED WHERE YOU WERE.?
YOU LIKE MANY WERE A PART OF MY TEENAGE YEARS IN DERBY.
I LEFT FOR USA IN 1981 FOUND THIS 11/19/2016
BET YOU WOULD REMEMBER ME.?
I BROUGHT SO MANY 45s FROM YOU.
ALL THE BEST TO YOU M8.!
Nige.
Richard Felix is a Derby Legend
I was always puzzled by this place in that it didn't appear to have a stand like the Kop or Stretford End where vociferous home fans could call their own.
As a Cardiff fan I remember going to the last match at Ninian Park and had sad that was - Shame all these grounds of character are disappearing
I was only 14 when they demolished the place I cried along with afew others seeing the flood lights come crashing down and a horrible empty void in her place!!! I dont cry 😢 but when cloughie passed and the bbg died I sobbed 😭
I had many memories at bbg, but pride park stadium is my favourite ground in the world coyr
It's criminal that they didn't save part of the ground and turn it into a visiting centre for the history of the Baseball Ground for future generations.
*Maybe one day Mel will change 'Pride Park Stadium' back to The Baseball Ground... the home of Derby County*
chandler bing bong long live pride park the home of DCFC
Great video 🐏
the pop stand...................... loved it
pop side sorry.
POP side! The hardcore fans, the drunks, & the comedians.
Brilliant ground !!!
Better than the new ground
So much wood it floated when the Derwent burst its banks.
As a junior paying 50p in 1975 I was under one of the floodlights.
Did he mention where he was?
2018 anyone
Absolute crime what happened there as a ram fan we have achieved nothing since we left
Except a carpark.
Shame on Lionel Pickering for ruining a club after spending a fortune on it .
Were there plans to rebuild the Normanton and Osmoston Ends after the Bradford Fire
I remember dennis walking around at half time selling the telegraoh
This is so Alan partridge 😂😂😂😂
Why can’t they save these old grounds. Part of the National Heritage. God sake how many apartments can you build
Should have kept it for the women's team!
C STAND, C STAND LOL
Why is it called the baseball ground ?
I though baseball grounds were circulated not square
They used to play baseball on the ground before the Derby cricket team took over the ground, the cricket team then formed their own football team as an offshoot (Derby County) and as the football team became more successful and well supported, the ground was then refitted to become the football ground, however, using the name the ‘Baseball Ground’ to pay homage to its history
The Damned United brought me here...
they used chesterfields old saltergate stadium for that film as the baseball ground was no more and had been knocked down by 2004 for the film that started filming in 2008.
4:22 true
Ronnie Pickering?
Do you know who I am?
Would of got beaten up by DLF and some the Chad snd Mackworth boys!!!
@@lakmeister lol easy
Derby’s pitch are the world’s worst.
LOL...a mud bath!
I thought they played cricket in England not baseball
is it haunted?
Was Baseball played there by the American military in World War 2
Was played here in the 1880s when baseball was briefly popular but only for a few years
