We are in Georgia, and we watch your videos all the time. My husband and I are building a new garden, and when we are discussing what to do next, one of us will inevitably say, "Well, Putnam says,...." We even have an area we call "the Putnum Garden" where we've planted a Golden Beacon Gum and groundcover jasmine, Summer Sunset. We don't do much yellow, but when we do, it's to honor YOU!! Thank you for sharing your gardening experience, We love it!!
I like getting 3 plants in each pot when I buy them. I just pull them apart and get two free plants. Have to baby them a bit due to losing some roots but as long as I'm careful I've had very good luck with it and the plants are much better off long term after being separated.
Jim, you are the go-to guy for my garden club since you are only 20 minutes away from us! Thank you so much for all that you, do as it has saved us headaches, heartaches and so much money knowing what to plant and how to care for each variety of plants.
Thank you for these videos! Today, I literally had on my list of things to do raising a new serviceberry tree. It was planted five months ago and seems to have settled too low. As a new-ish gardener, it is so helpful to refer to your videos! I've learned so much. Thanks!
I just purchased 2 Podocarpus "Maki" They are really skinny and wispy compared to the ones in your videos. How do you stake them? Mine are 5 feet tall. Also, will it leaf out more via pruning method you mentioned from last week's Q&A?
good morning Jim! I have a question please? I am absolutely in love with the Winecraft Purple Smokebush. I live in zone 9b texas gulf coast. On proven winners site it said hardy to zone 8. But, when using " Dr. Google " a few sites say to zone 9? Of course I don't want to purchase one and it croak. any advice? I appreciate your knowledge. Thank you, Jennifer
So your camera turns off at 29:59 so the manufacturer won’t have to pay extra taxes. No joke! A “video camera” is classified as anything that can record over 30 minutes. When modern DSLR cameras started to be able to record video, original the video file was limited by the FAT32 file size (4g) which for most camera was around 30minutes. Then tax laws were created to tax video cameras(30+ minutes). Modern DSLR and mirrorless cameras manufacturers, which are now hybrids, still wanted to be taxed as “still cameras” so they had to limit their video recording to under 30minutes to avoid the new video camera tax.
Good morning, Jim! I planted a 3 gallon golden oakland holly in zone 7b about 2 weeks ago. I have it planted where it gets direct sun all day. The problem is the nursery, where I purchased it, had it in a little too much shade. The older leaves are a mix of green with some having light green variegation, and the new growth is green with gold variegation. The shrub is around 3 ft with a 7 ft leader. Since the leader has the best variegation, I didn't cut it back hoping that would keep the plant from reverting to green🤞. Just wanted to get your opinion as you always offer sage advice!
Question about accumulation of mulch/compost/soil amendments: Your yard is relatively new, but although things do break-down in volume significantly, how does one manage the soil level over time. Raised gardens increasingly fill, and perennials/shrubs end up in a small valley (or get buried).
It would be awesome to have you visit an Oklahoma nursery to talk about "oklahoma proven" plants. The weather here is pretty brutal so we need really tough plants. I would also love to see a section in your plants UA-cam page that are "tough as nails" plants for each zone.
I'm in central OK with you guys, and in building my garden mostly over the last year, I've spent an exorbitant amount of time on site selection. I'm fortunate to have a number of shade trees as well as large open areas in my suburban lot. In site selection I have to consider northern winter winds, southern summer winds, where the sun is at throughout the day all year... I have found quite a few shade plants did great even with 60 minutes of afternoon sun around 5pm peak summer, plants I put in this year! I was quite surprised but that's apparently how high shade works (even with low post oaks lol). I did a number of consultations with Jim and he is quite good at thinking about our area. There are a number of plants in sites Jim assured me would be fine, which were in stark contrast to guidance from experienced gardeners at the big local nurseries (whom I absolutely love btw), which ended up working out exceptionally well and solving lots of problems. Site selection in areas like central OK or other extreme areas could be a good idea for future videos to focus on!
I am at war with rose of sharon seedlings, which I consider invasive in my yard and the neighbor's. Finally have removed all but one of my rose of sharon shrubs and that might be on the chopping block as well. Now I just have to maintain control of all the seedlings. 😩 Zone 6a central Ohio.
I was tickled pink yesterday when I got fresh wood chips from a neighbor who had a huge limb fall in his backyard (from a neighbor's tree). He has a wood chipper. It was about 1 1/2 yard waste bags which didn't go too far but I'm afraid of a chip drop!
Jim, could you describe how you prune a tree to increase its caliper? I’m going to need to do this next spring and would love to be more comfortable with how to approach the pruning, if different than basic pruning. Thank you!
In the videos from summer you recommended cutting back shrubs and trees before planting to reduce how much water is needed. I just bought several pollinator perennials that are starting to go dormant. Should I cut these back before planting in the ground this week or plant them now and cut them back late winter like I normally would?
Thank you for being so generous with all of your knowledge! Question: I'm in Northern Utah 7a. Could you also share what plants need more acidity? That's occasionally a problem for me due to our higher ph.
I know salvia was mentioned several times as being deer resistant but they eat it like crazy over here lol! Would you do a segment on the danger of volcano mulches on trees? A friend of mine had a service and lost all her mature trees that were dumped with volcano mulch over the past 5 years. It seems I am seeing this more and more especially on city maintained property too and these beautiful trees die.
Hello Jim, What is the proper way to stake a tree, specifically dwarf Cedrus Deodara? I have a few that just arrived from West Coast yesterday. They are about 5 feet tall. I live in surrounding Dallas, Texas on corner lot facing south. It is extremely windy and I'm hoping to create a windbreak/shade. I have seen methods: 2 tall wood stakes, 1 stake at a 45 degree angle, 3 short stakes at dripline with ties going above and around Central leader somewhat tent-like.
Great show! QUESTION: Which of the red holly series plants stays smallest in your experience? In one place, I'd love a red holly that stays 10-12'-max 16'. This may be totally unrealistic, but some surely mature smaller. My impression is try Little Red or Festive? Thanks!~
I know you use carex grasses in containers often. My question is do they behave like nutsedge if planted in the ground? Some of the carex that are available are gorgeous but I don’t want to deal with them becoming thugs in the landscape. Thanks Jim!!
Hi Jim, I have some large allium bulbs that I want to intermix throughout my border. We live right on the border of 8A/8B. The instructions for planting after the first frost date, which is supposed to be October 23rd according to the Farmers Almanac. Last year we didn't have a frost until early January. Should I wait for the first frost or just go by the predicted first frost of October 23?
Jim I have just recently planted a few small shrubs that are marginally hardy for my zone 7b. At what temperature should I protect them from severe conditions? We are just going through the cold front right now that feels like 30 with the wind. I have placed frost protection over them but I an thinking if that is the threshold to protect these shrubs, I have set up my self for a lot of work this winter to keep these alive. So I appreciate if you talk about winter protection in more detail at some point.
Fort Collins, CO, Zone 5b I transplanted a large Salvia pachyphylla, aka Rose or Mountain Desert Sage, as I wanted to replace it with a Prunus americana. I had no idea the roots were joined together as a large woody tap root/mass/tuber thing, and I ended up unintentionally splitting it in three with each third having a couple of branches. I planted each of the pieces and have been keeping the soil watered. Do you think they stand a chance, or is cutting up a single, large woody root playing with fire? I know a more fibrous root system would likely be more forgiving in this situation. Thanks Jim!
Question: I live near a forest w/ pine trees. Could I take the fallen needles from the ground to mulch my garden beds? Would I be bringing in any unknown pests/issues?
Jim, I'm so confused. You said in this video that things like adding lime to soil to adjust the pH have very short term effects. Recently I watched a video where Tony Avent said that they had raised the pH of the soil at Juniper Level Botanical Garden from 3 point something to 6 point something by adding lime. Please clear this up for me.
Hi and thank you for another great video. Would you offer ideas for safely heating or trapping heat in a low tunnel? I'm in 7B Colorado Front Range and hope to keep growing greens as long as possible into the winter. Our night temps are consistently now low 40's upper 30's. Thank you!
I inherited a Hinoki cypress and a service berry (15’) that a neighbor was trashing. I watered them by filling the bucket of a backhoe and slowing pouring the water to saturate them and fight the drought and heat in NJ. I have a well and don’t like to water as I now have neighbors w/constant sprinklers. My cypress appears stressed but still alive. The service berry has burnt leaves. When can I stop watering?
I just had a river birch tree removed . I plan to plant a smaller tree in its place . Do I have to wait a period of time before planting and is it okay to plant in spring instead of fall if I have to wait ? Zone 5b
Jim, are there any shade-tolerant plants that might be able to tolerate a few hrs afternoon sun in summer? I have a foundation planting on north side of house that for about 6 wks in Jun/Jul gets scorched for a few hrs. It's always in shade rest of year. I was thinking gardenia but already have lots in other places. Hostas and ferns are happy in that location except get roasted for 6 wks even with almost daily watering. Thanks for your great content! I'm in Zone 8a
More great content on the channel! Regarding botanical names, I used to think people who used them were a little pretentious because I didn’t recognize or understand them. After years of gardening, reading gardening books and watching videos like yours, without even trying, I have learned the botanical names of many plants and have come to understand the importance of botanical names. It’s like naming the specific person in a family (Billy Jones) rather than saying something vague like: one of the Joneses. (I hope that made sense). I’d like to suggest using both to help us learn more about the plants around us. 🍁🍂💛🤎🧡🍂🍁
I agree…including the botanical names helps to avoid confusion and is very educational for everyone. When buying plants from certain brands, it’s harder and harder to find this included.
How do you increase the caliper of a tree? I have a 6ft golden rain tree that was just a stick with no limbs I planted this spring. It grew branches and leaves and even bloomed this fall but the wind here in Oklahoma is insane and it could really use more caliper. I had it unstaked for most of the spring and summer but by the end of summer it needed to be staked.
I have pulled out and burned privet until I'm blue in the face. I know it's a seemingly endless job. I have tried to replace the area with native plants. I'm in zone 8b Texas. Do you have a favorite replacement plant for about an acre of lightly wooded part sun dry area??
Jim, have you ever grown Goldenrods? I have a natural area and want to encourage more late summer wild flowers. I have ordered some Goldenrod seeds, stiff and field variety. Should I spread the seeds in late fall or early spring? I have read that they need cold stratification. Any advice would be very much appreciated. I love all your videos.
Are there plants that deter armadillos? We have one that goes to town in our front flowerbed. I’m worried he will eventually damage roots on my young plants. Will he actually harm my plants or do I have nothing to worry about?

Unfortunately you can't do that with every plant. I have gotten ones so root twisted once separated they died.

You have done a great public service by exposing the two or three plants to a pot technique. Explained why "half" of certain plants I planted died!
