With high MERV filters being more common these days, what would it hurt to upsize the standard fiberglass filter size in case someone made a substitution at a later date? Why build to the minimum when building / buying a filter rack is cheap? It's only a one time cost as well as thinking ahead.
well, if you know the CFM then you just transfer the square inches necessary to the duct size, then add something depending on extra length. Unless the house is a 100 foot long ranch you probably don't need to consider extra length at all.

All my installs get a Honeywell filter box installed to unit. Either a 16x25x5 or 20x25x5 merv 13 or 16 filters.
