Instead of washing clothing, waiting for it to dry, why NOT use magic to clean it for you? Dontate a neglible amount of mana, get on with your day.

Nah. Prestidigitation is a multitasker. It can do other things. Fern almost got killed for a spell that ONLY cleans clothes and makes them smell nicely. 😂
Any one remembers ferns fight with the demon? When the demon blood was on her and clothes? How that was used against fern? The laundry spell isn't as lame as you think. If fern had it back then then that demon would've not had the drop on her. Why? Cause the laundry spell could've been used to clean the demon's blood off her. Ferns choice of a spell shows its not just whimsy. It's a sign she is wise and considers the tiniest detail.
I mean no though. When Fern realized the blood had magic in it her and Stark were immediately attacked. It's not like the time to clean their outfits was the deciding factor. Also Stark's arm was pierced by the hardened blood. Washing the blood off of him with a spell likely wouldn't have been enough to prevent him from being tracked. You're reading waaaay too into the decision. She picked that spell because she agrees with Frieren's teachings and perspective that magic is best found and learned on your own, not given to you. So she picked a silly spell knowing it would upset Serie.
True, she had a horrible experience and was ambushed and almost killed by dirty clothes...that might be the only demon that could do that spell, but it would still haunt her. Also this might be able to stop the potion Frieren got for Stark that dissolves clothes. Fern evaded both disasters, but this could be a direct counter to these attacks.

Which is actually my own head cannon explanation on why Frieren is so strong she is crafting new spells based on the applications of basic ones she learned while travelling.
There is a reason Frieren learns folk spells and that’s because there are not only more of them but also because they have more utility then any attack magic
That, and Frieren invented every combat technique she'll need for 99.99% of all her future encounters.
