  • Here is a very rare piece of 8mm film featuring PS 74 - Hamlin Park School in Buffalo, New York. As you can see from the children's costumes, it's Halloween, 1932. The music is by Bert Hirsch, The Little Things in Life (1930), via archive.org. It's not known with certainty who shot this film, but it may have been someone who taught there at the time. This film was transferred to HD by Cineworks in Vancouver in March 2013.

My great grandfather was born in 1932. He's still around and doin alright. Him and my great mamaw will be married 70 years this year. They got married in 1950 and soon after had my mamaw. Lot of lifetimes in this video and a lot of memories I bet.

If you time traveled back to that time and just saw the buildings and houses, you wouldn't know if it was today or 1932.

What a rare find. Interesting to see the mix of costumes at the time, all homemade. Also, at around 1:30 or so, it looks like some type of ceremony near the end of the school year, perhaps the last day of school.

Wow I started PS 74 in kindergarten way back in later 50's. Gee those were the days. Everything looks pretty much the same from the video as it looks today.

Oh, you are so right on both counts! This reminds me heavily of Alfred Eisenstaedt's Children at a Puppet Theater, Paris, 1963. Remarkably, the school building still stands today...

when kids were kids. The costumes were so innocent - nothing dark, zombie, etc. One of the worst years of the great Depression but they were still having fun

You can see so much mischief in that girl at :24
Great save - but I can't help but think that these 10-year-olds are going to be 19 in 1941.

All of them are skinny. This easily demonstrates the impact of fast food and technology.

America was great? In 1932, the United States was suffering through the Great Depression. Fully a third of American workers couldn't get a job. It's nice that the kids in PS 74 had Halloween fun; millions of other kids weren't so fortunate. How much "America Pride" do you think people had? Aside from the economic woes, an entire section of the country was devoted to the total subjugation of a race. Labor unions often had violent fights against corporations for fair wages and working conditions. Women were second-class citizens. The America of today is far greater than the America of 1932.

Oh come on. There's a social fabric intact here you can feel right through this film that is now terribly frayed, and that identity politics is sure to fray some more.

The war was 9 years away and even if these boys were 7 or 8 in this movie, they would have been old enough to fight in 10 years or so, right in the middle of the war years.

Look up on the history of Halloween. There are reporting's from the 1920's-1950's that describe the horrible mischief and damage some of these kids caused to their communities. So I don't know whether I'm misinterpreting your comment or you're just being an actual asshat.
