Bottle Digging- Basement bottles

  • I went out with the idea of metal detecting a site I had dug before. It's an old house site nearby and I had hopes of finding civil war buttons, bullets and a few other camp related items. But, due to the weather conditions (high winds and rain) it would not have made a good video. Flat out...I was miserable. It just goes to show that, some days, the best laid plans go to waste.
With the intention of digging to the bottom of a rubble pile in a foundation to reach good dirt to sift, I stumbled upon these bottles. Protected by the foundation, I was able to make this into a pretty cool bottle dig video. I never expected it out of the day! Sometimes when those things happen, you have to rethink what you are doing and adapt to the situation.
I guess it goes to show you that you never know until you look. Always take chances and have fun, even on the hardest of days.
After all of this, it got me me curious if you have ever found anything while at a site that you have passed up multiple times? Or do you have a story that is similar to mine? Please consider sharing and leave me a comment below!

I dig in the UK. My village has 2 dumps. On one side is a Victorian dump & on the other side is a mid century one. Have brought back some real gems from both tips. Been interested in bottle digging for over 30 yrs now. Love watching fellow diggers from the US. Don't recognise alot of what's found , but I know Coke & Pabst bottles , oh & the California Syrup of Figs Company of course

Fun , would definitely do that more ! When I was growing up in NY I found lots of old house foundations in the woods made out of field stones, what I’d give to go back & dig them now 😊

I've dug in a few foundations over the years. Usually they have very little to offer, but I did dig in a really interesting one once. It had hundreds of bottles that were dumped into it along with some metal. They were mostly 30's-50's screw tops, but when I dug in the floor like you did I discovered that someone had used the floor as their dump around 1900 and found a few nice older bottles and a few other bits. I've also found a lot of dumps that appear to have been directly behind the house against the foundation. I found some 1870's flasks along a foundation wall once.

Back in the day people stored their jars of food and drink in the cellar /basement on shelves .

Dig on the outside of the wall, they would throw garbage in when they backfilled the foundation so it will be of the time period of the house .They sometimes also put a coin under the corner stone for good fortune for the house

Enjoyed the video. Thanks! Seems to me that you found the privy (outhouse). Reason is all the lime, especially when emptying out some of the jars. The deeper you dig, the older things will be. Some of the mason jars are sought after by their collectors, #13 seems the most. Agree with you about the bricks. Some of them might be collectable and others want them to make garden paths etc. Look forward to seeing what else you find there :)

It looks like you'll be spending a lot of time at that location. I have a entry level metal detector and have found about 45 cents, and a lot of pull tabs, I've only been out once. Thanks for posting, Can't wait to see more!!

Interesting video. I dig in old Cellar holes but I am searching for remnants of Iron Stone Crocks that I can piece back together things like that. But what makes these Cellar holes unique is they are all sites from an 1800s tornado path. If I remember correctly the mfg mark on that pitcher changed over the course of many years so it could be older than you think it is I would definitely research that mfg mark.

Did you find anything special from the sifter? Thanks for sharing and HH

Those canning jars are dated 1855-present. The first looked early like a wax-pressed seal top. And the Lock Port is around the same time frame. I take that back. I just saw the wrap-up and those jars are closer to 1900. Oh, I meant to ask, have you probed the ground for provides? With a house site that old, I'm sure there are plenty. Even a farm dump somewhere on the property would be cool to go through.

Maybe it's just me, but right after you disregard the bone, at the 6:10 point of the video, something appears that in my opinion looks sort of like a ring that is gold in color. You disregarded the bone and made three passes with your digging trial and there it is near the top of the picture at the bottom of that roundish thing. Then you innocently covered it over. Am I seeing things? Maybe, but it's at the 6:10 point of the video near the top. I'm not embarrassed to be wrong and redfaced if I am wrong.I guess it's goldish or the video has me fooled. It just looks like something. Meanwhile, that dig looked fun. Thanks for sharing.
