- Frederick Kempster (1889-1918) was an English showman, renowned for his extreme height and also known as the English Giant or Blackburn Giant. He was 7 ft 9.3 in (2.37 m) tall, had an arm span of 8 ft 4.5 in (2.55 m) and weighed 170 kilograms (370 lb).
Between 1967 and 1993 Kempster appeared in the Guinness Book of Records as one of the tallest men in England.
Kempster was born on April 13, 1889, in London to Joseph and Jane Kempster and was the second youngest of four sons and three daughters. His mother described him as "a jolly, laughing boy, of a very liberal and generous disposition".
On Christmas Day 1897, his father died and eight-year-old Kempster and his two-year-old brother George were placed by their mother in the care of a Barnardo's orphanage in September 1898. Shipped off to Canada by the charity, Kempster returned to England on November 12, 1904, aged 15. He was by now suffering from a congenital knee problem leading to ligament problems and growth at the upper end of the tibia. This uncontrolled growth was to lead to his increasing height.
He lived with his sister, Ruth, in Wiltshire and by the age of 22 he was said to stand just less than 7 ft 4 in (2.24 m) and he started to get both public and press attention leading to him seeing his unusual height as a means to make a living. By 1913 he stood slightly over 7 ft 9.3 in (2.37 m).
In June 1911, he joined the Astley and Co.'s American Circus at Chigwell in Essex as a professional giant. In March 1914 he went on a tour of Europe and differing sources alleged his height anywhere from 8 ft 4in to 8 ft 8in. Often the circus' management would exaggerate Kempster's height to entice more visitors.
At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Kempster was in Germany and was placed under house arrest in Berlin by the German authorities. He was released after a month and returned to Britain where he was interviewed by the London press. He visited his brother, George, who was recovering in hospital after being wounded in France in 1916. Kempster continued to tour around Britain in 1917 and contracted influenza in Blackburn.
Kempster died, aged 29, in the Queen's Park Hospital, Blackburn in 1918 and was buried in a 9 ft (2.7 m) coffin in a 10 ft (3.0 m) grave in Blackburn Cemetery. Case notes from the hospital state Kempster was 7 ft 9.3 in (2.37 m) when he died. His grave stone also calls him 'The British Giant'.
His obituary read ” In a coffin 9 feet long, Frederick Kempster was buried in a 10-feet grave at Blackburn. Kempster, whose health had been ruined by a long internment in Germany, was 8ft. 4in in height and 29 years of age. The coffin had to be removed through the window of the hotel where he had been staying. “
Frederick Kempster is a distant relative. His grandfather & my great grandfather were brothers. Long story, but due to a death in the family just before my side of the family emigrated to Australia, Frederick's side decided to remain in England. Wonderful to see his grave. Thank you.
Hi, great walk. Such a shame that it’s not all looked after. Breaks my heart to see graves yards over grown. Beautiful headstones as usual. It’s great that Fredericks grave is looked after. Thank you as always.
Thank you. Hopefully they keep up the maintenance, if not I'll go clean it up myself
The living are not looked after ,so many graves have no chance of being maintained.
It just needs someone with a weedwacker and some spare time.
@@stevenwade7466 The main reason is that the dead never complain.
@@sandgrownun66 Obviously you have never been to a saunce !!!!!!!
I'm from Blackburn myself, Born and bred. Great video, Blackburn Rovers is one of the oldest clubs in the world along with Burnley,Bolton and a couple of others.
Such a shame that no one takes care of these graves/cemeteries.
I love the way nature is reclaiming the land, but it is obvious that some maintenance is done otherwise the grass would be much higher.
@My World My Way Helen Richard the 3rds grave would have been lost long ago without the car park protecting it
The living arn't looked after ,the dead have no chance .
It must be tended to albeit not much. If that was left unmolested for a few years the undergrowth would overwhelm the gravestones.
@@skeggyyou may be right but you can't be sure of. that if the car park was not laid, they may have built on it and discovered the body. That was still one hell of a long shot finding Richard. It was long believed his bones were thrown into a nearby river. It was laid there for 500 yrs undisturbed and then a dopey archeologist put a trowel into his skull.
Very great video. Such soothing voice makes video so wonderful. Thank you
Thanks Bobby
Such details in the workmanship of the headstones!!👍👍👍👏👏👏just beautiful!!! Love from 🇨🇦
I have ancestors with the surname Berry. It was neat to see him mentioning John Berry. Wow that's amazing to see the man who grew to 8 feet four and lived a good life and be buried with such respect and dignity.
Hi , ive decided I like the brambles the blackberries etc, for the colors which make it all look magical. A nice tribute to Frederick Kempster. Sounds very peaceful there. Thank you for creating this video.
Frederick's grave! have never seen one bigger! amazing.. thanks Dan! awesome walk, a pleasure as always, have a wonderful evening ☕ take care 🤗
Thank you Violet, always nice to see you at premiere's
Wow brilliant blog What a brilliant cemetery Would love to see all around it
Thanks Brian, I might go back when winter kicks in, maybe the brambles will die down a bit
Dan, I will not be able to see the premiere but when I get out of work I will look at it. It looks very interesting so thank you very much. I have read about this gentleman, and I have read about the other man that was as tall as him in the 1920s. The tallest man I ever met was Manute Bol the basketball player, he lived in Kansas and so I saw him at the store I worked at. He was 7 ft 2, so looking forward to it thanks.
When in went to high school, we had a basketball player at 7'3 walking down the the hallway his mid chest to his head. Popped up above everyone else.. he and his friend went out to a party and crashed his car into a cornfield and they didn't find them until corn harvest season began, almost 4 months later, they went airborne and no knocked down corn to suggest, I was going to do a video and post it on my page, but know it's just a road . I felt so bad for the parent's... 🤗. From Wisconsin 😊
@@Regina0964 wow
Manute Bol was 7'7
I liked seeing these old cemeteries but it make me sad to see them in such bad shape. Wish there some on to care for them. These people all need and deserve respect.
I truly loved this walk! The stones were lovely...and who can resist your speedy little trot through the grounds? 😅
Thanks for this video. Best smile all day!
Thats nice to hear, thank you
Nice walk...great place...
I'm glad you visit other people. Not just the one person you came to see.
I've always thaught it was a shame regular people don't get visited by youtubers.
Another great video Dan! That is amazing how tall the man was, his grave plot could fit two people, but it was just for him. I can’t help but feel kind of sorry for the guy though, as well as people in his same predicament. Where they had to earn a living by joining circuses, carnivals and I hate to say “freak shows”. Hell of a way to survive. Oh my shirt and decal is already on its way, should be here some time next week, but with the thanksgiving holiday, who knows. Take care brother
I know it so sad, but I hope he had some enjoyment in his life. It must have been frustrating being that tall. I've been thinking about him a lot after this video, I'll always remember him now
Wow that’s so young to go to another country. So sad that his family was broken up after the death of their Father. The stones here are brilliant a lot of history here I could watch for hours wonderful film thanks until the next. 😊
It’s nice to hear you say Rest In Peace. What history you’re experiencing.
Thanks, usually don't say it out loud but it's always said in the mind
What a shame the graves have been neglected / forgotten about, I expect the relatives of these people are no longer with us.but it’s a real shame to see a grave yard like that 🙏🏻 amazing grave of Fredrick 🙏🏻 thank you for sharing 🙏🏻
@@juliewitt1411 I still think it’s sad all the same
It's kinda scary to know that Mr. Kempsted died in 1918, and the tallest man that ever lived (Robert Wadlow) was born in 1918.
There were no squirrels, so you went into chipmunk mode! Another great walk. Just love the quite beauty of Victorian cemeteries.
hahaha
Another wonderful walk. I'm really enjoying binge watching your videos. Love from Hampshire x
Hi @Cathy Meyer's... Cool video here.. just that I missed it, next time I'll catch it. 🤗❤️
3:14 How can it be that the founder of one of the oldest clubs in the world and recognized in England has such an abandoned and precarious grave. In my country, a founder of a club of those characteristics would have a mausoleum.
What an absolutely stunning and atmospheric cemetery... I know folks won't like the overgrown nature of it, but it's really beautiful in its own way. Probably my favourite that I've seen on your channel. The town I live in here in Canada has a really beautiful cemetery that is more maintained than this, but looks just as lovely in the autumn. This reminds me of what it might look like if they started to neglect the mowing. BTW, can we get a link to your merch store in the description or as a pinned comment?
I would love to see some of your cemeteries, especially in fall. Sure I'll put the link in the description to the video.
Thanks again Dan.
Thank you to you as well mate
I had never heard of this British giant, so thanks for doing a programme on him. Though the graveyard desperatly needs some work. As a teenager I grew up in a small village in Kent where the local farmer would herd his sheep into the grave yard in the springtime. Once there, the sheep would happily munch away at all the grass etc and kept the graveyard nice and trim. Perhaps they should follow suit in this Lancashire graveyard, though with some of the newer residents they now have there, the sheep might not be safe anymore.
Creepy cemetery. After you shook out your trainer lol the speeded up part was surreal! 🤣🤣🤣
Enjoying this thankyou❤
That's the longest grave site I've ever seen thank you
Hello mate.i like your videos but when you stop at a grave and give there name can you look for the date aswell as it's a lot more interesting to me and maybe others.cheers!
So true Carl, when I'm doing video's I always maybe take longer because I'm drawn to the very old one's and I love finding both dates . 🤗 From Wisconsin 😊 United States
Great Video! A lot of history there.
Very interesting story and grave and cemetery as well! Thanks for sharing 😊
Thank u 4 the walk through...fascinating 😊 breaks my heart these cemeteries are not taken care of 😢😢
Thanks so much I had never heard of him and I know a fair bit about the victorians , will explore this channel further .
Thank you Phillip.
My name is Rachael Hamer! On the grave it said Rachel Hamer wife of Edwin Hamer. I got chills! LOL
Reincarnated lol
Scary when that happens isn't it ha
I just love old cemeteries. I try to imagine the lives of the people buried in them. Fredericks grave was interesting. I’ve never seen anyone that tall before. Just incredible.
I visit cemetry, s since 55 years.
Greetings from Holland
New subscriber from USA, i have been enjoying your video and commentary.
I enjoy doing the same exploration in my country, i live in Kansas and i am lucky to find graves in the early 1800's
Hello to Kansas! As I always say...we do old stuff really well here. Thank you subscribing to the channel
why amazing story
Some beautiful headstones there!
I love this cemetery! Been there quite a few times!
Good idea the person who suggested sheep and goats😊
Hi, I really like your old cemeteries...👍
Even though it's overgrown it's still beautiful I love to walk through there
Uncanny to visualise those gigantic bones lying within the grave.
Thanks for sharing and making me laugh 😃
Glad you enjoyed it Sabine hehe x
I read that Robert Pershing Wadlow was buried in a piano case.. All they could find I imagen...
U said the sign says not to go up to those graves. Why can't u go up to them? That one part of ur video was spooky. It was like spirits talking. I love ur videos. They r very interesting. Thank u for sharing.
Unsafe ground, there were lots of holes everywhere. Thank you. and Thanks for watching x
Great video, sad so many graves are abandoned & falling into disrepair, but it really tickled me when you speeded it up when you were walking, I thought I watched Alvin & the Chipmunks.
Dan, the cemetery was very interesting thank you for sharing. I wonder if that Entwistle family was related to John Entwistle The Who band member. Anyway great tour, thanks.
That's a very beautiful dangerous place, well I don't think we will see such a long grave anywhere else soon, thanks for the walk and the bit of silliness 😅
GREAT VIDEO WHAT AN AMAZING CEMETERY SO OLD AS WELL
THANK YOU FOR FINDING FREDRICKS GRAVE
SO SAD HE DIED SO YOUNG
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
R I P FREDRICK 🙏👍
Quite a shame that much of the place has overgrown. These are historic graves and should be taken care of as such. The sheer craftsmanship of a lot of the monuments. Makes me want to explore with some tools.
Wow, that is incredible. Quite a long grave. This is a very interesting cemetery. So much history.
The flaking of old stone is called desquamation. I see it a lot on old buildings, and monuments, especially old limestone more than sandstone on my walks. Glad I just found your site. Cheers.
Nice content..love fr. Philippines
It's so sad to see older parts of graveyards left to grow wild, these graves are invaluable to local history and people who like to roam around these Dead Good places
Beautiful place😊
What a hauntingly, beautiful cemetery with some fasciating headstones, thankyou for this walkaround!
Woww very interesting I'm shocked the cemetery isn't being kept in good condition. Thanks for sharing from Holmfirth West Yorkshire 💙
I have a lot of respect when it comes to cemeteries,I don’t like it when they don’t take care of the graves or the grounds.
Fascinating, so peaceful thankyou for sharing this with us 👏⚘🌻
Subscribed. Im new to your chanel
Some cemeteries are deliberately given over to nature, or parts of them. I wouldn’t like to see newer ones like that, but, IMO, as long as they are old graves, it’s good. Living people take so much from nature, once we’re gone, it’s nice to give something back.
THE CHURCH YARD WERE MY DAD IS BURIED IS SO TINY. WENT ONE DAY THEY HAD PUT BOARDS OVER MY DAD TO BURY SOMONE ALONGSIDE. THE SOIL WAS ON TOP. I BROKE MY HEART CRYING. PHONED CHURCH WARDEN WAS ASSURED EVERTHING WOULD BE AS IT SHOULD. ( THE STONE ANGEL WAS PUT TO ONE SIDE) WENT BACK A COUPLE OF DAYS AFTER. O.K. ALRIGHT , BUT THE NEW GRAVE WAS 2FT AWAY WIDTH WAYS FROM MY DAD. BLOODY AWFUL !!
I hope more of this cemetery will be cleaned and made lovely again. I think it might need a few more walks. And there is life all around those sleeping, it does need some squirrels. :)
"too busy falling down all your holes" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I was annoyed at that point lol
@@deadgoodwalks Yeah, but it sure is fun to really laugh out loud when you say something like that. My parents were both British and there is always that dry sarcastic humor I pick up on.
I wonder why some areas are more kept than others? I like a bit of overgrowth, but tame enough to be safe when wandering the grounds. Fall is my favorite time of the year, it really sets the stage for your walks! Glad it was warm enough that you weren't miserable!
Als je daar snachts zou lopen....
Holy crap he was massive, Thanks
Good video bro
Graveyards don't have to be interesting Dan, we just like reading the old stones. I had a very good chuckle during the sped up portion in this one. Deb of Oz.
oh yeah that was funny, I'll have to do some more sped up ones.
Those headstones were works of art!! I’d like something like this verses what they sell now. I wonder how flat they are and what is it made off.. I wanted you to walk around the obelisks and steeples. I would like that, they’re on all continents and feel heavenly, church, God. I wanted to see the nude statue. When you come to statues, if the head is off, show where it’s broken.I like to try to figure out what things are made of. You could talk about energies? Your thoughts ? I wanted to ask if you tried calling someone to go take care of the cemetery?? You might get it taken care of.It needs to be kept up. It’s a beautiful place. Call the town Hall, Town Council. If you can walk totally around the grave. Show a bunch more, the older, and more ornate , or a beautiful stone… unique ones. Headstones, graves, Memorials, don’t look like that. Instead of walking down the road with the camera pointing straight aim at all that beautiful craftsmanship. You could do a 5 part series on this Cemetery . You could study this town and make a documentary. ❤ Seriously. If you’re near.. show the condition, and the beauty. You could get better cameras.. Grants
Most of these old cemeteries are unsafe, due to the fact the grounds were never properly designed for constant water irrigation drainage due to heavy rainfall. The constant rainfall means the graves become unstable and sink into the ground. If you was to step around certain graves the earth would most likely give way.
An incredible and tragic story.
Awesome 👍 video wow All grown up be safe watching it now 👍🙏👍
Oh, I would love to clean that place up! The older stones could look new again. People would come to read the inscriptions and take pictures of the amazing stones. Well, that's my dream anyway.
I'm so glad that a interesting grave and history is kept well. Shame the grave yard doesn't keep the rest of the place tidy, they have so much history going to waste who ever is responsible should be ashamed.
I used to play in their as a kid and visited his grave loads of times i lived on Sapphire st which is right nxt door to the cemetery wall
That Alfred Sharpe was 6 years old.
We should get our new visitors to tidy these cemeteries up.
Muitas histórias nesse lugar!
Frederick Kempster was just over 7ft 9ins when he dies, apparently he was that tall he had to stand on a chair to put his hat on .
Wow, impressive🪦
Have you visited any graveyards in Southend-on-sea, Essex?
I've not got that far yet, I keep getting distracted by London when I'm down that way. Hopefully one day
Frederick kempster
What is the meaning of the symbol over the tomb of James varley? I've seen some of the tomb have that symbols on it. I'm sorry for asking. I'm just curious of many symbols and the design of the tomb. So unique... Btw, i love your content so much😉
Thank you. I think it was the star of David
What is the name of this cemetery?
Sad how young some people were when they died, life was much harder then even for the well off, professional types. I should think Frederick had some genetic/hormonal problem.
Túbal-cain refers to Genesis 4:22, "Also, Zilʹlah gave birth to Tuʹbal-cain, who forged every sort of tool of copper and iron"
God damn it, number 2 in the comments .....
It's hard to beat Joel, he's on it
I did a search and it appears he was 7 feet 9.3 inches tall. Astley Circus exaggerated his height. "Even though doctors were able to confirm that Frederick was seven foot nine, papers still claimed that he was more than eight foot tall".
Yeah there's a few different records, I just went with his obituary
Idol dan🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Quite a wild one it reminds me of our very old one where I live. It's probably worst than that. I've only found out recently why graves face East...so they face the sun rising of a new day. Also its said to be for Christ's second coming. Everyday a school day !
Yeah I'm always learning too, seems like we're all learning together actually ha
Iam from blackburn i never knew anything about this how interesting
You need to do the child of hale .. remember going to that as a kid with my grandad
Thanks, I completely forgot about him
@@deadgoodwalks memory jogged
British Robert Wadlow?
This site is definitely neglected by the local council, what a shameful thing.
Perhaps you could visit the Village of hale near Liverpool ,for the history of the Childe of Hale who was reputed to have been 9feet 3 inches, in the 17th Century,he was taken to be the Kings Wrestler it is said that a Thigh bone in the local Church proves his height, the local pub had a Lifesize painting of him on the wall,
I will for sure, I didn't know about the bone! Is it still there?
@@deadgoodwalks I have`nt been to hale for many years but i understood the thigh bone is in a glass case i the church,a house in the village is supposed to be where he lived with a small window he is supposed to put his feet out of when in bed because the room was`nt big enough the story is supposed to be true because there is records of him being King Charles the seconds wrestler in the late 1600s.
