www.acrylicuniversity.com I welcome you to come to our site and look around. If I can say so myself, I believe it to be the most comprehensive acrylic painting platform in the world.
This is one of the best videos. I love the basics. I love Acrylic University and so glad I am a lifetime member there. Jed Dorsey and Diana Shynne and their guest artists are wonderful.
Hello, I’m so glad I found your channel. I struggle with coloring mixing and acrylics all the time. You’ve encouraged me to try a different approach to the whole process. I don’t paint quickly, often loosing my focus and original idea. Keeping the light source and shadows in perspective eludes me. My darks and lights never pop. I like your paintings, they are inspiring. Thank you for encouraging the world to paint with your no nonsense approach. “Just keep working on it.” “Change what you don’t like”. ✌🏽 ☮️.
This is just a short course but really relevant. Everything that has been said is really helpful and valuable especially for the beginner like me. Thank you so much Jed for sharing this!
I’m a new artist and just started to teach myself acrylic painting and this video is AMAZING! You covered pretty much everything one needs to know about acrylic. Awesome job! Thank you 😊
I always buy Heavy Body acrylics - I can thin them down as needed. It takes much more medium to thicken up soft or fluid paints. Looking forward to more info from you.
Thank you Jed! What a great idea to create mixing colors papers. It seems to me that for acrylics it's more useful than for oils. I did for certain colors, like green, etc. But for three is going to be so helpful.
A friend of mine like a mentor of mine from when I was drawing with pencils told mr to try using colors, soft pastel to start which i was afraid to try but like he said it's easier and a lot more fun.he was right and from there ai did sketches with soft pastels and colored pencils and now with markers and mixing them altogether. Today that same mentor came by just to tell me to start painting and referred me here, this is the 1st video I'm watching how to get started with acrylic paint, liked and subscribed 🙏 I'm excited with this new journey
I am trying to learn how best to paint in acrylics….and your tutorials are awesome… great way of teaching….especially how you express yourself, facts as well as a bit of personal thoughts about the subject matter… Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge…
I was trying to find a video about painting figurines with acrylic but stumbled across this. I just learned sooooo much. I just spent a small fortune in colors and was about to buy more. There a lot of information here. And in insulted to try a painting! Why not? I'm already a Crafter. Maybe painting could be what I've been missing.
I'm self-taught, but could've saved a lot of time if I had known the basic steps you just laid out. Am now waiting for the class on Friday, after watching the 2 live videos on trees and water. Great videos! Thank you so much
You never disappoint Jed! Thank you very much for this important information. I have been painting on and off for over 30 years now and, I always learn something new from your videos! Kudos to you and your crew for another job well done!
Thank you for this video! It is a great resource for self-taught artists. I especially like the way you set up your palette and the small practice canvas works. I am definitely going to do those!!!! I love my Masterson palette too :) See you tomorrow!!!
This is a great video to remind me to just get started. I have had difficulty getting my brush strokes to look like yours, so I need to concentrate on changing directions. Thank you for your encouragement and guidance!!
Hi Jed! Thank you so much for 1) sharing your faith, it's the reason I stayed here,2) for being open and blunt. Q: I really would like to learn in a more straightforward brush stroke manner, a more realistic manner I suppose. Is this more complicated than the method you use? Do you have advice on how to develop that other than practice? Thank you for your help and time. God Bless
Thank you for your encouragement! I believe if you keep refining - basically keep working on form and the smaller nuances, it is just taking a painting past where I take it. You might use smaller brushes, work on the details more. I'm not sure if that's the most complete answer, but if I understand your question correctly, that's what I would say. The principles are the same with how I paint, but you would just take the process further to create a more detailed painting...
Thank you for this video. I've been curious about how you learned to use your brushes? You make it look effortless. When I've tried to hold my brush and use your technique it feels awkward and I struggle.
Hi Joanie, great question - I will try to put something out here that is specific to that. As it is, the best videos I would recommend would be to look at some of our live sessions - Friday Night Live included - and simply watch the way I mix color. While it is not a direct lesson, I think you could find it informative. But I will also work on the idea of putting out another video specific to color mixing :-)
Awesome thanks so much. I agree that doing a canvas full of color mixing with only three colors is such a great exercise. Thanks for your reply and all your help❤️🙏🏻
Great video recap of so much information. I'm so glad I watched this because I always feel like a beginner :) and this investment in time paid off. Thanks so much Jed for your work encouraging us. It matters. Now, back to painting my water study homework!
I'm glad I found your channel. How do you finish your paintings? do you cover them with varnish or something like that? Many thanks. You have another subbie here.
I have a question about the design. Do you mean the image you are going off of and understanding of values of color? What if I am not a great drawer? Does it matter if I am working from a photo I took that I try to draw it out first? Is that the design? Guess I am looking for clarification on what you mean by design. Thanks for the video.
Hi Heidi, great question - I'll try to clarify. Sometimes a reference photo makes a great design as it is. But, more often than not, the design can be improved to create a better painting. So, I like to do several small thumbnail sketches of the scene and change a few of the elements to see which design is the most compelling. If you go to AcrylicUniversity.com you will find a free course called "How to Paint Anything in 5 Steps" that goes into more detail about the whole process - hope that is helpful! :-)

Is the Golden Mean useful in compositions or planning paintings?
Super refreshing to find another acrylic painter on this platform that actually knows what they're talking about

Jed! What a great video - Can't believe you covered as much territory as you did in 14 mins!
There are two reds, warm and cool, two yellows, warm and cool, two blues a warm and a cool. Love your work.
I am loving learning to paint!, I learn something with every painting I do! Its fun to learn even though I have a long way to go!

A good replacement for black is a mixture of ultramarine blue and burnt ambar.
Yes, absolutely - another similar one to that is Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna, which I also like...
Best intro instruction ever, comprehensive and encouraging, well done, thank you!

Your double color triangles & and mixed color sheets work for me.
You inspire me to be fearless. I think I can.
I love this. I've been painting a long time, but even so I learned a couple exciting new things. There is always more to learn. Cheers!
Thank you from Australia.
What is your opinion of Golden Open acrylics for a slower drying option?
Thank you for this video! It is a great resource for self-taught artists. I especially like the way you set up your palette and the small practice canvas works. I am definitely going to do those!!!! I love my Masterson palette too :) See you tomorrow!!!

Can anyone identify the maxfield parrish style piece shown at start?
It would be good to include in the process these last two or three steps:
Signing your art
Isolation coat
Varnishing
Cheers!
Yes, perhaps in another video!
I learned more in that 14 mins (that I can apply) than I have in 2 years of random videos.
The supply list for the current session 1 will not load for me. Just a screen shot would be great.
