    Have you struggled with wheel maintenance?

    • @jacobd4421

      Radial truing! I feel like I can't get radial truing done correctly unless I remove most of the tension from the spokes, and start from scratch by truing, dishing, tensioning, and repeating that until the wheel is straight and tensioned again. This puts a lot of wear on my spoke nipples. Any little tricks to radial truing to prevent having to do this every time I maintain my wheels (about once every couple of months) would be awesome.

      #gmbntech #askgnbn Great guide to spoke adjustment. One thing you didn't mention that I learnt from experience. If you have bladded spokes you need an extra tool to keep them straight when tightening or losing. I kept having spokes break until I was told about this. Now I have the extra tool I can keep them straight and have not had a spoke break since

      Hi!
      Wheel (Rear) to frame gap ratio has been decreased on left side(non drive side) of my bike suddenly after having some repair work (broken spoke change and wheel truing) in a bike workshop. Already opened rear wheel and assembled multiple times on my own. Seems not working. Looking for a helpful suggestion.

    One further handy hint in respect of wheel care. Using a clay bar on the rims, followed by a proprietary wax and sealant, makes keeping them clean effortlessly easy. I also do the same for the spokes and hub, but that is taking it a little far.

      @gmbntech  6 років тому +4

      I also now clay bar my bike frames as well. It is surprising what a difference that it can make, especially if carrying it out on a new frame. Satin finished frames seem to really benefit from it.

    Hi Doddy. You mentioned that only thin oil should be used on a pawls system. I have serviced many Hope hubs over the years and Hope actually recommend a small amount of grease. They use Mobil XHP 222 grease in the factory and that is now my main grease

    • @mikieson

      i could see maybe a tiny pinhead drop..but no more..the more grease the easier it is to get more junk stuck in there..

      If you do bicycle maintenance very frequently, you can use very thin and very little lube (and you'll be "faster"). Grease(s) are better for staying where you put them for longer time frames. When you have top-dollar components, I'd follow their recommendations. ;)

    It’s worth mentioning that a guitar tuning app can be used for checking spoke tension. For the average user it’s not perfect but it can get you close. For the master wheel builder it can be quite a useful tool.

    • @sp00n

    When you stress relieve your spokes, don't try to push the wheel with the axle on the ground, this will stress the bearings. Instead, use some sort of ring where the end caps don't take all the pressure. I'm using an old gorilla tape roller (no idea what's to correct name in English is) to place the wheel on.
    I.e. something like this, just the other way around, the roll lies on the ground, and you're pushing the wheel into it:
