Building a NEW Amiga 2000 in 2022 - Part 2. Zorro, bluster, keyboard and case

- Back with the Amiga 2000 EATX build this week to finish off the board, it needs its all the slots fitted and its needs that one thing which makes it an A2000, that’s the buster or in our case bluster chip.
We also need to sort out a keyboard so the old A500+ looses another limb as we take that and modify it for our A2000.
Then after all that its just time for the big case reveal… what will it be and will it have RGB lights???

By the end of the video you might be able to tell I was a bit tired (it honestly took about 3 hours to build into the case) and there were a few points I forgot to cover.
1. The gotek buttons were put at the back of the case just above the fan. Not the most practical position but it works.
2. The ATX power cable needs an extension to properly clear the zorro slots. One has been ordered and I'll post an update picture once it gets here.
3. I still hope to get the board professionally cleaned at some point but still struggling to find anywhere that can do it. If anyone knows of anywhere around Belfast, N.Ireland please let me know.
4. The cost, I can't believe I forgot to cover this but for anyone thinking of building an EATX2000, costs for my build to date are around £500. The board plus components etc were about £300. The A500+ from which everything was salvaged cost £60. The case was £70 then just allowing the remaining £70 to cover PSU, gotek and sundries.
Have a friend who built in a A1200 into a tower i took 2weeks ordering powercables and routing stuff ;) i know i make videos to on youtube RB Retro Bunker so i know how mutch energy stuff can take. I doing a break now to mutch ordinary work and have 3kids :)
I think you do great work
So I have soldered 5 A500 ++ replica boards and a sixtyclone C64 board. The way I clean them is not by spraying isoprop then add a rag or paper and toothbrush to suck the flux up in the rag/paper. I poor isoprop in a spraycan then I spray alot of isoprop over the whole board while holding it level, then I tip the board as soon as I have soaked the board really well so all the isoprop (and flux mixed with the isoprop) runs off. It's important to spray as much as possible so it will poor off when you tip the board. I do this over and over again on both sides of the board until it's clean. It's not unrealistic to use almost 0.5 liters of isoprop on one board when doing it like this. But it works really well and cleans up the boards really well. While spraying you could use a toothbrush to loosen up the worst flux. then continue to spray and tip the board so it runs off. Doing this it will look like the board was professionally cleaned. Just remember to spray alot of isoprop.

I think you could just drill a small hole below the USB ports for a select switch, maybe in the future. You should get a big amiga vinyl graphic cut for that removable front panel, you have all that flat space to play with, would be neat i think.
I really genuinely love this project, its such a cool neo-retro adaptation and I hope that I can build something like it some day.
I love the aesthetic inside of the case and i hope you continue to add and expand to it, I cant wait to see where it goes. Maybe see if you can get a fancy individually sleeved ATX extension cable for the power connector on the board, i think it could really complement the look. Maybe also a rounded style floppy and IDE cables like we used to use in the 2000s pc modding scene.
I also cant wait to see what you do with the keyboard, maybe look into doing a stacked laser cut perspex and alloy case for that?
@@draggonhedd I came really close to drilling holes for the buttons but ultimately decided against it as if the drill slipped or if I was off by any amount it would make a mess of the front of this otherwise perfect case.
I have plenty of ideas for future expansion of this machine. Ultimately I'd like to have each of those expansion slots populated but I'm not rushing to it. Better to take my time deciding on the right expansions to make the most out of the system.
I like that idea for the keyboard, I'll look into getting some acrylic cut.

I would like to say: You'r better in soldering the 'hardly' IC's, than the SMD chipcomponents 😅 (with that massiv soldertip!!)
I have to take an IPC course every two years, to stay 'IPC certified' in (also) soldering.
First lesson in soldering is: Tin all pads, and clean them afterwards with f.ex desoldering braid.
By this, the pads have solder on it, and u allready can 'stick' ur component to the pad, like u did, just with heating both and without extra flux nor tin. Thats so much easier!
From there, u did it IPC-like: solder 2 diagonals, and solder the rest with flux.
Doing so also with chipcomponents will do the trick to not only funktional solderings, but also beautiful and clean solderings.

Pretty cool. I am building an A4000TX in a black tinted glass Fractal Define 7 case with silent PSU (fanless) and the case has a 5.25 drive bay which have been all but exterminated on modern cases. Perfect blend of new and old.
I only came here for the soldering montage, but stayed while you built an entire 16-bit computer...
Amazing work, I'm speechless. I love AMIGA , Sharp's X line, MSX, Pc88 etc. Here in my country you don't have much access, MSX yes, but AMIGA, it's more complicated. I wish success to your channel and a hug here from BRAZIL. see ya.
This project seems to have turned out pretty well. There are a few improvements I would suggest though.
1) The LCD for the GOTEK drive is in a location which I can only imagine being quite hard to read. What I would suggest there is to move it so that it could sit in between the casing that hides the PSU and the glass.
2) Without a bridge board I think the ISA slots are probably going to be little more than decorations. As such maybe a bridge-board project could be a good thing to consider.
3) The keyboard looks a bit shocking without any casing around it. The only thing I could find that I would be sure to fit properly is a kit you can get from Checkmate which comes to £65. I would post a link but UA-cam doesn't seem to like me doing that. That kit is not exactly cheap but maybe you could get something 3D printed instead.
Honestly with the case sitting on the desk the LCD is at eye level so isn't hard to see. A bridge board I think is a must at some point considering the other half of my collection is all IBM compatibles and yes the keyboard is a bit of a mess still. The checkmate case is an option I've been looking at but its expensive enough. I do like the idea that another comment suggested and that's to build out just enough to cover in the PCB etc. Think I'll try that first.

for the floppy led you want to do it the A2000 way and pickup the HDD not the floppy. The floppy had its on light in a A2000

Ooh yeah, all those nice slots to fill up with goodies... and no worries about hardware failures (well except for the original chips dying of course) since everything is modern tech. This is such a cool project. Can't wait to see what's coming in the future.

fantastic job! For the cpu accelerator i suggest to try the pistorm emu68k, it is a baremetal cpu emulator so no loading times!
I've got a pistorm in one of my 500s. I am considering it for this machine but I'd probably just use it for the CPU. I know it'll do rtg and hard drive images but want to use the Zorro slots for those things.

Maybe mount the board in a metal fixture before adding the slots to keep them straight and possibly minimize the warpage?
To really show off the board in there i'd put like an adhesive 12v RGB (or just plain white) LED strip in there and power it via one of the no doubt many cables from the PSU. Maybe the camera doesn't do it justice but it seems very dim from here. If you want more reliable hard drives in there there's SATA to IDE bridgeboards, although of course more modern HDDs don't have quite as audible seek noises.
I would personally have gone with a case that has space for a floppy drive and a CD-ROM drive, but that's just personal preference. Using the built in USB ports for Goteks is a nice touch, and makes for a very clean look. It might be cool having an RGB controller cycling through the colours of the Commodore logo, but that could also get old really fast ^^

No drive bays in a case, sigh, I have that covered in my Aopen ATX "Desktop" case(It's not a tower or a cube case), the case came with a 235 watt ATX psu, a Seagate Medalist 2.1GB 3.5" EIDE hdd, a Mitsumi 3.5" 1.44mb floppy drive in Beige, plus I added to this Beige case a Creative 5.25" 48x CD Rom EIDE drive in Beige(works). The case has 3-5.25" and 2-3.5" external drive bays and 2-3.5" hdd bays, of course the front is yellowed as are the 3 matching drive bay blanks(1-3.5" and 2-5.25"), the metal top and sides needed Mr Clean scrubbing pads and they worked better than Windex for the metal part, inside the case is some dust and no corrosion. I could set another PC or a monitor on this case as the case resembles 3 stacked pizza boxes. It'll make a purrfect home for an EATX Amiga 2000 motherboard, but that is for me, everyone else do what you want. Once the front plastic parts are cleaned, I'm not sure what to do, treat the parts and spray clear paint on the plastic to try and prevent a relapse into light yellow or spray paint. Treating with hydrogen peroxide and UV in the sun I've never done(retro brighting), though I've seen that being done, but spray paint I can do. I just need to solder about 135 components to the motherboard, my 600w iron will get a workout. Keep the good videos. I try and stay subscribed and I give "likes" like water flowing out of the faucet.

Great Job! Try mnt´s zz9000. It provides rtg including ethernet and flicker fixer on board. In addition you have the option for the ax sound module with ahi / mhi drivers on top. The card even comes with quite cool status leds.
That could be an option, it could certainly tick a lot of the boxes that I'm looking to cover.
You ask what we would have done differently: I would probably have gone for a more retro-looking tower in white/beige instead of the black one, to make it look more like a machine that C= could have built back in the day. But that's a matter of personal preference. Awesome build never the less - I really enjoy your videos 😊

Honestly, I'm not much for surface mount projects (yet), but your cool/calm presentation made it look more approachable than ever... especially with this hybrid through-hole and surface-mount project that I did not know of before.
Thanks. A few years back I was very cautious when it came to smd work but honestly now it's quicker than through hole. Only thing I'd say is you must get good flux and solder. I use that chipquik stuff and while it looks expensive it makes all the difference.
The A1200 is a hybrid between SMD and through hole mounts, and I think A600, A3000 and A4000 are too, in the original designs
@@MallaganVloggs My main retro machines are the C64 and Amiga 2000, so I'm used to through hole work. Arctic Retro did some A600 work and definitely has lots of SMD in tight spaces, by contrast.
I'm up for doing more SMD though - e.g., fixed some Bose Wave radios, but that's primarily consisted of replacing old/burnt-out SMD components (caps and resistors) with creatively-placed through hole components.

I've looked and the checkmate keyboard case. It's a nice option but is a bit expensive for me just now. I probably will end up getting one although first I want to try printing something.
the proper pins you should have been using for the bluster PCB contacts is Digikey ED3864-64-ND
That looks amazing, Well done :) I wouldn't bother with the headphones jack due the the hard panning nature of Amiga audio, headphone audio doesn't sound that great, instead I'd replace it with a shaft encoder for the gotek. Ali express do large oled displays that will work with the gotek boards 128x64 rather than 32. I wonder if anyone is going to re-ignite the usb interface for the amiga. There was one that plugged into the clock port on the A1200. It would be amazing if someone did a zorro usb card. Also I didn't realise you had a patreon account. I'm there :)

It's a great project to build. If you did the 1200 and 500 there is nothing here beyond that in terms of complexity.
I'd love to try the 4000tx next. Although getting that chipset is expensive.
Please follow my enclosure/case recommendation and then USE THE SYSTEM TO EDIT YOUR VIDEO OF THE BUILD using of course Video Toaster SFX and any other goodies and toy enabled features that you get installed on this baby!
My case opinion is late, but here it goes regardless! It should be a FULL TOWER enclosure, preferably from the first generations of ATX enclosures as later on Full ATX enclosures became quite rare indeed.
This will have at least 5 5"1/4 drive bays and 2 3"1/2 drive bays, these being external, internally you will have a bunch of 3"1/2 disk slots typically completing the space from the last floppy bay to the bottom of the case and and few above the PSU section (if a secondary PSU is not used as FULL ATX will have space for additional power supply(s) above the normal ATX PSU.
This would be the perfect enclosure for an Amiga fully equipped for video editing with Video Toaster, SCSI Disk controllers and storage and many other addon goodies that will easily fit such a case :)
My recommended case/enclosure is easily twice as tall as the one that you ended up using! Still, I would love you to implement the request on my comment regardless of its lateness. You know, using Real live Amiga Hardware for what it was meant to be used for in video production but in todays world. It deserves a fighting chance in my opinion :P
I originally had intended to go the route of the full tower case but they were just so few and far between. Any I found were in poor condition or just way too expensive. I ultimately gave up on that idea and instead went the route of the modern style case. I know its not to everyone's taste but personally I am very happy with how it turned out.
As for the video editing thing I'm sure it would be fun to play with but I don't think it would be practical for me. Getting all the required analogue equipment as well as the Amiga cards would likely run into the thousands. If you are interested in this type of thing though I'd highly recommend you check out the 10 Minute Amiga Retro Cast, he has a video series on the toaster from a couple of years ago.
You mentioned doing lighting. I'd say do one of those fluorescent tubes you'd see in a lot of older 2000s case mods. It's a neat look and not too over the top and also something almost bridging the two eras. :p

the boot speed when Amiga's not held up waiting for floppy disk, to spin, it close, to hardware inbeded OS stuff, I do think if amiga the company had made more effete is getting more drives in the machines, it wouls made a lot of difrence to how amiga looked at, it did have bets it even had ram disk, and a virtual floppy in memory, but was just flogged to the public it will boot from one floppy, and it was left at that?

I just took another look at the keyboard pinout and it looks like a typical PC AT keyboard would would without modifications.

I use chipquik smd491 flux. Works well although I find the nozzle of the syringe gets clogged occasionally.

Now, you might want a bridgeboard so you can use the EISA, a gfx-card, network card, sound card. And an accelerator, 2040 or 2060 should be fine.... uhm.... yeah, I'll stop dreaming now.... 🤣🤣🤣
I've had all those dreams lol, would love an 040 or 060 but it'll probably have to be the 030 for now.
Bridge board would be a nice addition. So many options it's hard to decide.
I would love to build one. However, I can not do SMD, and need to buy one half made. But yeah. Would go nice in my collection, as I have build my own C64 in ATX form factor.
Smd looks hard and in fact a couple of years ago I would have agreed with you but honestly it's not that bad. I'd now say it's quicker than through hole. Just get good flux and solder and you'll be fine.

Yup. ATX64 is a thing. I have done one and it is on my channel. Please do one, as we are only 3 on UA-cam that have done such a thing. Quite rare like your ATX A2K.

Glenn, there is a new Prelude 16 bit clone soundcard available for Zorro 2 on A1K and Amibay as well.

You can get those amiga usb cards and route the ports to the case built in ones.
Can you get a Zorro 2 usb card? I'll have to look into that as it would be very useful.

I wonder if the name of the floppy activity signal in the A2K schematics might be a typo - in the A500 schematics I read the name as "MTR ON", which sounds quite reasonable. "MTR OD" doesn't make much sense to me.
This is really nice! I'd like to do this myself. It was really exciting to see the Zorro slots working at first try, all 5 of them! I didn't comment anything on the first part, I know...
I've asked for this but an A3000 remake in ATX form factor, I'd like that better than the A2000, as much as I do love the A2000... but for AGA, I already have my A1200 towerized with a Mediator PCI busboard, which is awesome in itself, it's running a Blizzard 1240 accelerator at 40 Mhz. As for the accelerator you wanna make, if I were you, I'd stick with an 030 accelerator, especially when it comes to an A2000. Since the architecture of the A2000 is still 16 bit anyway, I'd guess you'be mostly use if for stuff that works well with an 030? for compatibility reasons, and you can put an 030 at pretty nice speeds anyway. For a faster CPU I'd build an A4000 clone of sorts... but that's just my two cents!

There is the A4000TX project which I'd love to build at some point, an Amiga 4000 in an EATX from. That chipset is very expensive though and I've got a lot of work yet to do to finish this build.
For cpu upgrades I'd love to see the tf2040 get finished although an 030 is probably the sweet spot for a system like this. Pistorm is an option and I am considering it but I'd only be for the CPU as I want to build more cards to fill out the Zorro slots.
@@CRG I had a Blizzard A1230 + FPU all at 50MHz in my A1200 at uni, adding the FPU did make a difference. It was so nice, the stock A4000/030 was nothing compared to my 1200. I wish I'd kept them now.

I did try to 3d print something but it looked awful compared to the rest of it. I've been looking at the checkmate keyboard case so a black one of those might be a little Christmas present to myself 😁
Nice A2000. The keyboard without a case looks like a slim Mac keyboard. Why not leave it as is and just make a base and cover for the LEDs?
Now that's a really good idea. I could easily print something to close in the PCB but leave the rest as is.

Great video! I noticed you never mentioned reflashing the Rev B firmware onto the CPLD once you realised you had a Rev B Bluster instead of Rev C. Did you do that, or didnt need to?
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. No I never reflashed the rev B firmware, its still on rev C and working fine. I will at some point in the future be adding more zorro cards so I'm unsure if it might become an issue at that point. Speaking to LIV2 about this back at the time he wasn't sure it would work but to date for me anyway its working fine. If you are building one though, probably best to use rev B firmware on a rev B board.

You used the rev c jed file to program the bluster but later show it's a rev b board. Presumably the pinout between the CPLD and the actual pins didn't change between the revs
I don't think the jed files are specific to the revision of the board, rather just an upgrade to the cpld code, or at least that's how I understand it. It's the same cpld on all revision boards just the regulator changed.
Love this Video! I would love to do the same but would love a Coloured PCB like Red or Blue tbh. Also, what do you do if you don't have a spare Amiga 500 keyboard? Can you use a PS/2 Keyboard? -Mark.

Our boards were ordered green as that was the only option when getting JLC to part assemble it for us. Fitting everything ourselves just seemed like too much work 😂
If you don't have a spare 500 keyboard then yes there are adapters out there to use a ps2 keyboard.
@@CRG in my A1200 tower, I use one of those A1200 keyboard to DIN converters, and then over to PS2 style. it works ok, but fails to register 2 key presses at one time. I think using an actual A500/2000 keyboard really is the best solution, if you can, or hope that you can find an adapter that really works flawlessly.

Great build you have done there.
It is very tempting but I've already got 2 030 Amigas and I'm not sure I really need another. This machine now has a pistorm at its heart but ultimately it's waiting for the TF2040.
I have 040 in a 2000 and that is quite interesting.
I always liked the A2630 as you could set a jumper which allowed for selecting the 68000 or 030 via mouse pointer menu on startup.
You can also have FPU and massive amount if RAM via the back pin header with an Icomp memory upgrade kit.
Good build job but really don't understand in case choice, it's an amiga and does not belong in that type of case, I would of opted for a case with external bays for floppy drives + gotek + zip drives and cd drive!
I always wanted a new case for it and finding one of those with drive bays and was still affordable was almost impossible. I appreciate the case I've chosen isn't for everyone but I'm happy with it. Yes I'm limited to goteks only but I hope to add network abilities to be able to transfer data that way.
I am about to start building one of these machines. How did you solve making the A500 keyboard into a nice external keyboard? I would like to somehow make it into a rather slim keyboard case, and it would be really useful with your feedback. Thank you.
I just 3d printed the stands and covers for the other metal bits and circuit board of the 500 keyboard. The only proper solution for it that I know of is the checkmate keyboard case, but it was too expensive for me and does look a little industrial.

I would say that the reset keys are more important.
That looks amazing! I was wondering what you would do for a floppy drive with that case, until you said "Gotek." I absolutely love the way you integrated that in there.
To your question of what we would have done differently, Similar to a comment I made on your last video, the only thing I would have done is to use a USB keyboard, the same way GadgetUK164 did, here (link with a timestamp added) ua-cam.com/video/X7wNfDoZChI/v-deo.html
That will be the solution I'm planning to use for my actual Amiga 2000, which is missing its keyboard, and a correct Amiga keyboard is absolutely cost-prohibitive.
But I do love this entire project, here!

I had forgotten about that adapter board and it might be an option for the future. I'm working on something to make the A500 keyboard look a bit better so will post a quick update (probably just a community post picture) once I get that done.

I never liked to listen to Amiga audio in headphones since you usually only get one channel with drums in one ear (and so on), unless you go mono of course 🙂.
Yeah I'll have to get or make some sort of cross over to mix the left and right channels.
I _think_ an 8ohm resistor betweennleft and right channel will do the mono trick?
On AGA you could just pull out one of the audio plugs t5hen all 4 channels.play on the other

All that work for such an awful case. That is way too bulky and doesn't really match imo. Should have 3D printed a case for this, or went for a beige tower or something similar.
Each to their own. I love it as it is but I will admit I seen this same board at Kickstart in a custom beige tower painted to match the commodore boxes and it looked amazing.
@@CRG sorry to be hard on this though. It is your build after all. I only mention that cause I plan on potentially building a Mister clone wedge computer and have seen so many awesome Amiga replica cases. Wouldn't even mention it though if it weren't for that.
Either way it's not like you can't recase it later. However because of how that's stacked, probably the only thing to do is with a huge tower anyway so it's not too far off.
The skill required for this is commendable though. Way beyond my skill limit.
It just has this weird Zoomer gamer RGB vibe when it has glorious old school hardware. I would have even put it in a Checkmate case or something.
So basically you bought the wrong PC Case, the DeepCool E-SHIELD (€62 on Blamazon "remove Bl") has all you want,
and a 5.25" front bay, were you can buy a cheap 3.5" to 5.25" Front Bay Adapter for, and you can always put 3 RGB fans
in them, with controller.
The Amiga 2000 EATX MB is fantastic, your soldering and more is good very good.

It might not be to everyone's taste but I love the case as it is. I purposely went for one without drive bays as I wanted to mimic the look of a modern system. Yes that introduced limitations but I think I've demonstrated how I worked around them with the gotek.
@@CRG OK, yeah i would have wanted a real floppy drive in it also, and if it could a CD drive, but that's me.
