Very cool tool. I just wish the distance between the wire grippers and the pivot pin was farther apart so that you didn't have to remove your pliers when making the final twist. Your device looks pretty safe also. I worked for a 90yo rancher in college who was missing an eye from over stretched wire that broke and flew back at him. He would joke that the made it through Germany and Korea with just a few cuts and a little frostbite only to lose an eye to barbed wire on a ranch he did own.

Former professional farm and ranch fence builder here and yes, a winch works well but for speed and working alone, this is hard to beat. I've used them all and for simply tightening a strand, this does the job quick and easy.
@Ben David I was just curious. That is about 4 US miles. I have built and maintained hundreds of miles of fencing and dozens of corrals all over the states of Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. 2,000 lb (907k) Brangus bulls will demonstrate saggy lines for you!
It seems like a lot of extra work. I like someones reply to just use a tire iron to put a twist in the wire. At very least to speed things up, use the Texas fence stretcher along with twisting the existing wire, but to splice a separate wire in there for every slack point is just making a quick job take a long time.
@@TheHyde8875 shows more why American farmers can't compete on the world's market with their out dated farming. If it was not for government hand outs to farmers . USA wouldn't have a cow
Rather than diddling around trying to bridge it with a new piece of wire, why not just put a bar through the loop and twist it until the slack is taken out? You can even leave the bar in for further tensioning in the future.
@@KJ-hl1nt It wouldn't be in any danger of breaking unless you keep working the wire. The wire is very often twisted anyway when fastened onto thin steel posts, it's not usually a problem if it's done while the the wire is not under tension, which it wouldn't be if you're using the tool in the video.
@@Altair885 I ranch for a living. Run 2200 head of cattle. twisting the wire like that is a quick fix. it wont last long and you'll have a hole in the fence. I promise you

Why? So when the wire breaks it breaks the clips off or pulls staples out on the 2 post on either side of the break and ends up in a coiled kinked mess that compromises the integrity of the wire at every kink? Not to mention now you have a 30ft hole in the fence when it breaks from being too taught instead of a 10ft hole. Overly tight barbwire puts unnecessary stress on corner posts, line posts, gate posts, H braces, crows feet, and T-post. It will also pull posts out of the ground in low spots further compromising the rest of that line of fence. The "piano tight" method might have been necessary in the 60's when wire was mostly steel and would sag and stretch after the first good rain. Texas A&M actually did a study on a Brahman ranch just north of Fairfield TX. They fenced 2 pastures on either side of the main entrance road. Both fences were identical except that one had T-posts every 10ft and the wire was stretched as tight as possible with a come-a-long. The other had posts every 20ft and the wire was stretched by hand. Not one bull broke through the "slack" fence even after they broke through the "piano tight" fence. The slack fence would bend and stretch and not break, whereas the tight fence broke like an overstretched rubber band.

Ok now that is a nice tool. Way better than just twisting the wire tight with linesman pliers. I would use that if i still did that kind of stuff.
I been building fencing all my life and never seen one of these, pretty nice thou.

Great tool for small jobs. Have a search for the Hays wire strainer from New Zealand
I don't know why UA-cam suggested this to me, but I'm not upset.

When you kink the wire when twisting it will weaken and break.
