OH MY GOSH THE FIRST ONE IS MY DAD!!!!! I can tell you that they’re ALWAYS that generous with their food, camera or not. He refuses to let people leave with a bad experience. Definitely stop by Eastway Gourmet for good food and nice laughs!!! *he has the best jokes :)*
No way! My parents are going to NYC this December, and we're hoping to join - breakfast sammiches are one of my fav things, and his look amazing! This was my recommendation to them after watching the video, I hope we get to try it :)
Hey Jon, just wanted to say we spent 2 beautiful weeks in NYC in August literally BASED on your video recommendations. Our 2 kids kept looking for you at every spot, unfortunately we didn’t see you :-) I not only wanted to thank you for your precious content, I also wanted to let you know: We still watch your videos as you can see and miss NYC so much!
@@darealemveepeeI’m ngl as a bk native this guy gives good recommendations for restaurants but he’s even better for tourists bc his videos feed into what tourists want to visualize the city as before coming, and the vids make tourists feel like they’re more in the loop when us natives know where to really go Also Only evil people are gonna tell tourists to go to E NY or tremont ave for fun 😂 even the nice parts of other boroughs people don’t care enough to go to
The default standard for a New York breakfast. You can get it practically anywhere, and it's hard to mess up unless the roll is stale. Pair this with the classic Arizona iced tea, and that's your classic NYC breakfast. 💯
Hey thanks for covering East Way! Live 1/2 a block away and can assure that their sandwiches are ALWAYS this big and delicious, plus the entire staff are some of the nicest people around. All praise to East Way!
I love when i moved back, i got a bacon egga n' cheese as a first. Part of my childhood and just a memory bomb. Personally, just light black pepper is fine for me since the ketchup can make it too soggy, especially if they make it with some good butter on the roll
Fun fact. Company producing Arizona Iced tea started in Brooklyn in 1971 and started making teas after Snapple in 1992. And 92 when got to US and was drinking lot of Arizona in 90s :)
Great video idea! I got out of the R rain and looked across the platform at the open train and saw you!!! In a suit formal outfit. I couldn't believe it!! And another day once I saw Adriana by my preschool where I work!!! I said hi, she was super nice! God bless you both in everything you do!
John thanks for making this video, with so much turmoil In the world lately It's nice to escape from this even If it's only for a few minutes! Shout out to Ming & Ben !
Hey Jon! I love when you have Ming and Ben on with you. Bacon, egg, and cheese on a sesame bagel is my favorite, too. I don't use ketchup but if they accidentally added it, I would eat it. My local bagel shop here on Long Island (Avenue Bagel) is a small spot that does everything right. Occasionally, I add home fries to the mix. That's a sandwich that will hold you for hours. It's sad to see so many diners disappearing. A good diner is more than food, it's part of your social life. I love the idea of fusion...Asian or other ethnicities putting their take on classics and new will pump new life into the experience.
$17 for a BEC is wild. Only ocky way can justify that price because you pay for the entertainment value as well and general ock is a celebrity at this point so it’s well worth it.
Living in New York my whole life, I never really thought about bacon egg and cheese being a local thing. I guess I shouldn't take that and the best pizza and bagels for granted. SPK all day, by the way, you can't have it any other way.
There is a nice charm of walking into a place and getting a bite. Outside of NYC, in most places in America, most Americans have to get in a car and drive to a generic chain food place for an experience that lacks charm
@@richardkim9952I don’t relate to that. I’m not from NY and have lived all over the USA and every single place I’ve lived a Bacon Egg and Cheese was extremely popular and able to be purchased at any bagel shop or deli
This is a big controversy amongst my family and friends…I’m of the opinion that you can put whatever you like on your BEC but some say anything else besides butter is blasphemous. I get bored having it the same way all the time…some times I like ketchup, sometimes mayo…however you like it that’s what it is. 80% of the time I’m getting a BEC toasted, pepper, butter! 🤤 please don’t burn my eggs though! Not only are you keeping ketchup far away from my baconeggandcheesesaltpeppa but if you accidentally put it on there I'm handing that whole thing back because you can wipe it off all you want but ketchup is still the only thing you're gonna taste when you bite into it.
John, you crack me up mate! The comment re "would you put ketchup on a bacon egg and cheese?" and then you said "I say, yes, as long as it's on a roll"! So, if it was in Texas toast, no ketchup? Or a tortilla? lol. I love your work man
a classic NYC BEC is def something I wanna try. We've got a version in Toronto using peameal (Canadian back bacon) on a Kaiser roll and it's sometimes considered the city's unofficial signature food alongside Caribbean patties
A BEC isn’t that difficult to replicate at home. The charm of a BEC is physically walking in a busy crowded city environment and getting it. Especially if you’re working or a college student in NYU because it’s like a mini oasis during a stressful week
If Ben works for the mta railroad then I say big respect to him . I work for the railways in England , it’s a hard job and sometimes you need a good sandwich at two in the morning.
If there’s 2 breakfast food that us NYers do right, and dare I say it…..better than any place in America, it’s the baconeggandcheese and the bagel with cream cheese. Now I personally hate all condiments unless it’s soy sauce, lemon pepper sauce, and garlic Parmesan sauce (I’m a picky eater) with a baconeggandcheese I get mine with more eggs (egg whites, because I don’t like egg yolks), salt&pepper, and then some everything but the bagel seasoning. For a bagel with cream cheese, it’s gotta be evenly spread out and I usually get an everything bagel.
The best bacon egg and cheese sandwich I've had recently is at a new place called Afternoon on Broadway and 107th street (across the street from Absolute Bagels). It's a Korean-style egg sandwich on toasted milk bread. The eggs are insane, I don't know how they get them to be so fluffy!

I also did some things on my own like eat at Buvette and Vinegar Hill House. Thanks so much for your videos. The next time I'm in New York I'll definitely be checking out jackson heights, harlem, flushing, queens, and way more based on your videos.
New York is actually a fun city. For whatever reason you get people posting that the city is terrible and they can’t wait to go home when nothing bad happens to them
Quintessential experience is from a bodega. It has four ingredients 1. An egg over medium/hard NEVER SCRAMBLED!!! 2. bacon 3. American cheese 4. a hard roll (only available in the greater NYC area) Bagels, other rolls, nope. Salt, pepper, slight stripe of ketchup are the only condiments.
The difference between a deli and a bodega is that the bodega is ran by Dominicans, use to be Puerto Ricans mostly. We call all Arabic ran stores “the a-rabs” or “the Ocs”(ox)
Another good spot for the BEC is Best Bagel & Coffee. Even with it's touristy location, it's outstanding though yes the bagels are better at Tompkins (I generally get it on a roll at Best.)
When I want to fill up for the morning I’ll get that with an everything bagel from the local shop. Now that you’ve done NYC. Come across the river to NJ and have the staple Taylor Ham/Pork Roll Egg and Cheese. Gotta do it right.
The BEC is one of the best things about NYC (along with Halal food carts), but first of all, you DO need ketchup and hot sauce. That’s not even a question. Second, Arizona Ice Tea is not on point (especially for breakfast)-you need a Manhattan Special Espresso Soda (it’s gonna foam over when you open it). Tourists- two tips: You can get sweet or savory Chinese breakfast in any one of our Chinatowns and if you want a real New York treat, go to Defontes Sandwich Shop on Columbia Street in Red Hook, Brooklyn and get a potato, egg, and cheese with or without gravy (tomato sauce).
Fantastic Jon….my fave would be the first one, I like the soft milk bun. They all looked scrumptious though and I’d be guilty of eating one of those tasty morsels on the way to work. I’m a ketchup on the bun as well…❤❤❤
Hot take - but I've always gotten mine with a slice of tomato rather than ketchup - adds similar kick of acidity & umami but less sweet, and I like the contrast as it adds a little more crunch & coolness rather than ketchup which can be goopy and sometimes overly sweet and overpowering. For me a bodega BEC always wins - that's what it's all about!
@@ramencurry6672 haha fair. I guess it depends who you talk to, the notion of customizing food to your liking even slightly from the norm is often seen as heresy for whatever reason 🤷♂

Ketchup? That’s a personal choice. Hot sauce? Right on!
Love this video, look that type of comfort food.
Fantastic Jon….my fave would be the first one, I like the soft milk bun. They all looked scrumptious though and I’d be guilty of eating one of those tasty morsels on the way to work. I’m a ketchup on the bun as well…❤❤❤
Ketchup salt and pepper yum!
You gotta get a bacon&egg&cheese with chipotle sauce or chipotle mayo, onions and avocado.
Well done video my friend
Corner store food is so good frfr 😁🔥
Hot take - but I've always gotten mine with a slice of tomato rather than ketchup - adds similar kick of acidity & umami but less sweet, and I like the contrast as it adds a little more crunch & coolness rather than ketchup which can be goopy and sometimes overly sweet and overpowering.
For me a bodega BEC always wins - that's what it's all about!
That’s not a hot take. A hot take is something terrible like pouring soy sauce on the rice at a Chinese restaurant
@@ramencurry6672 haha fair. I guess it depends who you talk to, the notion of customizing food to your liking even slightly from the norm is often seen as heresy for whatever reason 🤷♂
Tomatoes used are usually bad conventional ones so I rarely get tomatoes unless summer & in season..
Yes pls, ketcup in a toasted roll
