  • @CFProton

    I bet the diagnosis of the key needing to be replaced didn't come from the key itself but rather your experience with the mower kicking back when you tried to start it and that led to the diagnosis of the key having a visually minor bend to it. I think if you were a backyard mechanic trying to fix that mower you wouldn't be able to connect the look of the key to the running condition of the engine. great video leading the viewers form the kickback and then finding the reason for it. You are a great small engine "teacher" You would have been great in "shop class". :-)

    Hey Don, I don't know if you read comments on old videos, but a big thanks from me on this one. When I saw that the key on my B&S mower engine was sheared, I remembered your tip of threading the holes in the flywheel so you could use a puller to get it off. Luckily the flywheel on my motor only had two holes, so it was easy to jury-rig a puller from a steel bar.

    I have used a large screw driver to apply a little bit of leverage under the flywheel, and in my case i used a copper hammer, it came loose on the second impact.

    Thanks mate. Spot on. Exactly the problem with my B&S mower. Used your tips to pull it apart. Flywheel key was completely sheared off and the shaft and flywheel were 35 degrees out of alignment. No wonder it wouldn't start! Just need to pop in a new alignment key and put it back together now. You're a legend!

    Great video. That's one thing I haven't checked so will tomorrow. Your very thorough so thank you. I hope I don't have to do that but I'm not sure what else I can do. It's a toro recycler of let with auto choke and the mower is not even trying to start yet after cleaning the carb and checking for spark. It all seems okay. The mower doesn't look very old and is self propelled. It would be nice to get it going.

    Take note, I thought I had the same problem then discovered the flywheel nut was torqued so lightly it could be almost loosen by fingers. Initial flywheel key didn't seem out of place or damaged so I tightened the flywheel nut to around 50 pounds. That did the trick.

  • @GeorgeHildebrand
    @GeorgeHildebrand Рік тому

    Great video, but. In my case it wasn't the key, but rather loose valves. Adjusting that valves fixed the problem. And it was an arm breaker not just a little kickback. Thank for that video though.

    many times because of the steel key , the aluminum flywheel will crack at the key way,, B&S has an aluminum key so the flywheels are seldom if ever damaged, and yes, the crankshaft might be bent if someone hit something.

    • @ericbrodie1818
      @ericbrodie1818 4 роки тому +2

      Yes, that's exactly right. If the timing is severely off, the spark plug might fire and force the cylinder slightly backwards, but with a great amount of force. This is what causes the starter cord to be jerked out of your hand. Be careful! This could throw out your shoulder, elbow, or back if you don't let go of the handle.

    Someone had an argument that there was no such thing as common sense as not everyone thinks the same.
    I use a torque wrench on critical components particularly on a car,such as once I lost a brake caliper mounting bolt & a transmission rear crossmember mounting bolt so I now make sure the threads are clean, use Loctite if applicable then torque to specifications.
    Things such as cylinder head bolts on any engine definitely yes,spark plugs not necessarily.
    Definitely conrod & main bearing cap nuts or bolts & make sure they are oiled up because they are almost constantly bathed in oil.
    When I did a small automotive course my teacher told us that,he was servicing his wifes car & took to the subframe with a torque wrench.

      I recently sold a Evinrude 6 hp outboard on craigslist and I told the guy that bought it you might want to get a couple extra shear pins for the prop, he said "oh" I just use old drill bit's for that and I replied you are defeating the purpose if you hit a stump or whatever that oem shear pin is designed to break instead of tearing up your lower unit gears.
