I just wanted to drop a line to let you know how much I enjoy your vlog and Q&A videos. I enjoy all of the other ones too, but these are my favorites. 😊 I especially appreciate that there are no advertisements during the videos, which allows me to listen during my commute. I do support you on Patreon, and appreciate all you do! Thanks!
Thank you for your support, and listening. I hate mid-roll adverts, even though most other YT channels have them all the way through now.
it was great seeing you actually playing games at GridCon - more of that next year!
I was taught Ark Nova with Marine and I'm missing it on BGA, totally agree with the luck factor.
Next year, my clone will run GridCon and I will play games 24x7
Great VLOG as usual, many thanks. Watched the rap video, even though I don't like rap, and I totally agree with Paul, it's quite hilarious. Well worth a look!
Happy to become a member! Over the last year+ I've come back to your channel more than anyone else's so its only more than reasonable that I help fund that.
Thanks!
Your game VLOGS of the month are the best !!!
too kind
Love Ark Nova and looking forward to try the expansion. And I do agree about the randomness.
From the long Essen list of cool new games I haven't had a chance to try I think Evacuation and Kutna Hora are on the top of that list.
I have also never played Through the Ages, so that is on the to-do list.
Paul, thanks for your Update and VLOG. I really appreciate the effort you put into creating your VLOG. It's definitely a real pleasure to listen to it....every month. Happy to hear your impressions when playing Evacuation. Further: I am absolutely with you when you talk about Arc Nova. It's a great game, but it is definitely overrated, and you need at least some luck getting the right cars. All the best from Berlin, Germany Frank
Great monthly video Paul! Kutna Hora and Evacuation are somewhere in transit, and Marine Worlds is sitting on the shelf waiting for a first playthrough. Based on your info (and the fact I needed another game for a Gamenerdz hold release 🙂) added World Wonders to the cart!
Let me know how you get on with those games when they arrive.
@@GamingRulesVideos Just received Kutna Hora and hoping to get to the table soon. Evacuation (and Shipyard 2ed) are still in transit to the US - have both pre-ordered so maybe get in January
Loving Ark Nova on BGA. I did ask for it for Christmas so hopefully it will end up under the tree! Haven't played with the expansion yet. Glad to hear it is good. :) Pirates of Maracaibo is also definitely on the radar as I love the original game.
Great vid Paul.
We played World Wonders at Gridcon and weren't blown away by it ..maybe I played it wrong...
Have the White Castle which is excellent....
I bought Anno 1800 in the bring and buy after seeing you teaching and playing it....
You can't be right about everything :)
Playing with me also adds +50% enjoyment.
Baycon *used* to have a games library. It travelled around in a van, and took up pretty much all of the space along one wall.
I don't think anyone missed it when it stopped attending.
I remember the library. I thought it was just made up of people's games they brought and put on the tables. But I agree, no need for it now.
Even before I start watching the video I have to mention the Jabba the Hutt on a pile of Jaffa cakes! Awesome!
It's Jaffa the Hutt :)
We taught THE WHITE CASTLE to KR and his son on the Saturday. I was a little concerned about it being too much for him but he was amazing. He took everything in that I explained and applied it well to the playthrough. It was a real pleasure playing with them both.
Yeah I met him and his son really love their gaming !!
Catching up on old content. Yes, Paul. It was indeed 3d printed.
I love Ark Nova on BGA and yes, it is the theme for me. I am not a very good player there for that reason. I don't like racing through and gaining as many points as possible. I actually like building a great zoo, with some valuable conservation projects on the side. It frustrates me when the very good players race through the game, sending almost all of their animals back to the wild and nearly doubling my score, and ending the game before I really get started. I can and have done that a few times, too, but it isn't my favorite way to play. So, my ELO score hovers between 100 and around 130 max.The best games I have there are with my sister, who is about the same ability and interest level as I am. I am hesitant about the expansion, as AN is already about at the limit of our ability levels.
For your ATO tutorial videos, were you provided the updated rulebooks? I understand there is a lot of information that is either missing or contradictory in the rule books that I hope they are cleaning up for the next release.
The new rulebooks they are working on are still WIP. But I have a direct line to them for rules queries (of which there have been a lot)
I agree that Evacuation isn't super repayable, but it's got enough replayability in the advance mode if you have a large collection (as I imagine you do).
On Ark Nova I disagree that it's a great game, after the expansion it's good but not great.
I disagree about polyomino not being thematic. Patchwork, Barenpark, Cottage Garden, Planet Unknown, Isle of Cats are all thematic. Really I struggle to think of one that isn’t thematic. But World Wonders is still really fun. For me what makes it unique are the placement rules. Buildings have to be same color or next to a sidewalk. And sidewalks have to be next to sidewalks (I just want to dump them into the empty one spaces but you can’t unless you plan well). Just my worthless thoughts. Good video
I've only played some of them. I didn't find the placement in Isle of Cats that thematic though, but I've only played once. Glad we agree on World Wonders though :)
Agree with marine worlds for first timers. I don't play ark nova much because i prefer terraforming mars (even though its worse), and I think underwater cities is quite a bit better than them both. So i usually play U.C. instead. I'd rather not have to keep w/ and w/o expansion rules for ark nova in my head, and like you said the additional rules for the fish cards doesnt add much. I would exclude the new action cards and use the original for a first play though
I prefer TfM to Ark Nova, but I know I'm in the minority :)
Do you got deadpool marvel champions. Could use some how to play with him 😊
Would you consider reviewing Indonesia? It's been reprinted in 2024 so it would be great to have more reviews of it
I don’t own it. I did play it once when the game first came out, but not since.
Just to note with Aeon Trespass (which I'm sure you've already read but hey), Cycle 2 is much, MUCH better than 1. Both in terms of story (especially level of personal engagement) and fun battles even more so. So if you plan on a break, at least play the first story/battle aka intro to Cycle 2 (although that may pull you into playing the whole thing :D).
People keep telling me that. But people tell me the complexity ramps up too, which is a concern.
Not in terms of rules at least IMO. There are more interesting decisions to be made both on the map exploration (as in you actually need to think about where to go etc) and in particular in the boss battles. There are a few new tokens and gear abilities but they're pretty similar to C1. I suppose it could be argued the combats take longer just due to thinking up the best play, which could be an issue since it's not exactly a short session game to begin with. @@GamingRulesVideos
I love it when Paul says Ark Nova is overrated. 100% agree. It's not a bad game and I can see where the appeal is. It's just that there are so many better euros out there. So my guess it's the theme.
I'm just fed up of all the influencers jumping up and down saying "#1 game, best game ever". Which they seems to do for every other game :)
Plus, it is only about 15% similar to TfM, so another thing that annoyed me was all the people claiming "This replaces TfM for me"
@@GamingRulesVideos please continue to speak your mind on your videos. I really the valuable insight.
Luke gave evacuation a 5/10. It’s a pure solo game with zero interaction, very limited replay ability. That alone cancelled this game for me. It’s funny that he hated the power cards and refused to play with them. Was hoping this would be as good or close to underwater cities, but not even close. Suchy unfortunately, seems to be more miss than hit. Didn’t like (and sold) pulsar, craga, (couldn’t even remember its proper name!) shipyard, prodigals club, but have yet to play my $10 copy of Messina. I am not expecting much after this. While it’s disappointing to look forward to a game and then see it fall off a cliff, I have to be happy with the money saved.
I decided not to buy kutna hora or white castle either. My one new purchase was ‘the hunt’ guess what! It actually has interaction!
Pirates of maricaibo was on my list but got removed for its insane pricing of $80 in Canada. This is a small box game. No one ever talks about the pricing on games. It’s much of the reason I don’t buy anymore.
With all due respect, Luke often talks complete nonsense. Evaction is not the best game ever, but a lot of what Luke said is factually incorrect. Opinion is one thing, but saying stuff that simply is not true is another :)
@@GamingRulesVideoslol! It all seemed accurate to me. Lack of interaction, lack of theme, quite a few other points. What would you say was factually incorrect?
@@shatnershairpiece Suchy is not known for thematic games. In this one, there is some - but not much. Way more than Pulsar 2849 (which Luke enjoys). There is also some player interaction but not much. Without going into too many details, there was a 1 hour conversation on my Slack channel about it last night where I asked Luke for some specific examples of things that he had an issue with. It was proved to him that some of the things he said were incorrect (lack of indication about steel cost was one - which is printed on the icon and is clear - but Luke said the graphic design was bad and there was NO indication of the cost).
Also, his title was very clickbaity and shows a complete lack of respect and understanding for the work that went into designing the game and exactly WHY there are different modes of play. Then again, as we all know - negativity gets more views and enagagement.
I'm all for fair and balanced reviews, but I don't like sweeping statements based purely on subjective opinions that are put out without taking the time to look into it more. I mean, come on.. the game has two different modes of play - which is a GOOD thing. Both work well. And the designer wrote a piece on BGG saying why it has two modes.
And yet, a clickbait title of "A game that has no identity...." Just ridicuous.
I'm not defending the game, because I have some of my own issues with it, so I'm not a fanboy defending the game.
He doesn’t exactly get a lot of views for negativity. No more than you do on a positive video. If negative click bait was the answer to views, all the game channels would be doing it. Very few reviewers are honest anymore in the industry as they fear losing out on subs, views, freebies, sponsors, etc, and are SCARED of blowback in comments. I blame rhado for his stomach churning use of ‘Phenomenal!” in every video as one of the reasons the UA-cam board game review industry is so one sided and many viewers (like me) desperately seek realistic opinions not mired in fanboyism or sponsor bias. This is why I signed up for Luke’s channel, (and my sub choices are extremely limited for game channels) because he has nothing to lose by being honest. It’s extremely refreshing and rare. And there is a lot of agreement with his review in the comments. I signed up for your channel because of the quality of tutorials and play throughs and your high quality speaking voice. (Very pleasant) take that as a compliment from a 50 year musician with extremely good ears. Most people are NOT pleasant to listen to. (Rhado would be my equivalent to fingernails on a blackboard)
Also, Luke shows respect where it counts most: for his audience and their wallets. The lack of indication of steel cost would be the most minor point of his critique. I didn’t even register this one. There were at least 5 major points of contention that I did notice.
@@shatnershairpieceAnd I really appreciate you as a viewer. Thanks for leaving me comments. I always enjoy reading them.
When I review games in these VLOGs and at the end of videos, I always try to be fair. Even for a game I enjoy (Evacutation), I feel what I said in this video was balanced.
And I'm not saying everything Luke said was wrong. He was correct on a number of things. It's just the overexaggeration and clickbait titles and thumbnails that is over the top.
I'm just glad I don't do actual review videos any more.
Discord server?
I do have a Discord server, but it isn’t an “active” one as such. There is no conversation on there, but instead just a series of rooms that my supporters can use when they meet up online to play games.
My Patreon community use Slack rather than Discord.
ArkNova, Endless Winter, Everdell.. all the same, overated piece of paper. I pity people. Oversleep guaranteed.
