      I also remember being in
      Mick Heraghty's bar in Glasgow after an Ireland game when they beat Italy.
      It was like being at Sunday night devotions, full repertoire of hymns, Sweet Heart of Jesus, Faith of our Fathers, Hail Glorious St Patrick etc etc.
      Now that's when you know you're proud of your Irish Catholic Heritage.
      Viva la Papa.

    My Mam told me this was like the national anthem for Catholics in Manchester. Whereas in the Con clubs they'd sing God save the Queen at the end of the night, in the Catholic clubs they'd sing Faith of Our Fathers. Big Irish Catholic population here.

      Down in Essex in the 60s the Catholic parish club dance nights used to finish with the soldiers song as most of the parishioners were irish and the band was a showband. One English member complained so from then onwards it was faith of our fathers. Memories just flooded back. ❤💚

    My favourite hymn if all time. I remember Sunday Mass, mam , dad, myself and three siblings, Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Broomhill, Glasgow. Fr Conlan, marching up the isle, belting out this hymn for all his worth. That left an indelible mark upon me. 50 years later I still remember vividly.

    Faith of our Fathers is an English Catholic hymn, written in 1849 by Frederick William Faber in memory of the Catholic martyrs from the time of the establishment of the Church of England by Henry VIII. Faber wrote two versions of the hymn: with seven stanzas for Ireland and with four for England.

    the hairs on the back of my neck will stand to attention whenever again I hear this wonderful song. I remember as a child of the 1950s
    hearing the Croke Park crowd belting out this song (via steam radio) on All Ireland Final day. My beloved (late ) old Da used to stand to attention in the middle of the kitchen, and heartily sing along (as did most of our neighbours) I also fondly remember the late great Micheal O' Hehir's opening words on every one of his broadcasts (in Gaelic) "Hello, and welcome to all of our Irish friends everywhere" (I think)
    I have searched in vain for a recording of the Croke Park crowd (accompanied by the Artane boys band) singing 'faith of our fathers' can anyone help?

      To be fair to the Scottish Protestants, they were far less persecuting of Catholics than in England. Maybe 2 priests were executed, compared to countless in England and Ireland.

    • @Dunsapie
      @Dunsapie 3 роки тому +1

      @@mango2005 Scots Catholics suffered much.
      In a lonely Highland valley hidden far away from view,
      Lies one of Scotland’s Mass Stones, known only to a few.
      ‘Twas there our forebears gathered in the shadow of the Ben
      To kneel in humble worship at the Mass Stone in the glen.
      Our priests like wolves were hunted down, dear God was surely bad,
      That from the right to worship Thee, Thy children were debarred.
      And yet, they bravely bore their cross, those simple Scottish men,
      Were proud to share Thy Calvary at the Mass Stone in the glen.
      No more upon the hilltop the sentinel keeps guard,
      The heather priests, those holy souls, have gone to their reward.
      And we who worship God in peace can bless those gallant men,
      who kept the faith for Scotland at the Mass Stone in the glen.
      God bless the glens of Scotland, every rock and mountain pass.
      ‘Twas those same glens that under God preserved for us the Mass.
      And if the day should come again our faith will call for men,
      She will not find them wanting at the Mass Stone in the glen.

    aith of our fathers, living still,
    In spite of dungeon, fire, and sword;
    Oh, how our hearts beat high with joy
    Whene’er we hear that glorious Word!Refrain:
    Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
    We will be true to thee till death.Our fathers, chained in prisons dark,
    Were still in heart and conscience free;
    How sweet would be their children’s fate,
    If they, like them, could die for thee!Faith of our fathers, we will strive
    To win all nations unto thee;
    And through the truth that comes from God,
    We all shall then be truly free.Faith of our fathers, we will love
    Both friend and foe in all our strife;
    And preach thee, too, as love knows how
    By kindly words and virtuous life.

    Anyone who doubts the faithfulness of the Irish Catholics can learn much from the words of this song. Our ancestors were punished, exiled, tortured and killed for their faith. They never gave it up. My Grandparents left Ireland when newlyweds to avoid financial persecution as my Grandpa wanted to provide for his family well. Within 5 years he was a self made man on the Brooklyn waterfront and not persecuted for his Faith. The perseuction has started here in the USA..with radical secularists.

I'm glad the old attitudes have gone here. It is interesting that our fiery tune is so different from the gentle one sung by americans. “What a shame we have all these different religions” yep but you go on to say “when we worship the same God”
      If you call yourself a Christian I’m becoming an atheist when human sacrifice are in many religions, when in some cults like Islam, their god encourages domestic violence and trains their followers to kill people who leave their religion. Then last but not least when we see direct defiance of the Bible when people don’t follow the pope “Peter you are the rock on which I build my church, whatever you bind on earth you bind in heaven” So no we don’t worship the same god as Muslims do, the same god as Norse legends and we stick by our god rather than defy him for an easy divorce.

I saw Frank in Concert in Fort Worth, in what I believe was his last (or one of his very last) Concerts he ever performed. It was magic! Wish he had of sung the more popular version of "Faith of our Fathers."

      That is the tune to which it is sung in most of the English speaking world.

    maybe not. What matters is they know what the English are capable of.

    To Michael McDermott, the catholics were pretty good at persecuting themselves. Ask Galileo

      "Galileo... he remained a life-long FAITHFUL Catholic to the end.The Argument was to do with a secular scientific dispute not a faith dispute."
      Whether he remained faithful and the cause of the argument do not change the fact that he was perscuted. His work on a heliocentric solar system was condemned by the Inquisition as violating the Council of Trent and added to the index. He lived under house arrest for the last nine years of his life for being "vehemently suspect of heresy". Sounds pretty much like persecution to me.

    This makes me feel sick. I remember singing this as a five or six year old at the Holy Name School in Great Barr Birmingham during the mid fifties. We were taught by nuns (bitches).
    The Martyrs were stupid, they died for nothing. I'm glad I was able to shed the depressing dogma of Catholisism

      Its sad your choice was made because of bad examples, by the tone of your post its brought you no peace. God is bigger than the people in his church.It,s the gospel and the sacraments that are the church,the rest I take or leave according to the individual,priest,nun or person. It was Jesus,s own friend that sold him out and members of his own Faith that hounded him to his death. Human nature never changes.

      Your name is an attempt of a very powerful demon which doesn’t give you too much credibility when you are calling something evil. Secondly the martyrs did die for nearly nothing in some cases like yours. If people like you are losing their beliefs because of other people, then religion must’ve been obsolete for you anyway.

      @@oisin9533 There is no such thing as a demon or a god and the martyrs died for nothing. The Nuns at my school were cruel bitches, but that was not why I lost my faith. I remember being told about the day Jesus was born and how the whole World rejoiced, I then asked how did we know in England I was slapped across the face or that.
      I still believed, but as an adult, I read the Bible and did some research, there is no evidence for the Jesus as described in Bible, outside of the Bible and the story of the World rejoicing about his birth is tripe.

      @@Behwyelzebub oh sorry I’m late in answering you. Firstly hi,secondly , yeah there are demons and there’s evidence enough of possessions and things. If you need a few links I’ll gladly provide them.
      And it is written that Jesus was a person like, he did walk the earth; its up to you to believe the miracles or not.

    aith of our fathers, living still,
    In spite of dungeon, fire, and sword;
    Oh, how our hearts beat high with joy
    Whene’er we hear that glorious Word!Refrain:
    Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
    We will be true to thee till death.Our fathers, chained in prisons dark,
    Were still in heart and conscience free;
    How sweet would be their children’s fate,
    If they, like them, could die for thee!Faith of our fathers, we will strive
    To win all nations unto thee;
    And through the truth that comes from God,
    We all shall then be truly free.Faith of our fathers, we will love
    Both friend and foe in all our strife;
    And preach thee, too, as love knows how
    By kindly words and virtuous life.
