    I had a funny experience this week at a steakhouse for a friend's birthday dinner. I ordered 3 baked potatoes, plain with A1 sauce on the side. As soon as our food arrived and we began eating, the conversation shifted to how I was going to get fat if I kept eating this way. I'm the trim and fit guy at the table and have been eating potatoes and beans as my main source of calories for many years. Every other adult at the table was overweight, and they were all telling me what I need to do to not get fat. Cracks me up. The anti-carb brainwashing has been successful. I don't have conversations about my food choices any more. I've done it too many times and it leads nowhere. I just nod and say "oh, I'll have to watch out for that" as I dig into my potatoes.

      Incredible isn't it, the extent to which so many of us people been brainwashed by the media and our own peers. Even as the proof is right in front of them, they can't see it! As Dr John McDougall has said "people love hearing good news about their bad habits." People like him and Dr Popper are trying to put forward the robust science, but people will shut their eyes and hearts to it.
      So many of us are content to hear junk science instead - that'll support what we feel we're entitled to do, rather than what we need to do to get health.
      Healthy pride in your potatoes, Sir/Madam!

      I used to get things like that a lot, but not so much anymore. When they ask me about protein, I sometimes ask them, "What's protein?" No one has answered me yet because most people don't know what they're talking about. The word "evidence" scares most of them away.

    • @bryann9689
      @bryann9689 4 роки тому +16

      Hilarious and sad simultaneously. You obviously care about your health and your trim physique "should" be an indication to those eating with you that you know what you're talking about. But alas, most people are so programmed at a deep level that they couldn't and wouldn't accept the Truth if it smacked them in the face.
      All you can do with people like this is tell them once what you eat and why you do it; and then just be a good living example for them afterward. If what you say and do don't naturally convert them over time, maybe getting a degenerative dis-ease like cancer or heart disease will; and even then I wouldn't hold my breath that meat and dairy consumers would change. Sometimes pain and death are more preferable options than doing a 180 shift in their diet. People are loathe to change long-held beliefs and habits.

I used to drive a truck and even with trying to stop and exercise everyday, and trading snack foods like chips for tuna and green beans, I still gained about 70lbs in the 6 years I was driving. I continued to gain more weight after I quit driving, too, eating regular foods and dieting/exercise. The only diet that works for me is WFPB when I stick to it.

    To the people that have pointed out this interview was conducted in a strange manner - I agree - and thanks for the feedback. As the chairs were next to each other (instead of opposite), we said we would half talk to the camera and half to each other. I am sitting in a dialysis chair right now because of being on a high protein diet..i was told to be on a high protein diet and to cut out carbs even in vegetables! Did not know that that way of eating was damaging my kidneys. So the people promoting that horrible way of getting nutrition in your body are totally wrong! I am on plant based right now since around February this year. I have been told by the dialysis staff to cut out my vegetables and fruit and consume protein. Well I have been eating this way for months and no signs or symptoms of heart issues. I am very upset that we are being given wrong information when it comes to our health! Thank God for you guys spreading the word about the right way for us to eat. The way God designed us to eat..God bless you all

      You sound sincere, and there could be any one of a number of reasons. Anything from something as simple as eating too fast/ not chewing well, to more complex as trying to transition too quickly, food allergies/ sensitivities/ intolerances. I feel for you, and you do sound sincere, but to be able to pinpoint a solution with no details is near impossible. I'm sure, though, that there was at least one reason; and if you could identify it/ them you could thrive on a plant based diet. If you don't want to, that's your choice, but with some analyzing I'm sure it could be done.

    • @SamJones-11
      @SamJones-11 4 роки тому +2

      Shari T after spending thousands of hours researching nutrition (trying to work out what tf was happening to me) I think I might know the reasons. Probably lack of nutrient density, and huge volume of food stressing the digestive system, causing the tiredness. I could never go back there, the most I could do it I had to would be vegetarian with small amounts of fish and organ meats for certain nutrients. I have discovered that my body specifically requires a very large amount of vitamin A

      @@SamJones-11 I'm sorry you had so much trouble! I can only imagine how much time you put in looking for solutions. I certainly don't want to minimize that. From what you said, 1 thing that may have been a factor is trying to get B12 from seaweed [I could have sworn this was in one of your comments, but now I can't find it] If this wasn't you, forgive me! I just saw something recently by Dr. Klaper about how B12 in seaweed is not true B12 but an analog; that may have been a contributor. Even if you feel you couldn't be vegan, keeping animal products and processed food to a minimum is huge. Dr. Greger has said something to the effect of it's not all or nothing; every dietary improvement helps. Hope you're well! : )

    Oh my god, I googled Okinawan diet. If I can quote Wikipedia as a source it clearly states their diet consists of fish and pork. Pork especially is highly prized and the whole animal is eaten from nose to tail. Further, their diet is very low in grains and sugar and the staple of their diet is a certain type of sweet patato that has minimal affect on their blood sugar.
    Their diet is mostly plant food, but that’s not the point. What a bold claim this lady makes.

As the great GT wrote: "The body burns glucose first not because it prefers to, but because it has to". I eats lots of plants but no grains and no sugar. What about how you feel on low carb. No bloating, fixes bowels movement, gives you loads of energy, boost and stabilize your mood, clear your skin from acnes and make you feel fantastic and 10 years younger. Seriously, if this make me get cancer 40 years down the road it's still worth it 100 times over. I felt I went from existing on the verge of depression to living life to the fullest. There might be people that thrive on a vegan diet, but I'm one of them that thrive on low carb. Maybe Asians and the Okinawans have some genes that make them metabolice plants better, but my ancestors have been living in northern Europe for thousands of years, (yes I tracked some of the lines, back more than 1000 years), 10 months a year fruit and fresh vegetables was off limits. You could store some vegetables, but for most of the year the staple would have to be fish and meat, witch you can salt or dry to preserve. If you couldn't process fish and animals products effectively you would die before reaching adulthood.
    I tried eating just plant, it made me hungry ALL the time, no matter how much I ate, I got tired of eating, had no energy and felt lousy all the time. Adding in meat and boom everything got fixed almost over night.
    Everyone needs to find out what is right for them. For me it's low carb, for some others it might be high carb plants.

    A low carb diet definitely works well for me. I have been doing it for about three years now. I probably eat about ten times the vegetables that I used to eat before because it’s what I have to eat besides a bit of meat,eggs and cheese. I lost about twenty pounds and have kept it off easily. 😊 I am my ideal weight at forty-five.

      Chances are you eliminated processed foods, which is uncontroversial among most nutritionists. If most people did that, they'ld lose weight . The issue is that a ketogenic diet doesn't really help lower cardiovascular disease risk if consuming alot of meat, eggs, and cheese is part of the diet.

      @JohnDoe-xk1dv 4 роки тому +1

      Andre, my guess is here you're referring to "all carbs" as being the same thing. Not true - the standard American diet is high in refined carbohydrates, like white table sugar, fructose, and white flour - health menaces. Plus you'll have taken on your share of refined oils and fats in what you used to be eating too, which increases the damage.
      Unrefined carbohydrate majority diets do NOT cause diabetes - as Dr Popper is saying. She;s not referring here to the "standard American diet" as the healing diet, by any means.
      I'm sorry for what happened to you. You've bettered in health most likely for removing refined carbohydrate and lowered probably your overall energy intake and calorie count, which almost certainly has helped. Long term though, your health is going to be at risk, according to the research outcomes. High fat keto - and animal food based high fat keto - is only a temporary remedy - research for all cause mortality suggests that people live a reduced time if this is what they're doing - and in bad long term health.

      I am originally form Haiti, I love carbs, our diet consist of primarily rice and beans, green plantains, lots of legumes and small amounts of meats and fish. Eating his way half of my family developed diabetes the other half thrived. Some people are just not able to process the carbs and fibers as well as others. I would much prefer to be eating rice and vegetables rather than meat and fats not because of some moral objections but because I prefer those foods; but not at the cost of my health.

    • @JohnDoe-xk1dv
      @JohnDoe-xk1dv 4 роки тому +1

      @@amyrtil I appreciate the confusion here - the devil is usually in the detail . If this is FRIED rice and FRIED plaintains, then the oil and/or eggs used to fry it can contribute to fat causing insulin paralysis in the body's cells. Small amounts of meat and fish - how much exactly? How much dairy and eggs? These can add up over time as well to issues as well (especially in people that are vulnerable, which is probably what you saw), and especially in interaction with added oils.
      Plus, how much salt is added? How much are people adding alcohol too to the mix as well? It might be better than some other diets, but it probably is not a diabetes preventing diet and lifestyle then by itself.
      It sounds too from what you said perhaps as well that, in eating the Standard American Diet, you actually might have gone some way away from the traditional Haiti diet in any case. Is that right?
      ua-cam.com/video/ktQzM2IA-qU/v-deo.html
      Professor Neal Barnard - who reverses consistently and long term diabetes by whole food plant based eating's, TED talk. If you've not seen, hope it's useful - believe me, it's worth 15 minutes of your or anybody's time, as it could change the way you look at this long term dramatically.

      @@JohnDoe-xk1dv yes variation and consistency can be the cause of failure or success in any diet. But so are pre-deposition to food and ailments. This is the reason that I don't subscribe to dogmatic generalizations that one approach is best for all people.
      My experience has been to observe 9 of my uncles and aunts on my father side develop and die from diabetic complication while most family members on my mother side live well into their 90's and beyond eating the same Haitian diet. In Haiti fruits and vegetables are in abundance while meat/fish are luxuries, so the bulk of what the population eat (at least 90%) is unprocessed whole foods or plant based.
      Yes when I move to the states I started to eat more processed foods and refined sugars that are prevalent here which exacerbated my predisposition to diabetes, but when I stopped I still failed to improve my health on a doctor prescribed diabetic diet which removed processed sugars and carbs but included grains and fruits closely modeled the standard american diet.
      Not until I removed all sugars, starches, fruits and grains from my diet, eating only animal protein, healthy fats and leafy greens was I able to loose over 100 lbs and reverse my diabetes and all other inflammatory markers. I did this without regulating my salt intake, nor moderating my healthy fats consumption which includes avocados and fried eggs which I eat almost daily.
      Maybe, this will have some ill affects in the long run, that remains to be seen; but what is observable right now is that a high carb diet can be intolerable for some people like myself as evident by the high mortality rate in my own family (which I also could have been a causality of had I not discovered low carb and keto) as well as my 15 years of experience eating high cabs and being on insulin and a host of other medication as a result.
      I don't advocate my point of view from some perceived moral high ground, but from miraculously coming out of a cardiac ward where by all account I should have died, and realizing the common and recommend way of eating was detrimental for me and I had to try something different.
