    It’s so wild to me that not only are all users Home folders shared by default but the whole file system is shared. That feels like a big security risk.

    Do you have any videos on how to configure MACOS with multiple external drives and set for software RAID setup to join up with this video for a Mac mini File Server Setup?

    This is great as I have an old 2013 MBP that I’m replacing with a new MBP. If I can repurpose my old MBP for file storage, that would be awesome. I have a ton of home videos and ripped DVDs that currently stored on an external drive that I manage using the MacBook“TV” app so that I can access the them via Apple TV. I’ll have to play around with this some more. Thanks!

    I personally don't love this idea but i can understand the reasons behind as there are people who are versed in mac os that would rather work off of a mac mini and just add drives to the system and so on.

    Thanks for the video. I assume that you can not hook up a bunch of drives to a Mac Mini, and run those drives in a RAID 5 or RAID 6, correct?

      I am no expert on how security, so I do not know how safe/unsafe it might be, but this is what worked for me:
      1: Make a really strong password to increase safety.
      2. Enable “File sharing” in system preferences and selecting folders to share
      3. Find your Mac´s IP address in network settings in preferences
      4. Setup port forwarding to that IP address. Port 445 worked for me
      5. Find your routers public IP address (google “what’s my ip?”)
      6. On your iPhone, go to Files app, tap “Connect to server” enter your public IP, port, then your Mac´s username and password. It would resemble this:
      12.123.123.123:445
      Please comment back to me if any steps were unclear!

    • @johannespettersen

      This costs a few dollars, but you can have the charger for your MacBook connected to a smart switch, which you can turn off and back on from an app on your phone. I know there is a way to turn a pc on via “Wake on LAN”, I think, but I have not seen anyone do this with a Mac. I am not saying it is impossible, I just have not seen it yet.

    Hi, that was a really great video, cleared a lot of the concepts I was confused with. I just have a basic question which I think I am overthinking it. So the question is, if we are replacing the Mac itself as the server, and we transfer every single thing to the new device with time machine, other than setting up the same permissions again, is there anything else I would have to worry about? I don't want to mess up the data and access to the server of course. Thanks in advance.

    How do I get my Mac mini to have high speeds like this? Does it have to be over ethernet??

    • @johannespettersen
      @johannespettersen Рік тому +1

      It should be over Ethernet. Ethernet is most likely to be the fastest and most reliable solution. If your Mac Mini has an HDD, swapping this out for a SSD will also increase read/write speeds.

    Question on slow speed: My SMB speed is 10MB/s to 20MB/s. Why? My wireless Access point is 1.7GB/s. But SMB speed is so slow. Testing speed between MBP M1 Max and MBA M2 over fast wifi. Any idea? Thanks in advance

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  2 роки тому

      That’s just WiFi. 20 MB/s is 200 mbit internet. Even with ‘fast’ wifi there is a ton of dropped packets that have to be resent.

    • @lexsemenenko
      @lexsemenenko 2 роки тому

      @@SpaceRexWill Thank you for the reply!! But I am still confused. I know my WiFi speed is way faster. For example, if I simply test my Internet speed over just wifi (Google Speed Test), I get around 500MB/s down/up. Meaning that if it was just wifi, it would also be limited to 20MB/s.
      Using the same WiFi to a cheap WD MyCloud HDD gives me like 75MB/s. But 12MB/s between two high end macs doesn't sound right.

    • @lexsemenenko
      @lexsemenenko 2 роки тому

      And AirPlay is way faster than via SMB between the same two Macs. Maybe some sort of on the fly encription is happening that slows speed down

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  2 роки тому

      The reason airdrop is faster is it’s connecting the two macs directly together, not going over your WiFi network

      @@SpaceRexWill Do you have a tutorial on using a Mac as combined VPN and file server? I plan on buying a 4TB disk for my Mac Mini and using it as a private “cloud storage” which i can access remotely on my iPhone.

    • @johannespettersen
      @johannespettersen Рік тому +1

      I have bought the 4TB SSD, setup the Mac for remote SMB, and I can confirm that it does work!
      I am no expert on how security, so I do not know how safe/unsafe it might be.
      This is how I did it:
      0: (optional, but recommended) Make a really strong password to increase safety.
      1. Enable “File sharing” in system preferences and selecting folders to share
      2. Find your Mac´s IP address in network settings in preferences
      3. Setup port forwarding to that IP address. Port 445 worked for me
      4. Find your routers public IP address (google “what’s my ip?”)
      5. On your iPad, go to Files app, tap “Connect to server” enter your public IP, port, then your Mac´s username and password. It would resemble this:
      12.123.123.123:445
