Get rid of key. Replace it with starter button. Put a secret cut out switch in starter circuit. Total cost less than $20. Make sure you can preheat glowplugs too.
Totally agree on losing the key switch but you need a power switch, kill switch and preheat switch with the Bukh DV 10 or at least the one I deal with. The preheat is a heater in the intake. I have momentary toggle switches for preheat and the kill solenoid.
Big respect for this girl, being out on her own in the middle of an ocean and savvy enough to come up with an electro-mechanical solution when she needs it. Her parents trained her well.
It is in her blood. I remember, all those years ago, reading articles written by her parents in either Cruising World or Sail magazine when she was just a baby (articles included photos). She is awesome.
A replacement ignition switch is a simple and relatively cheap fix. It’s not worth the frustration, just replace it with a toggle switch and a push button start.
Thanks for introducing Sailor James. I am working through all of his videos like I did through yours and it's a real treat to see both of your videos show up.
Hey Holley, add a clip of Tish at the end, maybe doing something like waving bye, or pulling the last of hair out....lol.... would be cool see who we need to appreciate, for keeping you on tact....
Voyage repairs show the ingenuity of the person in charge of the engine space. 30 years ship repair I've seen it all. The Vice Grips were a clever fix. No rush to do a perminate fix as long as the temp works to the next long term port.
May I suggest - also for other single handed sailors like James - hearing you'll be heading for Vanuatu, to visit Tonga Islands [Vavaú -Ha'apai - Tonga -Eua] - if you can - bcos, when I was there (twice) long time ago this, then almost untouched group of 90+ islands, was one of the highlights on our whole round-the-world adventures. Rajai Ampat, Indonesia is excellent for diving/snorkeling, but probably expensive...Fair winds!
Many years ago when I was 10 years old I climbed a Norfolk Pine like the one you showed yourself climbing, the views were really great as it was the tallest tree for many miles around. Also I have the same green pile jacket as you, though mine is mostly worn out and my cat sleeps on it a lot. Safe travels 🙂
Hi, I just love your channel. It's funny, inspiring and interesting how you bring your dream of sailing the world into reality. The way you solve issues like the key problem is great to watch. Being Self reliant is so important and you are great at it. Keep it going and enjoy the voyage!
Grips of jankey. Kubota knock-off ignition is my choice. A second is planned for the cabin. As is a twin mainsheet, after more money. Get a manual access to the deceleration on the pump. Most have just an electrical solenoid moving to deceleration/ cut-off. The Geck keeps improving halfway around the world.
Your contraption is really inventive. We have something similar--it's a preventer system that came on a lot of the old Valiant sailboats--and it works great, set up more or less like yours. Love your channel BTW!
Glad you now have a reliable engine. It must make you more relaxed. An ingenious bodge on the ignition but it seems a lot of work just to avoid doing the job properly especially as you already had the ignition switch that came with the engine 🤔
I put my solar shower on bubble-wrap covered in al-foil on the deck head, and covered it all with clear acetate to keep the wind from cooling it. The water gets so hot one has to dilute it for use.
I swear Captain you could work on anything from a stealth bomber to an Elgin pocket watch. As I've said before, you are living proof that a sailor and a farmer have something in common. Give either of them a problem and they will come up with a solution. You and Dan enjoy yourselves!
I had a Mazda years ago that had a vacuum line permanently pinched off with a mini vice grip like that, it was handy, I always knew where a vice grip was if I needed it.
your 'new' windward sheeting end-of-boom system is basically half of Barry's (old sea dog) double-mainsheet system, which has it's own pros and cons .. you could double your system and mimic his, and reserve your mid-boom-sheeting system as a back up.
Thank you for all of the videos. I have enjoyed watching it for quite some time, and as someone who has been in the maritime industry for decades let me say, your resilience and abilities are quite impressive. In all the years I’ve watched this is the only time I’ve ever had any concern for anything that I have seen, and I’m a little worried about attaching what is now your main sheet onto that pad eyeand its ability to sustain and heavy weather just a thought captain . Thanks again you’re awesome .
Came here to say the same thing. She said she'd tie it off with a preventer, I think, but still. If the strain is left on that padeye and she takes a squall or strong gust, it seems likely it would snap it. I don't want to see shards of metal, that block, or line whipping through her cockpit. She's a smart cookie, though, I'm sure she's thought of all this.
I also admire the capabilities of this young woman and in particular her ability to think outside the box but sometimes a proper fix is better than a jury rig. A main track car system is designed to take the sudden loads of a gybe (upwards of 2 tonnes) where a pad eye is just small bolts through the deck and this system is only for light winds, nothing over 5-6kts. That can only be used with a preventer and monitoring the weather conditions (and I’m not trying to tell you how to suck eggs 🤣) as the sea has no mercy for the unwary. Enjoy NZ and I think you’re next leg up to Vanuatu which is a nice place to visit and you’ll find a quaint French influence as well. I bid you fair winds and safe sailing dear 👍👍🤩🤩
Yeah, the Kite gear is in the van! Hope you find amazing places to go kiting and have an epic time. Be safe! I just kited over 50nm over two days back here in sunny FL. Love this sport!
Yes, I get afternoon to relax and sell and break out your little JBL speaker and listen to some good music and maybe even that song, the canvas can do miracles enjoy
Do you have a multimeter on board? If not, get one. A basic understanding of 12v circuits would allow you to approach rewiring etc with more confidence . In the case of the ignition switch (really a stop/ start switch) you would see that swapping in an ignitiion switch is basic, and in this simple situation 2 momentary switchs would easily replace the start/stop switch.
Enjoy the shaky island. Safe river anchorage. Should be smoking volcanoes. Train on s Island nice. Rotarua thermal pools, Queenstown was very memorable.
So glad the engine is working out for you! Also like the creative thinking on the main for a better boom angle, but.... The padeye you are using on the deck is 90 degrees wrong. Yeah yeah, I know, little boat, I'll only use it when it's light air, blah blah blah, but that's really not good Holly. If it lets go you or someone else could really get hurt. If you send me the contact I'll send you a pair of padeyes adaquate for the load which you can mount aft and pependicular to the existing ones (Spin sheet blocks?). I wish I could be a Patreon, but I'm a poor rigger. I do have a lot of parts though, let me hook you up. It's the least I can do.
Your sailing has inspired me, im working on getting my CANSAIL 1 this year in June with the hope of sailing down to the bahamas and caribbean in the next couple of years once I complete CANSAIL and get enough experience with sailing the great lakes.
Good job girlfriend, you're doing your parents very very proud I'm not sure if you understand that, but you should your parents have done a great job you are a sweetheart and a smart one at that
Score on the engine. Congrats. Thanks for the footage and keeping is raw and real. I hope that after I have drained my savings and have refit my boat I can start saving again and have something to offer you on Patrion. Fair winds and following seas to ya!
When I leave mine, I have a 12 volt dehumidifier I rig up powered by a solar panel, which discharges into the galley sink. When the sun comes up it charges a small battery from a car jump-start kit, and this runs the dehumidifier which draws less than five amps. I remove the main engine start battery and place in storage mode. To do this, I fully charge it, then empty it of its electrolyte and flush out the empty battery with a little distilled water. The electrolyte I keep aside in a proper plastic bottle for the purpose. When I return, I simply refill the battery with its electrolyte, top up if necessary with a little distilled water and give a top up charge, and it is as good as new. A battery may be preserved for years by using this simple ploy. No acid--no sulphation.
Hi Holly. I would make sure to keep the vice grips hanging straight down/vertically - less likely for it to turn accidentally to start or off. Keep on keepin on. Cheers.
She is one of the very few 'real' sailors doing content today. Always worth watching.
and Sailing Triteia
you're like a character out of a Wes Anderson movie-- quirky, self-reliant, loveable
Holly, you are the best! I love watching your adventures. Also thank you Tish!
There is a universal ignition switch, for that motor, and the part number is on the part itself, love your videos, 😊
Get rid of key. Replace it with starter button. Put a secret cut out switch in starter circuit. Total cost less than $20. Make sure you can preheat glowplugs too.
And a stop button because the fuel cutoff seems to be solenoid operated. No glow plugs on the Bukh I believe.
Yes, my thoughts, too.
Totally agree on losing the key switch but you need a power switch, kill switch and preheat switch with the Bukh DV 10 or at least the one I deal with. The preheat is a heater in the intake. I have momentary toggle switches for preheat and the kill solenoid.
@@daveg4 Plus 1 to all of that. Saves me writing a post. Don't compromise on the switches. Proper marine switches, not cheap Chinese rubbish.
@@ross82 Yes.
Big respect for this girl, being out on her own in the middle of an ocean and savvy enough to come up with an electro-mechanical solution when she needs it. Her parents trained her well.
And thanks to the Old Seadog for sending us to her channel.
It is in her blood. I remember, all those years ago, reading articles written by her parents in either Cruising World or Sail magazine when she was just a baby (articles included photos). She is awesome.
Yeah she never seems to worry about whether or not she can find a solution to any given problem, she just does it. A true MacGyver at heart.
A replacement ignition switch is a simple and relatively cheap fix. It’s not worth the frustration, just replace it with a toggle switch and a push button start.
Seriously, that switch is a easy fix and not costly.
Big inspiration for those of us still on the dock!
No kidding I've been fantasizing with these channels to sate me while I fix mine
Love the geco!I'm jealous of dan!
That music had a real Weepies vibe. I like it :)
"even though I've got a new engine & I can use it, I prefer to sail" - beautiful
Thanks for introducing Sailor James. I am working through all of his videos like I did through yours and it's a real treat to see both of your videos show up.
I love the feeling you get after all the “cruddy old stuff” gets “snarfed off by the motaahhh.”
Thank you Holly for taking us along on this sweet sweet journey 👍🏼
Hey Holley, add a clip of Tish at the end, maybe doing something like waving bye, or pulling the last of hair out....lol.... would be cool see who we need to appreciate, for keeping you on tact....
Ahoy! From a salty, crusty, 78 year old Navy Veteran...that little "triangle thing is called a chock. Fair winds, and following seas, WH. Cheers! :)
Voyage repairs show the ingenuity of the person in charge of the engine space. 30 years ship repair I've seen it all. The Vice Grips were a clever fix. No rush to do a perminate fix as long as the temp works to the next long term port.
Holly, you are still awesome in my book. Stay safe and enjoy NZ.
80,000 subscribers any minute now! yeweee!!! Congrats
At 19:11 I love Dans face😅...is that because of all the unmentionables hanging from the roof..
Thanks Tish!

As always, I am super impressed with your resourcefulness. Great field repair on the ignition switch!
Very beautiful place. Thank you for letting me see it with you.
Fabulous bit of engineering ,, !!
quick thinking Brilliant!
You are awesome as are vice grips. Love your postings and in awe of your journey
Hail to the Red Bastard, have fun be safe! Need new ignition switch now huh? Lol great idea for the preventer.
Aaaghhh how have I only found your channel now! Aaww I miss Nz a bunch, I was just there sigh!
Hi, I just love your channel. It's funny, inspiring and interesting how you bring your dream of sailing the world into reality.

and she is one heck of a mechanic …👍
Awesome bad ass MacGyver skills on your ignition work around...Impressive
Love your gutsy can do attitude to life and sailing
I love that system with mainsheet
Grips of jankey. Kubota knock-off ignition is my choice. A second is planned for the cabin. As is a twin mainsheet, after more money. Get a manual access to the deceleration on the pump. Happy for you and new motor.
Congratulations you have earned a masters degree in cobble joble, keep on cruising kiddo great job
Cool. Have fun.
You are one amazing individual. Keep up the great work and thank you for the entertainment!
Great to see you are in my country!
That tree climb was scary!
New engine - woohoo 🎉 🎉🎉 super happy for you.
Your amazing young lady. Thank you for your hard work. I look forward to see all your videos.
Marvelous, enjoy your Van trip.
Hey,
Just subscribed…been watching James for a while. Now I’m looking forward to seeing more of your content.
Be safe out there!
✌️
I'd love to sail the Bay of Islands one day.
Cheers Gray
Brisbane, Australia
Love your courage and resourcefulness!
Just started watching your videos. I'm going to be crossing oceans very soon and your videos are very informative. You're the real deal
i love the wrap up talk...

Happpy trails on land.
I love your videos. I've just subscribed to your Patreon 😊

Awesome job on the engine! 🎉❤
love you from fulaga you are a genius
Just in case you weren't aware....You are a very talented woman ! 👍🇦🇺
I had a Mazda years ago that had a vacuum line permanently pinched off with a mini vice grip like that, it was handy, I always knew where a vice grip was if I needed it.

The South Island rocks, being as it’s where I live, I can recommend some great places.
I'm enjoying your freedom... your earning it.

Have to admit, listening to your engine start, reminded me of Bert and I and the Bluebird.
Well, I got her started

Omg get down from that tree! 🤣
Love it, Love it, Love it……………
Dans a seman i take it,
Guessing his bags are empty ,unpacked in the van ready and waiting for your company 😂
Cool voyage, you two.

You're so much fun! I'm wondering why you didn't put out a stern anchor as well as your primary when you were faced with opposing wind and current.
Hi gorgeous, I love watching your adventures. Is it possible to put a polarising filter on you camera? It's a great tool to have in the bag.
Awesome video girl!!! New engine sounds great!!!

Just subbed holly good stuff.... Lee South Africa
Still a bit of a slow start Holly,. How's your battery?
Do sailors still use ssb radio, i don't seem to see them any longer, and great video , looks like much fun ....
Yes agree with 3 comments prior get rid of the key and if you need to just pull the 2 wires out from behind and touch them together
In an emergency 😊
