Today’s game shows, whether they’re Mr. Beast on UA-cam or Storage Wars on cable, often feature sensationalistic editing, recreations, and straight-up fixing. But it wasn’t always that way. As the above video shows, game shows in America have gone from unregulated, to a Federally regulated activity, and back to unregulated once again.
The Quiz Show scandals of the 1950s set in motion a new law that enforced rules for games of skill. But, as the above video shows, changing media consumption habits and expectations have made game shows a wild west once again.

A major problem with the "everyone knows" attitude which I haven't seen addressed: it functionally means that we don't get to have real game shows. Producers are heavily disincentivized to make them, and even if they did, there's really know way for us to spot the diamond among the glass.

This is very true, sometimes companies actually want regulations like this because it puts them all on the same playing field by law instead of racing to the bottom through underhanded hyper-competition.

the squid games game show is not rigged at all. it's actually blatantly obvious because the characters we're supposed to care for/root against get eliminated basically right away and stuff done to build suspense dies out cause the competitors who gained the advantage get eliminated before they can use it. Totally pointless.

So there were two main ones that happened that altered the outcomes of challenges.
      1) In the first challenge, there was something that happened accidentally that would have given one of the contestant pairs an advantage. Producers were going to let it slide, since it just happened naturally, but other people on set didn't get the memo, so they had already started to reset the challenge for that pair. So what you see in the show is an edit of the pair's two attempts at the challenge.
      2) The second challenge had two parts: eating "food" and then shooting a bow and arrow (depending on if you finished your food or not) with the worst shot sending that contestant pair home. Before starting the bow and arrow portion, we were told that if the arrow didn't hit the target (basically a big paper on a haybale), we would be allowed to reshoot (so all contestants knew this going in). The final contestant pair to shoot hit what looked like the very bottom of the target. But when producers went to look, they ruled that it had just missed the target and was just in the haybale, so they gave that pair the chance to shoot again. On the second shot, the arrow hit close to bulls-eye, giving that team the win.

They kept letting main characters get thrown out left and right. Then that nice old man and young guy the audience loved won some secret thing, but then immediately got eliminated because of it and we never found out what happened. Same with that other dude - wins something advantageous to build suspense, but then gets eliminated 2 minutes later.
