Fascinating x we definitely need the pier back and the bandstand for some good old fashioned entertainment.

Loved the dancing on the Tamar cruise and the pier looked pretty amazing. So sad it’s all lost.

Sadly the Plymouth that I was privaledged to know and experience in the mid fifties and sixties has long gone. I last visited in 2010 and not only has the wonderful south west accent disappeared to be replaced by a generic southern one but the warm feeling has gone. Much of Plymouth now has the sound and feel of a London overspill. Despite my feeling and mild criticism it is still where my heart is but I could not return to live there. Thank you for the great films especially of the troops leaving for the Somme. My grandfather served in the Devonshire regiment and fought at the Somme, so guess that he was somewhere in that crowd of troops.😢R.I.P my dear grandad x

It seems that 50's and 60's planners did as much or possibly more damage to Plymouth than the Luftwaffe could have ever hoped for!

Still a lot of Janners in Plymouth, I hear Devonian a lot in the city when I visit, even younger kids still sound Devonian to me, I know some in their twenties. From Bodmin.

The date of the last scene is more 1956 than '49 as the RBS building in the shot wasn't built till then.

So sad we require so much nowadays to get the ounce of community these spirited people once had.

During the Blitz community spirited people from Yelverton, Roborough and Horrabridge put up Plymouthians escaping the bombing. Many were robbed blind by their guests. An appeal by Torquay Council for money to help the victims of bombing in Plymouth was closed down after a week having raised the staggering sum of 13s. And, no, that wasn't a lot money in 1941. You need to take off the rose-coloured spectacles.

I lived in Plymouth for five years in the 1970s.Devonian deep roots on both my mother and father's family.I would love to have seen and walked in dear old Plymouth before those evil nazi bombs hit and destroyed so very much of the city.

This clip could easily be edited down to the right walking pace........this would improve the film greatly; make it more personable.
