Denko Sekka in Japanese is 電光-雪花 which means "Lightning Snowflake" and is seen on the card with the lightning charged sword and the snowflakes. It is also a pun in Japanese 電光石火 also pronounced denkousekka it is a Yojijukugo, a type of poem composed of four kanji, and it literally translates as Electric Light Stone Fire, and describes a lightning strike. It means roughly as "fast as lighting", which might be the basis of it's ability to disable set cards since it is "too fast" for set cards.
If it’s any indication how awful this format was, we skipped over the cards from Cybernetic Horizon. As much as Soul Fusion gives us a lot of the decks that were later embodied in TOSS format, CYHO introduced the Dangers, Crusadias and Borrelsword Dragon, the latter becoming very important in enabling decks to OTK like never before.
You're right... did the format really not evolve at all during this time? Where are the Rhongomyniad decks and Crusadia OTKs I remember? That's skipping over a LOT of cards just to say "And Gouki kept being played".
These Thunder Dragon cards are the perfect example for good legacy support. Took a simple effect of an oldschool card and turned it into a decent archetype.
After Konami discovered extra linking was broken curtesy of Flames of Destruction, this was when they backtracked to older summoning mechanics and in turn broke the Vrains anime. and eventually the ace of the series FireWall Dragon was banned.
I realized that this is basically just a repeat of the Magic Ruler episode from all that time ago, both decks win pretty much guaranteed if they go first, one player is making the opponent discard all their cards, and the other is playing electric snakes.
Fusion Gate turbo is a hilarious Goat format deck - Thunder Dragon discard for 2 Thunder Dragons, banish 2 substitute fusion materials like King of the Swamp; two Twin-Headed Thunder Dragons. Open Premature Burial and top deck another fusion substitute then you can make it three Twin-Headed Thunder Dragons. All to get hit by Tribe Infecting Virus/Dark Hole/Lightning Vortex on the opponent's turn. ^_^"

I wanted to play this build of THUD so bad when it came out but *man* was it ever pricey. Colossus and Titan were both Short Printed and the main decked cards (with the exception of Matrix) were all Ultras so the deck was crazy expensive for its time.
Its really interesting to me seeing the history of the game being told by you guys, because here in south America, at the same time, we had a completely different format, but the only difference in card pool was summon sorceress (wich was only legal in Brazil after It was banned btw). You guys had a gouki tier 0 while we had a sky Striker tier 0. Maybe its interesting for you to explore these differences caused by the regions.
Don’t fall for Joseph’s explanation in the beginning you only needed one name and a warrior extender (I even made sure by looking at combo videos from those times). It’s just those combos were more volatile to handtraps.
Soul Fusion is literally the TOSS set. Introduced 3/4 of the archetypes (unless you count OG Thunder Dragon) into the game that would dominate the format until the end of the next year.
I count ThunDra for this. Prior to SoFu, the only ThunDra cards that existed were OG and Twin Headed. The archetype (by extension, the deck) was released in SoFu.
I find it so cool and interesting how many times Mali, Grepher and Armagedon were playable and meta together ever since their release up to the modern yugioh The tree musketeers of tier 1/0 broken dark decks
It's a miracle this game made it past this year of history. Every deck that year just hand looped, FTK'd, extra linked or multiple of those at once. What an absolute shitshow

When thunder first came out, I think the best variant was definitely dino thunder. That deck slapped and was so consistent. I didn't lose for like 2 months

I play ThunDra in Master Duel, and man, do I have fun. I play two variants: Lightsworn Fossil ThunDra and Myutant ThunDra. Either way, my main play is to get to a point where I pitch the O.G. for the O.G., then the O.G. for the O.G., then use the Fusion spell to recycle them and pitch O.G. for O.G., then O.G. for O.G. Up to four pops for Colossus.

Seeing BLs in the profile I just knew Cimo was going to be the person to play the deck and I knew it was going to be in his opening hand.
I miss colossus. Even without the floodgate effect, it’s important for thunder dragon combos. It’s practically a link 1.
