as somone living in a rural area it would be very interesting to look at case studies for where rural rail connections are needed and where they can be skipped.

Bridging the sound of Mull is possible you can get the required span down to ~2km which is possible via a single span. It would be one of the longest spans in the world but there is a 2Km span over the Dardanelles. The major issue is that it goes from the middle of nowhere to the back of beyond rather than linking Europe and Asia Minor on a major motorway route. The sky bridge was PPP initially but there was no actual private finance (the builders got all the money from the UK government and the EU) so the contract got cancelled and the toll removed.

I know people who worked on study, it would be a tunnel and it's very solvable. Just needs capital commitment. Norway has underwater tunnels everywhere, the approach would mimic this.

33:28 tbf the 90 second hop only exists as part of the Kirkwall flight. it’d be more daft to have two completely separate flights to westray and papa from Kirkwall

Will the Government invest in the North by buying the new trains for Northern, or will the trains be rented from the City?
