I put the slider in place when: the front sprocket cover, the front sprocket, the chain, and the chain-guard were removed. Because in my case the replacement of the slider was done as part of a general Chain/Sprocket treatment.
I don't think it should be a problem to put on the slider without disassembling the front sprocket and the chain, but the front sprocket cover needs to be removed, and I think the chain-guard should be removed as well.
