- Volkswagen, the world's second-largest automaker, on Tuesday announced that it will enter a 50-50 joint-venture with US electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Rivian.
Germany-based VW said it will invest up to $5 billion (€4.7 billion) in a deal to jointly develop next-generation software that both it and the California-based Rivian will share in their vehicles.

I am in IT sector in Germany for the last couple of years. It's really coasting along really, like planning for planning, constant delays and unforeseen complexities, cut expectations at the end of season, constant staff sickness for weeks if not months, get a review to see what we have achieved so far to have something to show to upper management so we can continue having this team or product, .. It is not surprising at all that almost no significant software comes out of Germany that feels good, fast, reliable, has excellent user experience and not over-engineered, doesn't requires a steep learning curve, doesn't have a few kilos of manuals that if you miss reading them, a good customer service over them..
The fact that VW can’t make their own software tells a lot.
Germany has much more legal regulations that USA. Probably the VW software headquarters employees, will be moved ofitialy to USA, but phisycaly working from germany and around europe and USA.
If you order software and hardware solution for cheap you will get crappy result...
VW thought they can simply outsource R&D for software and hardware with cheap labour from Hungary (Harman International) and expected that final product will be fine.
Even though there are some great developers in Hungary for sure... no one in EU or US will work for 1/3... specially these days...
They can, but it means employing many many people and investing lots of TIME and money. The software they used to have is very different to whats needed now and this needs serious R&D. This could be quite a clever solution for both sides IMO.
Two losers join together will still be losers.
@@hyuxion Only a loser would call VW a loser :)
This is great! It keeps Rivian in the game and best of all, it pisses off Elmo over at Tesla... I really hope it is a win win for both Rivian and VW.
Hahahahahah 😂, I love your delusion.
@@ws1814 Exactly! They think its that easy and its only about money
lol, Rivian.
They are the electric version of a kit car company.
Elmo needs to find himself behind bars.
@@PerfectoKiss Why?
I wonder if this opens up rivian to the vw dealership network.
Just hope VW actually goes all in on EVs and that this isn’t a hostile takeover.
If VW is serious with this, this could make VW a lot better.
Hope VW makes Rivian available in Europe!
It is actually a bad news. For years everybody knows what are the biggest problems. 1) too complicated electric systems 2) old parts with old SOC to run it. 3) too much variety in types of parts. The other problem is that traditional auto makers like VW still thinks that when you ship the car that's it. They use over the air updates only for fixing small glitches and they ship refreshed models with new OS every 3-4 years. For example I bought Cupra Leon 2023. Now they made "new" model with almost the same screen and the same SOC but they won't update UI. To get better interface I need to buy new 60K€ car... and with Tesla and Rivian it's the opposite. When I switch to EV it probably won't be anything from VW group.
the fact that you called it Wokeswagen and not FoLksWagen on DW 😭
Forget these self driving and sensors for everything.
Make an affordable vehicle.
Make it play music have AC thats it!
Exactly!
They don't build an affordable car because expensive cars have higher profit margins and they prefer to squeeze their customers than their shareholders.
They try to, but still are losing money per ev made.
And if they don't offer some major features that the competition has, why would the consumer buy one for the same price and even cheaper right now with Tesla 🤷🏻♂️
You are describing a Dacia or FIAT. The problem is that this is not an option for VW. They cannot go for the low-price markets, especially not now that a VW with no electronics or fancy parts in it will still be as expensive as a BYD-dolphin which is a fairly advanced vehicle.
Nobody wants to pay extra for German these days, because German made is not really a huge quality stamp.
The best investment VW has ever done except of Rimac technology 😊❤❤
the last time a german company invested in an US company was bayer acquisition of mosanto. Bayer lost 40% of its value afterwards and on the edge of split.
I never understood why Bayer wanted to buy Monsanto. It seemed a really bad idea.
Did he just say that Rivian is loosing $40,000 on each car sold... ? That can't be right.
The amount of the investment is uncorrect, it is a lot less, please inform viewers properly.
This must be more than infotainment and also include things like battery management software
VW is now the biggest share holder of rivian! They also get software and developer ressource for the US and global market.
Bigger than Amazon?
Hope to see Rivian come in Europe.
At this point, Volkswagen should buy out Rivian.
Buying a company is not as great as you think it is.
Rivian is on the brink of bankruptcy anyway.
VW are now the primary shareholders. VW can fire all of rivians leaders and install their own board of directors. Rivian is done in. The writing is on the wall. They can't make any profit on their oversized, underperforming battery boxes, they lost a billion dollars already, so they took whatever ilifeline they could grab.
Rivian doesn't make pickups for rural or working folk, they are a software company that doesn't understand cars at all, never did, so VW has no need to keep the riivian badge at all. They just want to compete in the euro ev markets because euros don't buy large trucks like we do.. they do not want to enter the American EV political war.
Maybe time for some better investigation. Cariad is not a software, it is subdivision of the Volkswagen group that produces software.
Quick reality check. In 1Q24, Rivian's loss per vehicle was over $100,000. As proof... in 1Q24, Rivian lost $1.4 bill. Rivian sold 13,588 vehicles. Rivian's GAAP loss clearly works out to $103,032 per vehicle. In 4Q23, Rivian's gaap loss was $107.4k/vehicle. Rivian's situaion is beyond dire. Rivian needs to sell its cars for around $200k+ just to break even on a gaap basis. Almost impossible. Rivian's inability to reduce its massive losses is why Rivian is headed for certain bankruptcy
All auto sales are down. It's not just EV's.
A Rivian for all people RW
Is rivian has good software ?
Better software than Volkswagen
@@mikafiltenborg7572 ohh yah VW software has lot of bugs, sometimes it's completely blocking the screen
@@mikafiltenborg7572 That's not saying much.
Mobileye MBLY should benefit from this deal as well.
Rivian can only survive if they learn to bring down cost of production a lot. So far they have proven inept to learn how to mass-produce.
I don't know the current status of the software on ID3, but the first version was totally garbage and why did VW released it, in that state...
Electronics and software in cars are just a huge hassle because it makes everything brittle, hard to repair and locked down...
My dream car would be a EV with open source software and hardware that was built to be durable and easy to maintain and repair.
The real question is; Will Terry ever come out of hes early teenage voice,, 🤔
Yet another German car company buying American technology then going on to tell the end user how great their German technology is.
The same as US companies did for years. Grow up.
Oh no! Sure hope nothing flows from Volkswagen towards Rivian other than money. VW EVs are JUNK!
VW is desperately trying to keep some of Tesla’s “competition” alive. Good.
What has been glaringly omitted in this segment is that China has nearly 100 EV manufacturing plants and their software/hardware is leagues ahead of VW and American car manufacturers. Also, Chinese cars are far, far cheaper which is a big draw to the middle class around the world. We are not seeing the result of China's high tech and low cost EV's because countries in direct competition are levying 50%+ tariffs on the import of Chinese EV's. It is a stumbling block for the west for sure, we cannot compete with Chinese employment standards nor should we.
The Germans have always had problems with software development. 30 hour work weeks, extensive vacations probably is part of it.
It's usually 40h/week + (un)paid overtime, Depending on your contract...
"...lead to loses" !? Rivian has never not loss money. Good for both sides though. VW needed the tech (ID line is a mess) and Rivian needs the money to get the R2, R3 to market.
So it's shifting to the US
Like the Xpeng investment, waste of money. And there is still an disclaimer. They check first if it is feasible. Other car manufacturers did an investigstion and said "the computer said no".
VW has so much cash to splurge and will slowly aim to gobble up Rivian period.
Jesus, whoever did this deal for VW should be fired. Rivian burns through money like crazy.
Right…Investing in the US is all EU needs at the moment
I don’t see VW succeeding with its current lineup of EVs so they should go all in on this deal.
Vw burned billions trying to build software and their EVs are just a disaster. That's what you end up with if you treat software as a cost and outsource it to the lowest bidder.
VW will invest 5 billions in a company that's losing 40.000 EUR per car?
Germans, meine Freunde, you will not be working 4 days a week anytime soon :)
They hope to get better software with that deal, they could not care less if Rivian is losing money, VW is making profits still, but that 5 billion investment needs to pay off.
Besides that VW is cutting jobs here in Germany, so do the other car manufacturers, they don't need use anymore, we will get our well deserved 4 workday week 😂
Why does VW invests $5bn in Rivian, because the big bosses at VW didn't have the balls to make the right decisions 12 years ago and did lol about Tesla and CO. Typically German decisions the money for the big bosses first.
One of Rivian investor is Saudi Arabian.
That explains why they're laying off 8,000 software engineers domestically.
Both sides will unite patents both of software and electric hardware, and than use AI to replace all not usable anymore programmers.
😂 Scared VW from BYD
😅
Yah BYD doing huge markings in Europe
You can thank China for this new development.
no more Software manipulation??
Wtf when Diess wanted to develop their own platform he was fired. Now they are giving 5bln€ to an US company. Perhaps Trump is right...
This will probably be a huge mistake
But at what cost?
What happened with China's EVs?
They are years ahead and still are.
Still in discussions about possible trade tariffs with the E.U. and USA. related to Chinese business practices.
@@lvovodessa You meant years and years behind!
Peter Rawlinson (Lucid Motors CEO and former Tesla chief engineer), May 10, 2024.:
Chinese automakers are still *"years and years behind" Tesla on EV technology.*
*"If you look at the advance in core EV technology, they're still years and years behind Tesla,"*
The former Tesla engineer said that Chinese EVs had progressed "immeasurably" in recent years, and were now superior to their western counterparts "in terms of fit and finish quality." However, Rawlinson thought *their engineering was still lacking.*
*"In terms of the elegance of their drive train technology, the batteries, the way things are integrated … it's not even close," he said.*
*"I was looking at a number of the units on display at the Geneva Motor Show and the engineering was very disappointing."*
@@JigilJigil Isn’t battery technology the most important part?
They are a national security risk.
Bad Joint venture. Two failure does not make a success.
Pretty sure VW will pull out of the deal in 2-3 years.
You give me the soft, I will give you the experience how to build and scale and we both will loose more money. Guaranteeee !!!
Two companies that make sone of the worst vehicles around, joining forces. GIGO now applies to cars.
Really - Rivian? The one with work conditions of sweatshops.
Bailout for Rivian.
VW is on life support lol 😂!!! Looking for a miracle and USA 🇺🇸 will bail them out obviously!!
😂😂😂
Thank God!!! lmao
It’s too late and too little. The market is already owned by Tesla.
And yet Tesla’s sales are down, margins are down, profits are down, the CT is a massive loss for them, FSD is going nowhere, and people think a robo-taxi will save them. BYD will crush them. The market will change dramatically in the next 3 years.
@@JCintheBCChave you seen FSD 12? It’s a game changer for sure. Leagues ahead of any other Self driving system
This is a 5BN $ heist
Loose Loose?
Winn winn
I'm guessing lose lose
I can't believe VW is giving money to rivian. What a joke!
Boomers sitting in legacy manufactorers such as VW have no idea how to build software. Have you ever been in an Audi, BMW or Mecedez? The infotainment system in these cars is a joke.
@@ev.c6 Are you telling me they can't hire software engineers to come up with infotainment system that can play movies, social media, news etc. etc.?
Buy Tesla
No one wants electric vehicles buy a new one,and after a year you lose 20k or 30K straight away
VW + RIVIAN =
Titanic 🚢.........
Titanic steaming along the calm dark sea:
- Captain Rivian: „we have the best sensor suite in the business, including Radar“
- Captain Elon: „Vision only!!! We even deactivated the radar that is present in our ship“
VW money would have been better spent with BYD. BYD is doing much better than Rivian. It has both superior hardware and software. BYD has 8000+ software engineers. Thus why go with a 3rd rate company?
Are you joking? Rivian has a better performance platform. BYD only has better battery tech but lags behind Rivian in power electronics and the software. Rivian has some of the smoothest software on the market only next to Tesla’s and their vehicle integration and packaging is amazing. BYD is still catching up n tat regard
Rules and restrictions on doing business in/with China. The balance of power is biased towards China taking advantage of any foreign/domestic partnership deal rather than letting two businesses work together to make a solid product, a nice profit from the sale of those products, and giving the consumer a good value.
BYD is owned by the communist party. It is a weapon, not a car. They don't belong in the west.
