I was busting my butt to get a bunch of salvia planted yesterday so they will have the 4 days of cool rain to help them get established established before the heat f summer comes 🤗💚🌱
I can’t tell you how many times I see people on FB advising others to water, water, water, when a plant is wilted. It drives me nuts. Your garden is looking so lush!
Thank you, Jim, I rely on this series of videos to remind me of what/when I should be doing certain things. It’s easy for time to get away from me in the garden. Very appreciative of your content!
I am just now getting to mulching... I'm usually done by now. The cold and not having as much time this year to get in the garden, has set me back a bit. Good to know I'm not alone!
Congratulations on reaching 200k subscribers Jim! This monthly checklist is so helpful...and I feel better about just now finishing up mulching my beds. Took me longer than usual this year, but it'll be done by the 4th/5th of June. 😀🌱
Is that a sweet potato vine that large hanging down? Wondered if it's perennial there or did it grow that much in one year? It's pretty! Whatever it is!
It's been my fate, that often I hear my name when it's being applied to a pet... I had to hear our neighbor's, over the back fence, hollering at their dog, Holly, to "shut up!" throughout my adolescence.
Hey Jim I live in Florida and I don’t have a green thumb. I recently have bought some plants for my front yard/ porch. I wish can help me in letting me know if I should buy more plants or shrubs for a 27ft by 3ft area. I can submit a picture if you like so you can get a better picture of the space. I truly appreciate it
Oh yes, the birds are free pest control. I grew some cabbages and lettuce to attract white cabbage butterflies, so that I could have year round butterflies, and the birds keep eating the caterpillars. The nicest brassicas I have ever had.
One thing I find difficult is knowing if on a newly planted shrub can the root ball dry out faster than the surrounding soil? Or will the root ball and surrounding soil equalize moisture when watering thoroughly between waterings?
Most of my plants are doing really well, just got the ginkgo in the ground. My photinias were doing really well in their pots, but since planting, the green, established leaves are turning bright red/ yellow and look very dull and falling off.. tried adding stuff to the soil to help improve it but 🤷♀️ hopefully they won't die 🥺
Hey Jim...what is that weeping tree you have to your left at 5:13? I have one of those and would like to know how to care for it. Thank you for such good informational videos!
Any tips for dealing with grasshoppers? They decimate plants overnight it seems 😩 I have lots of birds, but they don’t seem to keep up with the grasshoppers.
Hey Jim, Where is your video about suckers on tomato plants? You mentioned it once, but I can't find it. I'm new at growing tomatoes, and my four plants are getting huge!! Thanks in advance. 🍅
Thank you so informative as usual. We don't think enough of the wind drying out the plants. A bit confused by the 1 inch a week watering. I have a 3 gallon size watering can that I pour once a week around my plants; Is that enough or too much?
I tried the water hose method on the aphids and it just wasn't working this year. So I just ordered a large amount of ladybugs and in two days I can hardly find any aphids left which is saying alot, because they were all over the place.
Hey Jim, I noticed your cattle panels are only around 4 feet tall. Don't your indeterminates get a lot (LOT) bigger than that? What do you do when they start getting really big?
Nothing actually. Works out how it works out. I do run my tomatoes back and forth as they go up, but they just become bushy at the top and I never have any issues with it
Interesting. I haven't ever fertilized the shrubs right in front of the house. How would I do that? Do I need a liquid? I have landscape fabric and a drip system going to them. I know landscape fabric isn't ideal but my dad won't get rid of it.
Ive noticed less rain so far this spring (7b MD). In fact its been 2 weeks or so without even a drop of rain. Usually its very humid and wet, so less fungal issues, which is nice but i seem to have let my cornus florida recently planted go too long without water (soil seemed moist when i tested with finger) and now the leaves are turning red/orange!!! 😱
I have clay dirt and no matter how much i try to airate it still becomes very hard very quickly. What is the best soil amendments do u recommend to keep it lose for drainage and air to get into it. I am scared i am going to lose all my hostas and other plants, because my bulbs are rotting faster than i can fix the soil. PLEASE HELP! Thank you
Add as much organic material as possible then add more. Dry leaves, compost, lawn clippings. I highly recommend deep mulch and "no till" gardening. I've collected hundreds of bags of leaves over the years to put on my hard soil as mulch and it's made a big difference!
Definitely keeping the ground covered by a nice mulch (like Carla said, mulch could be bark, compost, leaves, things that break down and add organics to the soil) will help prevent the sun from baking the clay. Consistent mulch and time will create that rich, forest-like soil.
How big? They’ll flower on new growth so if they’re massive I would personally cut them to a reasonable height and let them them flower during summer at a height that I want.
@@cristinanderson4767 are they blooming? I’d go ahead and prune them myself, you might delay the blooms a bit but if the height is bothering you then get them in check.
@@anitahadley2871 not blooming yet but they have a lot of fresh stems. We cut it back but left some tall for the flowers. The plan is to let it flower the do a big cut back. Would that help? Thanks for responding
I’m off with its head the first prune then Steph’s approach the rest of the season. I had planned to prune my asters but they’re blooming right now. Not sure what that means for fall.
My daylily’s have been hit hard this year. I found little white insects on them. Maybe whitefly???? But when I looked they were also loaded with ladybug larva. So I pulled all the dead leaves out to give more airflow and deadheaded them. Fingers crossed they make it. I think they need to be thinned??? I will do that next spring if they make it. Raleigh, NC
I had the same exact issues with my daylilies this year! My daylilies are twenty years old and never had aphids before. The daylily aphids will shed their skin and it looks like white flies. It was painful but what I did was allow the ladybugs to do their cleanup. Took them several weeks but now they are clean again...a bit battered looking but clean. After they flower I am going to cut all their leaves off in the fall. Now my John Clayton honeysuckle is suffering with them. Been a strange year for aphids in my garden! Good wishes to you.
For those of us with stranger senses of humor, I'd love to see some "Off With It's Head" t-shirts. (:
Yes 🤣 I'm the same way lol

I could listen to you talk plants all day long.

Fantastic video. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I want buy a plant without searching your videos first.
I’m with Team Steph when it comes to pruning technique 🌸🐝

Always enjoy these monthly checklists
I love your garden!! It’s one of my absolute favorites and since I’m in 8b, I can grow most of what you grow!!! Thank you for sharing ❤
You are so loaded with great tips for gardeners!!!! Thanks as always!!!
🪴🌳YOUR GARDEN IS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING‼️🌳🪴

Your gardens look so naturally healthy! 👍
Love love love all the chartreuse color throughout your garden
Probably reaching the point of overkill 🤣.

Nevermind I hadn't watched the entire video and heard him say it's a redbud. Not familiar with that one. Just the redbud tree
I love your little frog statuary on the steps!!!
cute rabbit at 03:41. They must love your vege garden :)
Holly is so cute! I loved seeing her behind you as you're sitting on your steps. Lol! Beautiful garden! Someday ill get there!

Congratulations on 200,000!🍾🎊🥳
June! Wow. I thought the season would never get going this winter when the arctic blast fried any evergreen foliage we had.
Congrats on 200K
Great information as usual. We just got back from Ireland, the Blarney Castle gardens are beautiful.
Lots of great info! Thanks so much Jim & Steph
Thanks Jim.🌷💚🙃
Hey Jim, we definitely need a garden tour video. Curious to know what that red plant is in front of the redbud? #teamSteph for pruning lol
I take the Steph appproach to deadheading 😂😂
Hey, you answered a question I had. Thank you!
And love your white frog.

Two questions on watering.....
Is it OK to water at night? And is it try that foliage may burn if watered in the heat of the day with bright sunlight?
Oh yes, the birds are free pest control. I grew some cabbages and lettuce to attract white cabbage butterflies, so that I could have year round butterflies, and the birds keep eating the caterpillars. The nicest brassicas I have ever had.

Horrible time with climbing roses in atlanta…..so you recommend a good climber for our zone with a lot of blooms all season?
Hey Jim...what is that weeping tree you have to your left at 5:13? I have one of those and would like to know how to care for it. Thank you for such good informational videos!
Our nights in nj have been so cold, everything is slow going. Hopefully soon it'll kick off
I noticed a rose was perishing in the yard, when I pulled it up the roots were covered with snails and slugs. What can I do for this ?? Thanks Jim!
Any tips for dealing with grasshoppers? They decimate plants overnight it seems 😩 I have lots of birds, but they don’t seem to keep up with the grasshoppers.
Thanks for all the info. i love the empress of dogwood. Could you limb that up? I'm looking for a small tree for my garden. Thanks
Hey Jim,

@21:20 Holly is giving you the evil ear 😅
Do you have any videos about growing Japanese maples in pots?

I ran out of Espoma products this spring so I used Milorganite to fertilize shrubs….is that ok?

Do you offer houses or feeders for your bird population?
Hi Jim & Steph. Could you tell me what the chartreuse ground cover is about the 25 min mark at the base of your Loropetalum?
St. John's wort "Brigadoon"
What’s the name of that beautiful plant on his right, at 5:45? Is it a vine?
It’s a Golden Falls Redbud tree.
Yesssss!!!
Thanks for watching!
My parents just moved to a home with mature butterfly bushes. Can they cut them back now or in the fall?
Zone 7
How big? They’ll flower on new growth so if they’re massive I would personally cut them to a reasonable height and let them them flower during summer at a height that I want.
@@taylorswf23 they are 7-8 feet tall. Very woody with new growth on branches. I walked the garden with my dad and he’s very overwhelmed.
