The rock you wanted to break for that pipe, that is for if you want to manually save so the pipe at the start will bring you to that pipe so you don't have to repeat lv1, lv2 and lv 3, and the reason Nintendo did that was because the mini castle is mandatory to unlock the forward path, and will not provide a short-cut to that place if game over or save and quit. By mandatory mean using a cloud item to skip it will not work since it will not open the lock door to move forward. in World 6 the two hammer bros or a N-spade can get stuck to a single hammer brother again so it might look like a softlock but if it happen on the right side of lv5 and lv6 they have a 3 way to end the softlock, but if they are on the left of lv6 and lv5 and both lv6 and lv5 are clear, a softlock can happen again if lv4 is cleared
