When Walmart was ordered by the court to reimburse all underpaid employees, they complied by issuing checks. HOWEVER the employees were told that if they cashed the checks, they would be fired. Hence, this protest.

+marsha Eisner: This is where unions should step in. Have all employees cash the checks on the same day en masse, then file massive grievances and class action suits against WalMart for violating court orders when these employees are terminated. Also, follow up when the stores attempt to harass and discipline employees for trumped up charges. I know this is EXTREMELY difficult seeing people have to earn money to live, and being a union rep for my craft, I know management intimidation/manipulation tactics well. I very rarely shop WalMart for the fact it is SO unfriendly towards unions. Stay strong.

+Dave Denton You don't have to sell me on unions. You're preaching to the choir. I was able to retire when I did and keep my medical benefits because I belonged to a union. The people who work at Walmart obviously don't. I don't shop there or at their warehouse (read messy and poor service) grocery store.

My friend worked for walmart she was a former teacher. She didn't complain rather she works her butt off. She got promoted to department manager then 3 months later assistant manager. She went from making $11 an hour to a $42,000 dollar a year salary. If you work hard and show it you can make it to the top. Only whiners and complainers stay at the bottom or get fired.

You do know that you are only repeating what the wealthy elitists in this country want you to say, right? They like to make you feel like you are a part of some great movement, like you're making a difference. But you know what? They don't give a damn about you. They are just using you. They know that they can't be convincing on their own. Nothing is less convincing than a rich man saying that his employees are greedy when they make him all kinds of money. So they use people like you to get their message out so they can maximize their own profits.
If you opened your eyes and thought for yourself for one second, which I believe you are fully capable of doing, you would realize that you are fulfilling some rich guy's agenda to make him more money. Then you would feel used, and that's not a good feeling. Come on, don't devalue yourself. You're a living and breathing human being with limited time on this planet.
It's your choice. Stand up for workers (including yourself), or continue to view yourself as nothing more than a wage slave, and allow the elitists who don't care about you to keep taking advantage of you.
The choice is yours. Join us, or keep being used.

    • @HeyGunPeople

Sorry I live in real ville, employers have to make a profit or it is not worth employing - you can't make a profit to pay and hire employees if the all the employees think they are bosses and can make the terms on how they work or you end up with a Gov employees that sits on their ass, taking breaks, demanding things and not producing. Visit a Post Office and see why you get shit service - Gov only works since it does not make or care about profit since it is not their money spent on their ignorant policies and if they need more money they just take more with more taxes, fines and seizing other property.

In the long run even the unions are controlled why do you think Bobby Kennedy went after them ruthlessly. No the answer is and always has been in Washington. A government that is truly for the people would stand up to these national and international corporations and kick ALL of the ones out that will not follow the law of the land. Even under penalty of death. That is because the country is being bled dry now and our livelihoods are at stake! The solution now is to vote for a political party (a new one) under a new system of government that is not controlled by the two-party politic system. This party is called the National American Liberation Party--->GOOGLE THIS NAME.

@@ututheavenger I'm from latino américa, unions are like a desease , for society.
If you want a better job, study something specific with demand or build something for your own, imagine stop a national port for 3 days, damaging the economy of a nation and try to make fractures in the economy just with the intention to ruin a government, that happens here in Latam, the people who are benefited are the unions and the political parties that represent not the workers.

Secondly if people had the mentality you have unions wouldn’t exist today. Yes they are a business but businesses as stated do not have a right to treat people as if they are modern day slaves *sigh* your lack of empathy is appalling especially when it comes to basic human rights to just having a place to live, but no Walmart gets to ride rich on the backs of all those poor individuals.

Have you ever been unfairly treated at a job? I was sexually assaulted by a manager daily at my job (grabbing my ass and breasts, playing with my hair, putting his hands around my waist), and when I stood up for myself I was fired - after going to HR about it, by the way. That was at Guitar Center as a job to pay for graduate school.
I'd rather be unemployed than deal with that hell again. I say if you aren't being respected, stand up for yourself. Hearing on a daily basis how you can be replaced easily because there are so many people out of work as a way to threaten employees into compliance to horrible work standards is disgusting. If these people are on the clock, they should all be fired. If they are off the clock they should be arrested for disrupting the store, and then they should be fired. Better ways of dealing with issues than trying to embarrass the company. No I do not work for Walmart or any other department store. But I can tell you one thing, if I had owned this store I would have pulled the fire alarm and shut the doors on the place!!!! I could have recruited a whole new crew of people who have earned respect. Too many times I have been in stores and fast food places where the customers and the owners/management were being trashed horribly. You don't want to be there, find some other place to work or get an education and start your own business. But have some integarty in yourself and your public behavior.

+Z Tonner Wow. Ok, first you spelled college wrong. Also, scholarships don't just happen because someone "studies hard and gets good grades" they are actually very difficult to get.Plus, getting enough financial aid is also difficult because it is based on gross income not net. That means before taxes are taken out. The the other thing, the job market in a lot of places is very low, even people with degrees have a difficult time finding a job in their degree field. Everyone has to make a living somehow, so some end up taking jobs at places like Wal-Mart just so they can earn enough money to keep a roof over their heads and put food on the table for their families. Just because someone works somewhere like Wal-Mart does not mean they are uneducated. Maybe you should consider all the facts before you judge someone based solely on where they work.

I didnt watch the video because awkward.
    but.
Walmart does indeed need unions. Walmart treats people like absolute dirt. When I got hired I was amazed how they talked to people like they were children incapable of making decisions for themselves. They talk down on people, push them to their limits, stress them out, force them to work in unhealthy conditions, and still are never happy with you. You may be hired for a morning shift and suddenly they will stick you on an overnight schedule (10p - 7a) because they need you there. 2-3 weeks of you off your sleep schedule, and then they take you off before you qualify for the bump in pay. So they use you but are unwilling to pay for the usage.
People defending open door, thats a joke. The entire basis on open door relies upon the manager agreeing with you, so if they dont want to do anything they dont have to. HR is equally a joke. Theyre just there to make sure nothing that happens will cause their corporation to be involved in another lengthy lawsuit. If they know you wont be a in danger of suing them, they do nothing.
Unions need be set in place to protect the safety and mental health of the associates, because Wal-Mart doesn't care anymore. They only care for shareholders!

Hurt my back and instead of sending me to a decent doctor, they sent me to a quack and I ended up addicted to pain pills, and then they refused to pay the Dr and I had to sue. Fast forward 10 yrs, my disc began to disintegrate. Surgery is not an option. I'll be in a wheelchair within 5 yrs. I once worked at Walmart, ONCE!. One of the first things that they teach you in orientation is a video on how they don't need a union. This underlies a fear of the unions. They dept heads and managers are constantly on the lookout for those espousing unions, and more often than not you will be negatively counseled if you attempt to start one. Workers have a right to work for a living wage. You sir, are most likely someone who complains about people on public assistance yet have no opinions on companies that have wages so low that its employees must delve into the public coffers to make ends meet.

Due to their low wages and few benefits, Walmart workers at a single 300-person Walmart Supercenter rely on anywhere from $904,542 to $1,744,590 in public benefits per year. Multiply that by the number of Walmart Supercenters around the United States. This is what commercial accountants call "externalization of costs." That is, moving costs off Walmart's balance sheet onto YOUR balance sheet.

They are bullies and nothing more.
You have a right to strike, and your boss has a right to fire you or discipline you for it.
You do not have a Natural Right to work any where.
You do not have a Natural Right to unionize.
Stop using the term "rights" as though you know what it means.

    • @rfburnhertz
      @rfburnhertz 10 років тому

It isn't a right... rights are not created out of thing air. Laws are created, regulations are created... bureaucracies are created.
Even at that, of course Walmart or any other business can refuse unionization through several methods. Some of these methods of course may end in huge fines or a business closing.
None of the above means it is a right.
All of that however misses the bigger point.
You do not have a RIGHT (in the true sense of the word) to force others (be it an individual or a business) to behave as you want them to, or to give you a bigger slice of the pie you suppose they have possession of.
      You are not entitled.
You may feel entitled... but you are not.
They law may be your hammer and force the other to do as you wish, that does not make it right.
In the end, it is wrong, period.
No matter what the Gov or its agencies say.
Its also foolish and damaging to yourself, the business and the community around you.
      Small picture... you win.
Big picture... you screw yourself and others.
Bigger picture, if you engage in this crap, you're a punk. A tiny tyrant.

      I'll fight that.

OK, couple of thoughts here folks. I have a few friends who either worked or their wives worked at Walley World and you know what, after couple years, they were well above minimum wage and had benefits. No, they were not management, but after five years, one did work her way up to that point. Look, Walmart is a starter job or, one for a retired person who wants something to do. Its not a full time, pay all your bills job. I do feel for these people but as a consumer, Walmart and Target are cheaper on their products. We see what unions do to business, jack up prices, cause lay-offs and eventually, close the doors cause its too expensive to hire people. Has to be a happy medium. If walmart and flipping burgers is your idea of a full time raise a family job, you need to go back to school.

Dude... Blah blah blah.... It's NOT just Walmart or McDonald's. Nor can you oversimplify and say that Walmart is a "Starter Job" because it isn't. It's ALSO a job for the uneducated. Simply put.... Minimum wage needs to be at least $15 an hour to be able to keep up with inflation.

A study of the last 30 yrs will show how wages have not kept up with inflation, whether it's gas, rent, groceries, clothing etc...the STAPLES of survival. Corporate greed and mismanagement are huge contributors. Instead of coming up with a better product or better marketing and a better business plan with less corporate fattening, the easiest way to make a profit is buying cheaply overseas and getting away with treating employees like slaves. Profit at all costs is costing working people their standard of living. Once the bastion of the free industrialized world envied by all, the United States now falls far behind most European countries in quality of life. Where once you were entitled to a two week vacation every year, now you're threatened with job loss....in parts of Europe including Germany, Finland etc...it's MANDATORY 4-6 weeks vacation per year. An employee is an asset and needs to be given motivation through reward, not fear. And thank you corporate America for being a sellout and buying overseas and shutting down factories and creating the state of the economy as we know it. The more dependent you are on other countries the easier it is for you to fail and fall, it's not about get an education and a job and provide better for your family...because even that is being farmed out to visa'd workers or customer service centers abroad. America needs to get back in the game of manufacturing and save itself.

String Slinger the ruling class don't care about using the carrot anymore, they use the stick instead. Unemployment and poverty is deliberately cultivated to serve as a deterrent against strikes and workers asking for better pay and conditions. • @PkmnLegendMaster

I've been noticing a lot of stories about 'go work elsewhere' Let's run some numbers shall we? Walmart employs 2.2 MILLION workers. It's the LARGEST retail chain in the world. That being said, it's obvious that losing the store would cause a great deal of jobs to be lost, and in incredibly short times. Better to have a job than not right?
HOWEVER, as a former employee of the company, I've experienced their tactics first hand. At the time, it was the only place I could find work. However, their managers are able to freely disrespect their employees. I recall a manager that called a woman into the office, and degraded her so much that she was in tears for the rest of the shift. He also called me in and said that I was 'the worst employee in the store' and considering I did the work of 3 employees, that's idiocy. (Pulled out the freight, stocked coffee, tea, condiments, all the various snacks, brought freight back to the back, AND usually had time to help out other employees. I usually unloaded 12-15 Pallets of supplies a night.)
Another employee I knew was fired to 'sleeping in the backroom' which in that walmart is one of the most idiotic things I've ever heard. There's employees constantly shuffling about in extremely thin walkways and crazed activity as the crew is severely understaffed. He'd have to be able to fall asleep in about 2 minutes standing up... WHILE he was working in a loud environment. Call me a doubting Thomas if you want, but that seems a bit closer to impossible than possible.
Anyway, regardless of that, after I found out about him harassing associates, I filed an ethics report against him. Two weeks later, I was fired. If you make any waves, they CAN and WILL fire you. If you have a good job, then you wouldn't be working at Walmart, but if you can't get hired anywhere else (too old, injured, etc) then you can't afford to do anything but avert your gaze.
But, getting fired turned out to be for the better. My next job was at a Target store that was a bit more than half the hours, but paid almost double what Walmart did. They also treated their employees with dignity and respect. Two things Walmart NEVER did.
