5 Marathons in 5 Days - Day 1. Running a Marathon on Double Antibiotics due to a Tooth Infection!

- For my next big challenge I decided to run 5 marathons in 5 days... Unfortunately the lead up to this challenge has been less than ideal! First I had soft tissue damage in my left ankle when it swelled up after running long back-to-back runs. While resting from this injury I suffered an impact trauma to my right heel. This meant I hadn't really run at all in the 5 weeks leading up to this event with It's Grim Up North! Longest taper anyone?!
I then had a root canal done, which got infected, and the day before the event started I had to call 111 as I couldn't cope with the pain. The antibiotics I was taking weren't working so I was given a second lot of antibiotics and a lot of pain killers! I was not feeling like running a marathon. But this event meant a lot to me and I love pushing myself out of my comfort zone, so I arranged an early start with the team and set off early to see if I could run a marathon while feeling absolutely terrible and while in a lot of pain! This video tells the story of Day 1 of my 5 in 5 challenge.

Just starting to watch your 5 in 5. Definitely my favourite videos are you doing crazy distances (don't tell Poppy). I'm 6 months out from an infection/root canal so I cringed a lot feeling your pain girl!!! Always love when Hillary shows up too. ❤
Honestly I had absolutely no clue how bad that pain can be. No clue at all... Literally unbearable 😭 Hope yours is all sorted. Mine is pain free but was so bad I'm still waiting to have it filled 🤦🏻♀️
Wow, you're incredible, Nicola. You never fail to motivate me to get my trainers on and get running. To think, I was gonna pull out of a race because I've not had adequate training 😅 I'm gonna be more like you and keep pushing Forwood!
Awww thanks, look after yourself and be prepared to pull out but yeah... If you don't toe the start line then you definitely can't do it but if you give it a go then... Maybe you'll surprise yourself! 😃
This is really inspiring, Nicola. Well done under trying circumstances. Just wish you could have had a little sneak peek at the end of the 5th day before starting this one, as it might have helped to be assured that yes, you would finish all 5 days.
Ooh a time machine would make things like this SO much easier! 😃🤣 But yeah I know what you mean. I was so full of self doubt on Day 1! 😳
Hillary ❤
Antibiotics can make you quite spaced out plus pain fatigue x
I love veggie bacon so much... I too was ecstatic when I discovered it x
@@emmarunyeard6832 she's just awesome isn't she! 🥰
What an inspiration! Many would of pulled the plug 🔌 5 marathons in 5 days 😯 I couldn’t even do my first single marathon due to injury 😢
Well done and good luck!
I'm so sorry you had to miss your first marathon 😞 that must have been gutting! I had no clue if I could do this or not but I was definitely always going to try 😃
Good girl , please dont hurt yourself :) Sorry i missed your last couple of videos was busy with stuff 😊
Hope all is well with you ☺️ I'll try my best to look after myself 🤗
I can't tell you how impressed I am that you continued to take this on with that nightmare build up; your attitude to your setbacks is amazing. Yesterday I did a 100km cycling sportive on the back of virtually no training and felt chuffed (as well as completely spent!) to get round and now I'm having a day off to recover, but your achievement here is putting this in perspective. All power to you - I will be rethinking my "mental game"!
Thank you 😊 Sounds like your mental game is bang on! Get out of your comfort zone, give it a go when the odds are against you, you nailed it! Congratulations on your ride 😃
Starting on your own on a 5in5 is so tough especially with everything else going on. Looking forward to your progress during the week. You are SO determined!
Thanks David 🤗 I must admit I quite enjoy operating in that space where I feel like I'm doomed to fail. It's like an extra challenge 🤣
A great run and event. I love Grim Up North running events. They are so well organised and do the best medals. Hats off to all the Marshalls. Especially the lady he sits down with a book.
Their medals are awesome! I love them! The GRIM team are ace! Always super supportive 🤗
Wow nicely done Nicola. So happy for you and I saw your time on Strava and it was certainly respectable. I don't do well on any sort of meds, painkillers and antibiotics, my body just throws fits with them. I think you mentioned amoxicillin and that stuff is the death of me. Definitely on board with a Coke but not sure my stomach would tolerate the other pastries. That is so cool about having a vegetarian bacon sandwich too... I made vegetarian BLTs for myself. I wouldn't have expected that type of food for what looks like a fairly small race. Can't wait to see the next installment. Your videos always cheer me up
Thanks Eddie. Yeah the combination of antibiotics and painkillers did give me stomach pain and a bit of an upset stomach which I'm not used to but it was nothing I couldn't cope with and certainly nothing that caused a problem when running thank goodness! I must admit I was worried! I think I have a lead lined stomach 🤣🎉🎉🎉
Oh and yes, the team at GRIM definitely go above and beyond when it comes to post race fuelling 😋
Nicola you're an inspiration - the ankle, the heel, the root canal, the pain... and you just get out there and do it anyway! Amazing - looking forward to the next instalment.
Awww thanks, compared to some of the things I've gone through then physical pain is relatively easy for me to shut off... But the tooth pain came pretty close to breaking me! That's the first time I've called 111 in my life! I'm just so happy I made it through that first day! 😃
Great effort Nicola, the NHS pulling through when it matters! Based on what you're saying about pain levels, it's amazing how much smiling you're doing here. I'd be cursing the world if it was me!
You're one tough cookie, an especially sweet one with all that sugar 🙂
Thanks Richard 😊 I think the second I stop smiling the pain feels worse though so it was like my medicine 😃
Great vid Nicola. What an inspiration!
Thank you so much Andy, that's so kind of you to say 🤗
Fantastic stuff Nicola, really well done in the midst of everything going on. Loved the transition from calling 111 for an emergency dentist to a list of foods that would send a dentist into a cold sweat in 24 hours. Loved the self-refernce to yourself as a 'youth' too 😂
Lol well I'm less than half Hilary's age but then I was like... Wait... I think youth is a step too far 🤣🤣🤣 Yes I was thinking that it wouldn't be a surprise if the rest of my teeth hated me! 😳😂
Aww hurty tooth, hugs! I know that feeling. Not nice. Aww but veggy bacon butty yum. Thanks for sharing.
Oh no! I'm so sorry you know this feeling! It's horrendous! But yes... Yummy post race food 🎉🎉🎉
Amazing Nicola.
Blimey .Running with a infected root canal.
I know what that feels like.
Hopefully your feeling better now.
Thank you, it was an awful week, I kept thinking it was getting better and it wasn't! I went straight to the dentist after I finished this challenge! 🤦🏻♀️🤣 All better now than goodness! ☺️
I say similar about Gareth’s place. If I wanted to spend lots of money on a posh home I wouldn’t want walkers walking past virtually every day!
I know right?! It's busy there all the time! Weekends are madness! 🤦🏻♀️ It would drive me insane 🤣
I am flabbergasted. My gast has never been more flabbered. I confess, I thought you had no chance with that tooth. But that run was awesome. Wishing you the best of luck. 🍀
Thank you! I must confess I thought I had no chance either! Hence the early start. I honestly thought my strategy would have to be to run a mile, then walk until the pain in my head subsided, then try another mile etc. But the second antibiotics worked really quickly and I think adrenaline of being in it all and the endorphins from running managed to get me through! 🎉🎉🎉
This! ❤❤❤ You are an inspiration and you are such an awesome role model for Poppy... Huge virtual hug xx
@@emmarunyeard6832 awww thanks Emma ❤️❤️❤️
Great video Nicola & well done!
Chocolate Bourbons are a top tier biscuit! 😋
Thank you, oh my goodness those biscuits were AMAZING! 😋
Nicola you are such an amazing person and so determined and was this one of your hardest marathon and I always like your videos. When your videos out next
Thanks as always 😊 I'll get editing and release it when it's ready... Maybe a few days but it's the Easter holiday so I'm pretty busy 🙃
Good start in tough conditoons look forward to seeing the other days
Thank you, I just finished editing Day 2 🤗
Well done, Nicola 🎉 you are a great inspiration, especially given the circumstances ☺️
Thanks Karen, honestly who knew that tooth pain could be so awful?! I had literally no idea! 😳😳😳
Great job Nicola👏👏 Definitely no such thing as too much brownie 😂
Thanks! Yay! This was my conclusion too 🤣🤣🤣
well done and good news from this end Heaton park half marathon i managed to do it non stop in 1h54 coming home in 127th out of 394 runners in total there where 971 runners in all race distances it was lovely and sunny Run Though events and Grim up north are the best for races hope to do Lancaster 20 miler in September this one is flat so hope to to really train up for it

@@matthewlee3313 ?
@@NicolaRuns will you do one with me
@@matthewlee3313 sorry I've no clue what you're talking about 🙃
Looks like a very picturesque place to run. Not sure I could run that far even if I didn't have toothache 😂. 10k is my limit these days. The knees just don't like it. Good luck with the rest of the week.
Thanks, yes I don't think I could do it if I didn't love where I was. I adore reservoir runs, especially in Yorkshire 😍
You take care of yourself, you push too hard. Weather was awful in Peaks as well, spent a week in our caravan never even put the awning up xx
It's been miserable hasn't it! Soooooo windy and rainy! I'll be careful I promise 🤗
👍👍
Hot cross buns do not need jam!
But jam makes them sooooooo much better! Obviously hot from the toaster dripping in butter is best but I didn't have a toaster on me 😜
Another brave run. Have you ever worked out how far you have run in ParkRun? Again, well done.
Thanks 😊 If you Google 'prapp' and put in your number of parkruns then it tells you! From memory mine was like 79 marathons or something 😃
Oh what a place to run.. Beautiful, up north looks gorgeous x
@@emmarunyeard6832 I definitely entered these because they are beautiful places to run 😍😍😍
