When the Magna Carta was signed in 1215, and during most of Notre Dame Cathedral's construction, no humans lived in New Zealand. There's something existential about that... And meanwhile just a two-hour flight away in Australia, humans were living there before they were in Europe.
Not in love with your use of "existential" but I totally get what you're going for and it is very interesting to think about. Pretty good... though in WWI we didn't just hang around the islands. We got together with the Australians & formed the ANZACs - the Australia-New Zealand-Army Corps. With them we participated in a major offensive in Turkey, storming the beaches in a place called Gallipoli. On April 25th we have a national holiday called ANZAC Day in which we commemorate all those lost to war, but particularly focuses on the Gallipoli campaign. I agree
It’s either mou-ari or mouri pronunciation wise. imo
I agree 100%
When he said the pronunciation for Māori and the last one that he said Wasn't how you pronounced, it sounded the most correct!
I will still spell it as maorey;)

Kia ora from a Maori in New Zealand. You did an awesome job of explaining our beautiful country. Love that you made mention of Zealandia also. Nga mihi nui.
I also like thinking the absolute cultural isolation of Aboriginal Tasmanians and other groups like them around the world. Imagine walking to a new land and then generations later having the sea rise so that your entire population is isolated for thousands for tens of thousands of years.
Hey man, sorry to say but it's 1200 BC not 1200 AD when the Polynesians arrived. So yeah, Europe was still in the Bronze age and 2400 years off signing the Magna Carta.
@@Harry-ez8do nope, Maori arrived to New Zealand only at circa 1300AD, he was right
@@shaulpagis-sharon4484 Sugar, yup I just searched it up and you're right. I got mixed up with Polynesian expansion into the pacific. Thanks for clearing that up!

Also, the name new Zealand comes from the province called " Zeeland" in the netherlands
Drawing attention to the Netherlands again? They had their moment of glory already (see previous episode).
@@PuzzleQodec I mean...it's still both true and relevant.
@@levischorpioen Oh I agree, but as it was mentioned in the previous video already, I can understand why they're not mentioning it again. I feel like it would already be exaggerating our (Dutch) role in New Zealand history.

It's a myth that Chinese had brought a lot of properties in NZ and caused the properties prices to shoot up. NZ properties were open to international buyers, and Chinese make up a small percentage. In fact, the biggest percentages of properties buyers come from Australia and Great Britain respectively.
I really like that the Kiwis of European heritage adapt the indigenous culture. Not something you see very often around the world
yes but no
Not really, if you think some dancing is what culture is then read some more. Europeans still brought civilization to them, a written language, values, arquitecture, etc, just like everywhere else
@Kj_mast_er our culture is what you see around you, you're just passing by
@Kj_mast_er more like when you learn how to write and read.

April 25th is the day we lay wreathes and wear poppies to remember our fallen.
