Please don't ever put yourself down for the way you look, or the way you talk, or anything else. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with your looks, and the "mistakes" you say you make while talking? I was just thinking that you were a pleasant guy with a sense of humor. Only a rude idiot would have anything bad to say about you or the way you talk. Normal people are going to see what I see. Things like that are what makes people enjoyable to be around, and remember--none of us are perfect, and the most beautiful, well spoken people have those who will still find a reason to put them down. So disregard those kinds of people who will speak against you, as their opinions are worthless.

This was really helpful. I have built somethings out of MDF and now am having fun finishing them. This answered my question about whether I shoudl use glue + water or shellac to seal it. Looks like shellac is the way to go.

Leonardo Reyes Thanks! I think shellac will be a good finish for an outfeed/assembly table. It is pretty durable, allows things to slide when kept smooth, and should prevent glue from sticking. And it is easy to refresh later by buffing with some denatured alcohol and then adding a fresh coat. Good luck!

Man...so helpful! Just completed my workbench with MDF top and wanted to make sure the shellac wouldn’t swell but want the top protected some. Loved the “...uhh, beer...” comment HAHA. Great video Russ, preciate ya.
Shellac is the best for sealing MDF edges. I have spent years sealing MDF with water based MDF sealers but they are nothing compared to Shellac. With just one light coat shellac will seal edges and you can paint them after it dries. Not sure why you are worried about something being water based and swelling. Most of MDF primers/sealears are water based.

I don't know who in the hell you allow in your life that made you feel that you are not pleasing to look at, but you need to get them the F*@# out your life. I was hoping to use wallpaper with some kind of protective coating for the risers and possibly stain or paint the MDF treads . have reservations about painting as I am concerned about it wearing well.....But in general, could shellac or perhaps something else be used to protect a stained or painted surface which has that footfall?

Hey @russhaynes I bought some furniture for my bedroom and only after I learned that particle board continuously off gases. I was looking into ways to seal it if possible to stop the off gassing. Do you have any tips? And is shellac the best option? Thanks!
Do you have any experiencing painting over shellac? I accidentally stripped the laminate off a dresser top and am left with the thin MDF sheet, so I used shellac to seal it, then painted it but the MDF is absorbing the paint and showing that grainy texture and feeling which suggests to me that I didn't seal it enough. Can I add a layer of shellac then continue painting? Maybe even layer? Trying to get the dresser top to be wood like or at least smooth and not MDF looking.

Your speaking was fine. Just don't ever say "heith" when referring to "height" and everything will be good. LOL I actually decided on using MDF as a sacrificial table top for by bench-mounted radial arm saw...two coats of shellac worked out well.
Ok hi. I’m a Girl. And I don’t know a lot of wood stuff yet. And I have no friends. But anyways. Say I use this SHELLAC stuff for all this MDF I bought for $10 a 4’x8’ .. sheet thing. Each. Yeah day I SHELLAC it & then… like.. do I need to use only a certain kind of paint over the SHELLAC or am I pretty much good to go on any kind of paint I want to paint over itv
Oh. & also… say I … SHELLAC’d & painted the MDF & then painted it… what if I just… threw a full open beer at it? Or splashed a big cup of water on it… what would happen? And oh. They say that MDF isn’t very good with holding screws & stuff in it.. well.. ok. Do you know of a better way to… connect pieces of Mdf together that isn’t screws? Or .. Is it because screws are metal? Then… why don’t they just invent like… WOODEN SCREWS…. But the more like WOODEN BOLTS… with the little nut thing to secure it on the other end or… nevermind that idea. Umm. But wooden nails.. or wooden nails.. do they have those? Would that be.better for MDF? And…. What do you think it’d be like if I … built an entire 15ft wide garage well with … a whole full wall of different height cabinets/counter tops some over head cabinets/some desk or counter tops (like 2), drawers &.. some empty space under the table tops to roll a pull Out work bench I make under it when I’m done with it to save space. If I mix in an actual piece of real wood & there & build it on a pressure treated based foundation …. Would MDF be suitable for a wall of storage & function use?

Does the shellac raise the 'grain' of the mdf ? (ie fibers swelling, as when you use acrylic paint)
