I've watched video after video over the past year and a half and I still can't get much farther than 300 feet on my best drives. But I just practiced throwing indoors using a towel after watching this video, and I can feel the added power immediately! I'm 215 lbs and fairly muscular for my age, so I know that if I get my weight behind the throw, I should be able to throw it way longer than I am throwing it now. This video clarified many things for me. Rotating hips with my arm is exactly what I have been doing for years. Now I need to find good exercises to unlearn that bad habit!
Such a big help! My friends taught me how to play and unfortunately taught me that a strong fast arm is the key to big distance. Being a 5'2" female, that had me maxing out at ~175 ft. I've been doing hip drills for two days and am already at 230 ft consistently. With more practice and better timing, I hope I can hit 300 this year!

Ben. That was genius. For a trillion years I have hit and thrown with that exact hip principle through the power pocket release quick snap smooth follow through. Only I was hitting a tennis ball with a stickball bat pin straight 300 feet down a narrow side street. Played a ton of ball over a few decades and then golf and now I have been disc golfing half a year. You just reminded me of the one thing I have had all these years and yet have been missing on most of my drives. It is exactly the same concept. Gonna focus on that tomorrow AM on the course. Its all in the hips. Its all in the hips.

Been stuck at 300'-320' for 2 years now. I've tried so many different tips and this is the only one that has actually made a difference. Still getting the hang of it (accuracy is down), but distance is definitely up. Hole 1 at my home course is a 300' moderately uphill drive that I've always been short on. I finally got within putting range. This is definitely going to be hard to master, though.

As someone who played golf competitively, and knows how to hit the ball with power, there's a lot of parallels between a golf swing and disc throw as far as using your hips, pulling through with some lag to generate the most power. I just had a tendency to keep my arm straight, which you do want with a golf swing, but not with a disc throw as it caused rounding and made it impossible to time my throw right. Pulling through the power pocket is where it's at, and practice.
Your explanation of why some athletes can naturally throw further than I can after playing for so long (looking at you Brody) makes so much sense. Thank you for this video, I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that this video is a huge gift to the amateur disc golf scene. Subbed

@@BensBigDrive The field work didn't go as expected, however I reached the same lengths I did previously (260 feet with a midrange) with a lot of less effort, or at least that's what it felt like. Going to need to practice this a lot more to unlearn the muscle memory of previous timing, but I think it's definitely going to improve my game in the long run. Thanks again :D
aaaand now I figured out why my lower right back hurts after throwing "far" (100m, or ~330ft). I use my hips, but really just throw with my arm. All of the energy from my hips are stopped by my front foot. I have a wicked slapshot in ice hockey, can throw a baseball pretty fast, and all of that power comes from the legs (or the hips), so this makes perfect sense. Thank you!
You caught me with the hook on this video. I have been practicing general form at the soccer field for a couple of weeks, watching videos, studying pros. Yesterday I downloaded Udisc just to see how much distance I could get through a standstill cause I thought I was making progress and I threw a dinky 235ft. I knew I wasn't getting enough force through my lower body so found this video and now I feel I've got another good starting point to go and hit the field with again. Here's wishing for a few more feet! I've got a personal mission to hit 300 from a standstill before I go play my first round. Thanks for the video! Robbie isn't that great of a coach, not to mention a huge phoney. I don't know if you remember but he had a video where he asked for people that wanted help with their form to reach out. I think cool. So I grab some footage and slowed it down. Contacted him, he responded nice enough. Told him I could use some help with my form and sent him the video. He sees it almost immediately, says nothing. 2 days later I message him and say, what do you think? He replied back, are you looking for a form critique? I think to myself, that's what you called out for in your video, what we talked about, and why I sent a video. But I said, yeah, I could really use some help. He replied with something like, "looks like you're shifting incorrectly" I asked what drills I should do etc. He saw and never responded to the message. This is one reason I don't like to interact with people I like/admire on UA-cam, insta etc cause they're never what they appear to be. I really thought he was going to jump in and really try to help me. Only in retrospect, to realize, he's trying to cultivate this really friendly, great guy image to sell his channel, but it's not who he really is

I was a thrower in high school for track and field the first thing we ever worked on was getting in that stance where your arm is all the way back getting ready to lead with your hips. However, we would turn our ankles first. This creates even more tension in your hips and accelerates them faster forward. Just getting back in that stance and holding it while you turn your ankles and feel the tension building in your hips helps. Then adding bring the hips through, then adding the release. Once we mastered each step we brought it all together and would throw our shot or discus. It’s great help. Work on the ankle turns and hopefully you see how it helps and make a video on it.
Big Ben- You're mostly correct in your explanation, especially when I consider how I've watched pros try to explain this and are completely wrong... and I mean completely wrong. So I'm impressed with how you have discovered what you have, simply by watching videos and having no formal training. However, understanding the combination of ground forces, and rotational forces and the timing of them in kinesthetic power movement is a lifetime of work. You do understand that hips lead the swing, however, you do not yet understand the difference between passive hip rotation and explosive ground force rotational movement. The latter generating as much as 5x more rotational speed. Hard to explain, without showing you. All this to say, there's still way more for you to gain. You are on the right track, you seem to be a fantastic human being! Keep learning!!
Thousandth like. Your comparison video showing the disc lag is on point. Your explanation for how to achieve it is too. Spin and throw disc golf posted a video analyzing Donaldson's swing, and Donaldson also says to keep hands and arm muscles relaxed while engaging the hips which is the same conclusion you came to. Nice work!
I've been throwing for a couple months now and have watched pretty much every disc golf video on youtube. I was still only getting around 180' maybe 200' on a good day. It was becoming frustrating. I watched this video and went out next day. This video put it all together. My throws increased by a hundred feet almost instantly, AND a big plus, my shoulder doesn't hurt.
Best thing I can tell anyone in addition is to understand full flight patterns. You cannot expect to get a disc to get you maximum flight when you are not reaching the discs required speed to get a full flight. Slowing down your selection of disc can in some circumstances increase your maximum distance if you are not correctly utilizing the higher speed disc. Which I see incredibly often in people attempting to throw max distance. A 7-9 Speed disc when thrown correctly for its full flight pattern and then even you throwing it a little over speed can translate to an easy 400 foot drive. Which will show you how much potential you have for even faster discs when you can reach those speeds. 12-13 speeds should be in the 450+ range. Don't even touch them for distance if you can't get a 7 speed over 350.
EXCELLENT video. The tip at the end of holding the disc relaxed (Ricky Wysocki actually does this when he throws) to help teach your upper body to not outpace the hips - or be rotating at the same time (which I think I've been doing forever) - is pure gold. Please do a part 2 to this video talking more about getting that timing of planting right foot, opening hips, and then when to start actually snapping. I find myself having a hard time knowing / sensing the delayed timing from lower body to then when the shoulders are rotating and then your arm/elbow is snapping.

First time its been explained in a way that i feel like i understand what ive been doing wrong. I literally just tried it in my living room (no disc of course) and for the first time i felt that pocket, that sweet spot, the hit box, and so many other ways others have tried to explain it. Cant wait to put this into practice.
This was the video that finally clicked for me. I've been playing since June and just hit 362 today. Previous best was 325, so this is putting me on the right track for 400!
I hear you. I just graduated from 300-330 yesterday to 330-350 from feeling into driving my nondominant shoulder around as well and giving it some James Conrad drive exaggeration. Just drilling to feel trap tension like he points out in another of his videos in my living room, I can already feel how this will engage more whippiness potential for sure. Combined with using hips to lead shoulder rotation and noodle-arming thru the power pocket I have a good feeling about breaking 350 soon.
Great tips Ben! I love the part about slowing down. I figured that out last week and it was nice to hear someone else say it too. Now, if I can get the other parts in the relay to connect consistently... practice practice practice...
I’ve been working on form for MONTHS, and nobody could articulate how this was my problem. I went in the field after this video and literally went from 300-385’ in one hour. Can’t wait to make this a habit and get above 400’ easy! Thanks for the great video

this was the best video ive seen on how to control your body in whcih ones move first and when to use thr speed etc.. i think the last bit of perfecting will be getting the right leg straightened out instead of slightly bent at the throw
I've been playing for years and this is 100% my biggest problem. I absolutely cannot figure out how to lead with my hips. This video laid out out really well though. I'm excited to get out and practice this tomorrow. Thanks for the helpful video!
@@deadraider420 Honestly it's still not going great. I'm finding it difficult to deliberately lead with my hips in the microseconds between my plant and my throw. If I try to slow it down it looks comical and feels forced, and the disc goes nowhere. It's going to require a lot more practice.

I've just started to make a real hip turn, and that's helped a lot with distance, but I know my timing is a weakness. This "One Rule" thing made me approach with skepticism, but I think it was very well illustrated and has a lot of truth to it.
I also hate “one quick fix” vids, but I really just don’t think 400ft is possible if you’re throwing all arms (and if it is, you could be throwing so much further 😂) but thanks for the support!!!
I can't wait to practice with this in mind. What I see is you keep your shoulders turned back until you get your hips turned to parallel with your line. Paying attention to the tension in your upper arm as the trigger is a great idea.

Wow Big Ben you hit the nail right on the head on explaining the mechanics of the hips for a throw. Now I know exactly what I was doing wrong. I loved the analogy of the relay race, really to the point. Going to the field tomorrow and put those mechanics in my throws. This is such a good video! I've never really heard it explained for people who don't do it at all, just for people who don't do it right or enough. I don't know how well or how quickly I'll actually implement it, but that's on my coordination, not the lesson.

An easy way that I learned to engage the hips more is to makes sure to keep and athletic and low stance. Hip drive isn’t rotating but pushing your momentum from your back foot to your front foot while driving your hips forward. I visualized “leaning toward” my target line during the pull through which naturally forces you to shift your weight. For an rhbh think about shifting you weight like a pendulum or a swing from the left the the right and jumping forward at your line. It’s quite different from twisting or “rotating” your hips

Great video. Its all about timing. Once in a while I throw a great powerful shot but never knew what I did differently. I know its about timing but never knew how to achieve proper timing. This looks like its the key. Cant wait to try it. Thanks for the tip.
This is the hardest technique by far to learn in discgolf, and no one has ever explained HOW to actually learn it of all the vids that are out there. I feel its all about trying to learn the muscle memory, and you are the first to have given hands on advice on what to do specifically with your body and what to think of. The biggest challenge of learning this, is that people dont know what its suppose to actually feel like to try and rotate your hip before your ”relaxed” arm, that just keeps the disc in position. What muscels should you focus on to rotate the hips for example? And how can you help with your legs and feet to improve hip rotation? I feel there is more to say on this topic. Anyways, well said brother!

took me 4 years to figure this out. hoping everyone that watches this video gets it right away. it really is the one thing that makes all the difference. once you figure out how to engage your hips, you can start hitting your lines with ease and the disc just goes...and goes.
I've been working so hard on getting rid of my off-axis torque. Which I finally achieved. I can throw my putters clean as hard as I can throw! A clean pull. Low lines. It's all coming together. 400' all day. But I keep turning my whole body around and rotating my hips too far. This is exactly what I needed to improve my game. This is how I get to 500'! Thank you so much!

I actually bought my first glow discs for that same reason lol. Always feeling relaxed and eager to throw late at night.

All of the energy from my hips are stopped by my front foot. I have a wicked slapshot in ice hockey, can throw a baseball pretty fast, and all of that power comes from the legs (or the hips), so this makes perfect sense. Thank you!

I have been practicing general form at the soccer field for a couple of weeks, watching videos, studying pros.
Yesterday I downloaded Udisc just to see how much distance I could get through a standstill cause I thought I was making progress and I threw a dinky 235ft.
I knew I wasn't getting enough force through my lower body so found this video and now I feel I've got another good starting point to go and hit the field with again.
Here's wishing for a few more feet! I've got a personal mission to hit 300 from a standstill before I go play my first round.

Robbie kind of touched on this concept with the "second gear" on the pull through. This is a solid explanation on how it works, great stuff.

I don't know if you remember but he had a video where he asked for people that wanted help with their form to reach out.
I think cool. So I grab some footage and slowed it down. Contacted him, he responded nice enough. Told him I could use some help with my form and sent him the video. He sees it almost immediately, says nothing. 2 days later I message him and say, what do you think?
He replied back, are you looking for a form critique?
I think to myself, that's what you called out for in your video, what we talked about, and why I sent a video.
But I said, yeah, I could really use some help. He replied with something like, "looks like you're shifting incorrectly"
I asked what drills I should do etc. He saw and never responded to the message.
This is one reason I don't like to interact with people I like/admire on UA-cam, insta etc cause they're never what they appear to be. I really thought he was going to jump in and really try to help me. Only in retrospect, to realize, he's trying to cultivate this really friendly, great guy image to sell his channel, but it's not who he really is
I really like the concept of a second gear, it's all about engaging and adding power at the right time rather than all at once. And Robby is the man!!

I was a thrower in high school for track and field the first thing we ever worked on was getting in that stance where your arm is all the way back getting ready to lead with your hips. However, we would turn our ankles first. This creates even more tension in your hips and accelerates them faster forward. Just getting back in that stance and holding it while you turn your ankles and feel the tension building in your hips helps. Then adding bring the hips through, then adding the release. Once we mastered each step we brought it all together and would throw our shot or discus. It’s great help. Work on the ankle turns and hopefully you see how it helps and make a video on it.
Big Ben- You're mostly correct in your explanation, especially when I consider how I've watched pros try to explain this and are completely wrong... and I mean completely wrong. So I'm impressed with how you have discovered what you have, simply by watching videos and having no formal training. However, understanding the combination of ground forces, and rotational forces and the timing of them in kinesthetic power movement is a lifetime of work.
You do understand that hips lead the swing, however, you do not yet understand the difference between passive hip rotation and explosive ground force rotational movement. The latter generating as much as 5x more rotational speed.
Hard to explain, without showing you. All this to say, there's still way more for you to gain. You are on the right track, you seem to be a fantastic human being! Keep learning!!

Thousandth like. Your comparison video showing the disc lag is on point. Your explanation for how to achieve it is too. Spin and throw disc golf posted a video analyzing Donaldson's swing, and Donaldson also says to keep hands and arm muscles relaxed while engaging the hips which is the same conclusion you came to. Nice work!

I've been throwing for a couple months now and have watched pretty much every disc golf video on youtube. I was still only getting around 180' maybe 200' on a good day. It was becoming frustrating. I watched this video and went out next day. This video put it all together. My throws increased by a hundred feet almost instantly, AND a big plus, my shoulder doesn't hurt.

Best thing I can tell anyone in addition is to understand full flight patterns. You cannot expect to get a disc to get you maximum flight when you are not reaching the discs required speed to get a full flight. Slowing down your selection of disc can in some circumstances increase your maximum distance if you are not correctly utilizing the higher speed disc. Which I see incredibly often in people attempting to throw max distance. A 7-9 Speed disc when thrown correctly for its full flight pattern and then even you throwing it a little over speed can translate to an easy 400 foot drive. Which will show you how much potential you have for even faster discs when you can reach those speeds. 12-13 speeds should be in the 450+ range. Don't even touch them for distance if you can't get a 7 speed over 350.
This info is so basic and in many form videos.

EXCELLENT video. The tip at the end of holding the disc relaxed (Ricky Wysocki actually does this when he throws) to help teach your upper body to not outpace the hips - or be rotating at the same time (which I think I've been doing forever) - is pure gold. Please do a part 2 to this video talking more about getting that timing of planting right foot, opening hips, and then when to start actually snapping. I find myself having a hard time knowing / sensing the delayed timing from lower body to then when the shoulders are rotating and then your arm/elbow is snapping.

First time its been explained in a way that i feel like i understand what ive been doing wrong. I literally just tried it in my living room (no disc of course) and for the first time i felt that pocket, that sweet spot, the hit box, and so many other ways others have tried to explain it. Cant wait to put this into practice.

I hear you. I just graduated from 300-330 yesterday to 330-350 from feeling into driving my nondominant shoulder around as well and giving it some James Conrad drive exaggeration. Just drilling to feel trap tension like he points out in another of his videos in my living room, I can already feel how this will engage more whippiness potential for sure. Combined with using hips to lead shoulder rotation and noodle-arming thru the power pocket I have a good feeling about breaking 350 soon.

this was the best video ive seen on how to control your body in whcih ones move first and when to use thr speed etc.. i think the last bit of perfecting will be getting the right leg straightened out instead of slightly bent at the throw

@@deadraider420 Honestly it's still not going great. I'm finding it difficult to deliberately lead with my hips in the microseconds between my plant and my throw. If I try to slow it down it looks comical and feels forced, and the disc goes nowhere. It's going to require a lot more practice.

I've just started to make a real hip turn, and that's helped a lot with distance, but I know my timing is a weakness. This "One Rule" thing made me approach with skepticism, but I think it was very well illustrated and has a lot of truth to it.
I also hate “one quick fix” vids, but I really just don’t think 400ft is possible if you’re throwing all arms (and if it is, you could be throwing so much further 😂) but thanks for the support!!!
I can't wait to practice with this in mind. What I see is you keep your shoulders turned back until you get your hips turned to parallel with your line. Paying attention to the tension in your upper arm as the trigger is a great idea.

An easy way that I learned to engage the hips more is to makes sure to keep and athletic and low stance. Hip drive isn’t rotating but pushing your momentum from your back foot to your front foot while driving your hips forward. I visualized “leaning toward” my target line during the pull through which naturally forces you to shift your weight. For an rhbh think about shifting you weight like a pendulum or a swing from the left the the right and jumping forward at your line. It’s quite different from twisting or “rotating” your hips

This is the hardest technique by far to learn in discgolf, and no one has ever explained HOW to actually learn it of all the vids that are out there. I feel its all about trying to learn the muscle memory, and you are the first to have given hands on advice on what to do specifically with your body and what to think of. The biggest challenge of learning this, is that people dont know what its suppose to actually feel like to try and rotate your hip before your ”relaxed” arm, that just keeps the disc in position. What muscels should you focus on to rotate the hips for example? And how can you help with your legs and feet to improve hip rotation? I feel there is more to say on this topic. Anyways, well said brother!

took me 4 years to figure this out. hoping everyone that watches this video gets it right away. it really is the one thing that makes all the difference. once you figure out how to engage your hips, you can start hitting your lines with ease and the disc just goes...and goes.
It really is so critical, it’s amazing what you can do get the disc to do when you’ve got this down!
I've been working so hard on getting rid of my off-axis torque. Which I finally achieved. I can throw my putters clean as hard as I can throw! A clean pull. Low lines. It's all coming together. 400' all day. But I keep turning my whole body around and rotating my hips too far.
This is exactly what I needed to improve my game. This is how I get to 500'! Thank you so much!
