    The SPRING IS TOO LONG. Not a gas problem. SPRING PROBLEM. Try a Tubb's flat wire AR-10 spring. It allows the BCG to come back far enough to fix all the problems. I had all the same problems, and the spring fixed it. All 308 ammo works on setting 2 with my 16" using the flat wire spring. Now I love the SFAR. Saved a good gun from being dumped.

      Well the problem in this particular case was the gas key came loose. Once I fixed that I had similar results to you although ammo Inc didn’t run. But I’ll check that spring out! I have other videos out after this one showing the problem.

    Thanks for the review! I have purchased two 16” SFAR’s. One I use with a thermal optic for night hunting predators ( setting 1 - suppressed- shooting 110gr Hornady V-Max), the other for daytime deer hunting (setting 2 - unsuppressed w/ 150gr Norma Whitetail & 150gr Remington Core Lokt)…I had initial issues with the first one, but after a break-in of a couple hundred rounds my failure to feed and bolt over bullet issues resolved themselves…On my second rifle, I sent it back to Ruger twice. The first time they replaced the barrel assembly. The second time the bolt…Now both of mine run great! It was a pain while diagnosing the issues, but Ruger stuck by me and fixed everything…I feel 100% confident in both guns for hunting, however I might want to send several hundred more down the pipe before I’d consider it 100% for a dedicated self defense rifle….Just wanted to share my experiences. Good luck to all! 👍

      @@frankopanklaric Didn’t really have much option but to send it back when I encountered a malfunction and give them the opportunity to make it right. It was not fun (especially with a firearm that I’d been so excited to get my hands on for so long). Glad they took care of my issues…I took the second SFAR out to the range yesterday for some July 4th Chitty-chitty-bang-bang and I shot about 80 rounds of 150 grain hunting ammo (3 different brands). All cycled perfectly on gas setting two! Accuracy was decent, considering it was 90 degrees out and I was shooting at a pretty fast pace. 1.5” groups (5 shot groups) are easy with decent ammo.

      I also use a SFAR with 110gr Vmax .308 rounds for varmint hunting, they work excellent on neck shots for deer too. Of course the best deer ammo to buy imo is the Hornady Superperformance 150gr SST at 3k fps box speed. But a 110gr is absolutely a great deer/self defense load, if you hit near the spinal cord like the Scapula or go for a mid neck shot it’s lights out every time.

    I'm sure glad I researched this gun before purchasing. I was dead set on buying one of these as I really liked it. But nope I'll deal with the weight of a AR10 and have much better reliability. This firearm needs to be pulled as every video I see has problems. Not good Ruger.....

  • @ShastaBean

    I entirely understand wanting everything to run flawlessly through this...before I got into handloading I bought over 70 different types of .308 rounds (none of them being the NATO 7.62 variety) and started testing each for cycling, groups, etc. Then after some thought I asked myself "what in the world am I actually trying to do??" I still like to maybe use the factory rounds as a base-test in the AR10 & bolt, but as for defense, I've settled on the Speer GD 150 gr & Hornady CD FTX 155 gr. After seeing them in gel, it seems a bit pointless as long as they cycle and aren't 9" groups. I'm going to be handloading up the 125 gr Nosler BTs and once I confirm those will run & group, will be relying on those for defense with those other 2 as backups a bit deeper in the magazine. Just a thought...if you can figure out what you want this for, and just have an ammo or two or five that runs the way you desire, maybe that's all that's needed?
    I am not even sure I quite agree with the notion that the NATO stuff is what THESE are designed to run in...as they are chambered in .308. Sure, the original AR-10s, but that's not what yours is. I might be missing something, but desiring to run the NATO, lower-power stuff seems arbitrary unless that's what your chambering actually is limited to, and on the list of those weapons? I mean technically, it's the wrong ammo for your Ruger?

    • @triggerbarPhD
      @triggerbarPhD  Рік тому +4

      I agree with your thoughts here Shasta. And actually I’m good with how it is running right now, 308 on 2 and 7.62 on 3. That seems fair to me.

  • @thesaint1517
    @thesaint1517 Рік тому +6

    Most likely if they sent a new bolt then you should have treated the rifle as new and follow the factory instructions to shoot setting three, then to setting two after so many shots and 1 with suppressor. You stated that this one was not altered and you were shooting it as it came from Ruger vs what you did before changing factory parts with third party. I have seen a few tubers changing parts and all of them have run into problems from the beginning expecting the rifle to perform flawlessly by also shooting it starting with setting two when it's recommend to use setting 3. I followed the factory instructions with mine and it performed flawlessly except for a couple of hiccups with setting one without a suppressor and that was by my on choosing. By the way, I used 308 and 7.62 ammo at setting 3 and 2 including my own handloads of 150 and 168 grains without problems.

    • @triggerbarPhD
      @triggerbarPhD  Рік тому +2

      It’s possible. But to be fair, it does not say that in the manual. That’s an internet UA-cam rumor and I confirmed that with Ruger. The manual says there is a break in period but does not direct you to use setting 3. It also says that some ammo may not run on setting 2, which it doesn’t so that’s also fair. I believ at this point the rifle is running as ruger designed so I’m good with that.

  • @chrissullins3
    @chrissullins3 Рік тому +4

    Different gas settings for different weights and brands of ammo isn't uncommon for something like the FAL. The gas setting was always a balance between doing "just enough" to cycle or too much recoil and loss of accuracy. HK roller delayed weapons don't have gas settings and despite working well with mostly everything there are weights and brands those won't cycle either. I had a batch of S&B 7.62 that didn't cycle properly in a G3 type. Some mp5s won't cycle anything other than fmj while others eat everything. Just find the mag and ammo combination on the right setting that works.

    • @triggerbarPhD
      @triggerbarPhD  Рік тому +1

      This is a great point. I think the expectation, at least mine, was that this would be similar to an ar-15 and pretty much run any ammo I try in it. But as you point out, that’s just not where these systems are at in their development.

  • @Sjordan8922
    @Sjordan8922 Рік тому +8

    I would give it a few more magazines before you start changing stuff. I understand that you have shot several hundred already, but the BCG is a main component that will smooth out as the gun is run. As specified by Ruger, setting 2 is for .308 once the gun is broken in a bit and depending on the gun (there is some variation) it may cycle 762 fine. If not, bump it up to 3. I think people are starting to realize there is a lot of variation in various ammo types so it’s a hard task to get something to cycle everything with one setting. You can get one ammo to run perfect and the next may be under or over gassed.

      Fair point and agree with all your points. This just isn’t going to be a rifle that cycles everything on every setting…like many other rifles out there. @jimlemon9159 when I first did mine I just used the aero precision adjustable gas block and a really long Allen wrench. Rifle speed makes longer adjustable gas blocks that might go through to the 15” mark. I think they make one with a 5” extension. Those are pricy but everything I’ve heard they are worth it.

    Great series, been after a light weight .308 semi since the POF Rev came out. Too much $$$ and doubts so went with their Gen4 P308. Already had an Armalite AR10 Tac18. BOTH run 7.62 Nato on their factory, normal adj. gas block settings, also run .308 with no perceptible difference. The SFAR won't do that. Ruger should have put in a bomb-proof gas block and a 1-piece machined carrier like LWRC for another $200. How about BlindSight's crack at the barrel extension port? IMO, you will continue to find the weak point over and over. Charging handle hits the stock(from Turkeys vid)? I can't make my AR's do it! By the way, how do you feel about the bolt going into battery with a loaded mag insert @6:50? If you are set on it, I do think I hear less about the 20” and the first thing I’d do is tighten every single screw to spec on the rifle. Gas key, gas block, hand guard, etc. then I’d keep checking my chamber for cracks and weird brass shavings…. Then I’d repeat at every cleaning. That’s my plan with mine…. Good luck! My SFAR experience 7.62 setting 3, .308 setting 2..suppressed setting 1.
    I think Ruger’s main mistake is in the gas block setting recommendations. Everyone who is unhappy that I have seen wants everything unsuppressed to run on setting 3. Maybe that’s not an unreasonable desire..maybe it is ..but if they just said in the manual 3 for 7.62, 2 for .308 and 1 for suppressed I think that 99.5% of people would be happy and not feel like something is wrong with their sfar. JMO. And yes I have an SFAR..and I love it..7.62 gets 3..that’s why they gave it a an adjustable gas block from the factory. How many mass produced AR platform rifles come with an adjustable gas block? Who really thinks they did it for those who run 308 suppressed? 😂 That was a hey..since we need to make it adjustable to run both 7.62 abd .308 might as well add a 3rd setting for suppressed.

    Sent in my 16" SFAR after 160 rounds and incurring failure to extract at times that became FTE every time and ripping off the rim of the case. Came back from Ruger with a new "Barrel Group" & BCG...ok whatever Barrel Group means/includes. Anyway, keep running it and no problems for several magazines, then about magazine 5 (~100rds) FTE again and no bolt hold open when loading a single round. The second round of FTEs became consistent, happening after every shot fired.
    Back to Ruger, who runs 60 rounds through it no problem.... awesome, I am now a liar. Ok, maybe some carbon was stuck in the gas system, whatever. Back to the range and it is running reliably on setting 2 for factory loads (store bought Aguila, Hornady, Federal, Sig Sauer) and my hand loads (168 Sierra TMK 43.0g Varget & 147 FMJ 50.0g CFE 223), ok good. It will run suppressed (forgot setting, sorry) with the 4 mentioned factory loads, but will NOT run on either of my hand loads. I supposed this is to be expected on a Gen 1 AR10 style rifle, but for the price and the 6.8lbs, my “know better” went out the window…. lesson learned…maybe. It’s fun to shoot now that it’s reliable (w/o my can) but a big letdown that it will only run suppressed with factory loads. Maybe in time it will loosen up, but with 400 rounds on the new barrel, I am thinking probably not.

      @triggerbarPhD  Рік тому

      Have you tried going up in pressure on your reloads ? This thing expects full power. If you are shooting lower pressure for fun with a can, I suspect it would have problems. Have you shot on setting 2 with the can? When I had problems on setting 1, it ran on setting 2. You are not a liar. I heard from them and they run 308 federal ammo. I suspect any deviation from that load and we get our issues.

      @@triggerbarPhD On my 2nd round of FTEs, it was short stroking every time, so you maybe on to something with upping the reloads. The 43.3g for my 168TMK group so well on my built .308 (1/2" groups @ 100yds w/4fps SD) I don't have the heart to chase something better, though Hodgdon shows 45.0C, so I could go a bit higher, but it shoots/cycles like a dream on my built .308 so there's that; hard to change a great load for a back up-non-precision "play rifle" when it runs so good on my precision build. My 50.0g for my 147FMJ (Armscor, I think) are just bay rounds, for a red dot setup, so I could go up to 51.5 according to Hodgdon with a 150g bullet selection. I have tried all the settings 1,2.3, up the river and back down it and my hand loads are a no go. I am a curious cat, so I think I'll bump up the charge on a small batch for both Varget and CFE223 loads to see if that does it....thanks for the suggestion.

      @@nickel8664 that’s really interesting. Would love to hear how it goes. Also have you checked the OAL difference between what runs and your factory loads? That was the problem with my hand loads. They are too long (they were purpose built for my bolt action so that makes sense). I’m sure you’ve checked this and sounds like your other rifle is an AR so maybe this is nothing but thought I’d throw it out…

    What size spring is it? The buffer tube seems just a bit longer than carbine, but not as long as rifle. And my thought was a less power spring simply because the rifle SLAMS shut. Almost like the spring is pushing way too hard. That would also cause failures to feed. Like the bolt is out running the magazine. Just a thought I had.

    • @triggerbarPhD
      @triggerbarPhD  Рік тому

      I’ve tried carbine length ones. In particular I’ve run a braided Geisele buffer spring with h, 2 and 3 springs. On setting 3 I could get all ammo running but not on setting 2.
