Hello friends! It has been brought to my attention by several comments that Plexiglas is not suitable for safety gear. In my case i use very light duty machinery but I will look into replacing the lenses. I don't want anybody to get hurt at my expanse, so please stay safe!
Your best bet is polycarbonate a common brand name for this is lexan. Acrylic shatters easily as you saw with your pliers and could throw shards of acrylic in your eyes. Polycarbonate does not shatter and will be good eye protection. Amazing and beautiful build. Best of luck in all of your ventures
What about wrapping my head with cellophane?... Uh, asking for a friend. Seriously, I like the aesthetics of this. It reminds me of old jewelers glasses for some reason. Personally, (as others have said), I'd try switching the lens with polycarbonate. But beyond that... great job!
As someone who's been glazing specs for years, this is awesome! Other comments regarding polycarbonate are correct - it's great for impact resistance. If you'd like, I could send you some lenses, uncut or shaped :)
I think this calls for carved wooden hearing protection. Shaped like large ears. Think there's too much metal being worked too often for Uri to qualify for wood elf ears, but may be wrong.
What if there was a way to add one of those custom Uri type designs where there was an add on feature for dust mask with silly false nose "Horacio" or "Pinochio" prosthetic! This would be the icing on the cake! So funny! great idea, with the "elf ears" @Nicmadis.
At first I thought you were making a funny then an hour later I got the video of him making the lathe in my reccomended. I came back to this just to let you know that lol.
Uri you are so talented and such a joy to watch but what makes your videos is your crazy sense of humor. Please don't let anyone change you. Thanks again for your videos and the smiles they bring to me.
Well, I had a welding instructor who said “you can always hold things with a prosthetic hand, and you can always stand on a prosthetic foot, but you can’t see out of a glass eye” awesome video. If I had that fine motor control, I’d make a pair. These’d make awesome sunglasses though
Hey Uri, a viewer (photozack81) suggests finding a pair of safety glasses you like and building your frames around the lenses. This sounds like a way to combine safety and art. Loved your video. You are one of the few content providers that actually make me laugh out loud. I love what you do and how you do it. Maybe if you make new polycarbonate lenses for the frames you made you could curve the front end of the side shields so they close the gap between the front lenses when opened. 👍👍
Your videos are awesome, and so are your builds! A trick I learned to get crystal clear edges after cutting plexi, polycarbonate etc is to just lightly go over the edges with a MAP gas torch. I learned it in fishtank building. It makes the edges crystal clear and will hide all the file marks.
Why in the world would anyone make their own safety glasses? I know, because you CAN and they are way cool. I love your approach to solving problems and the detail that you include. These are really nice looking safety glasses and I enjoyed watching you make them. GREAT VIDEO!!
Uri just watching you working is absolutely spectacular. so thank you for sharing your talent and putting a smile on my face. so till next time cheers from Australia.
Great work Mr Tuchman, very inspirational. If you flash the edges of the lenses with a torch flame it will finish them quite nicely. With talent like yours you could easily wrap them in brass too.
This is literally the best video I have ever watched. Thank you so much for being who you are and producing the content that you do. Ever time I see a notification that you posted a video I smile because I already know I'm going to love it :)
Nice 1930's steam punk safety glasses for the shop, I would round the glass instead, make tinted lenses for brazing or grinding. Great job on everything! Cheers!
URI IF YOU READ YOUR COMMENTS PLEASE READ THIS : You want to use Lexan, or another polycarbonate for the lenses. Plexiglass can shatter on impact sending shards of it and whatever hit it into your eyes.
🤣🤣🤣 Oh Uri. You gave me the biggest hand clapping, laugh out loud moment of my day. The wind blown, collar up, side profile, 80's music skit, just made my day. I do look forward to your videos, and not only for your extraordinary talent Blessing on you, your family (and cats) 💙
For those in the unknown what he does at the beginning is anneal the metal. You hear it to a point in which it is malleable or workable before letting it cool. It only works on certain metals but after being annealed it can be bent or sharpen once and it will retain the shape with the strength as if it was originally that way. Afterwards, you must anneal again to fix any mistakes.
Really cool. You crack me up all the time. The part when you put the sides on and your hair was blowing and the "cool tunes", hahaha hilarious. I want to try to make a pair. I'll take some lenses from a pair I don't use anymore since they are rounded.
Hello my friend, I hope you are well. What an amazing brain you have. When I look through newly uploaded or recommended videos, it's so easy to see it just has to be you. Thank you for making me laugh before I go to bed. I love your way of thinking and the humour you use in your videos. I hope to be able to watch a lot of your work. Keep enjoying the work you do my friend, I wish you well.
I actually tried that and it ended up warping the view because the heat was inconsistent, I might try again but I don't really have the right setup to make it nice and smooth.
Good idea but the second you bend it it will start distorting the light, lenses are molded in shape or ground in the case of glass. he could have 45 degree panels like old pilot goggles.
Have you ever done like a gear rundown? I think it'd be really cool to see all the different tools you have and to listen to you talk about what they all do. I'd be down for a solid hour of that, or maybe a mini-series with episode one being something like various hammers. Love your work!
There is a way to clean up the edges of the lens, you can sand them with fine sandpaper grades, I have started with 200 to 2000 which will turn those edge clear and then uses plastix clear plastic polish. Of you can burn the edges also.
They might not be the safest safety glasses, but dam are those things cool. I mean they look funny, but in a custom-made-mad-inventor kind of way. I absolutely love them
if you put affiliate links in the description for the tools and materials you use people will buy it. also offering things you make along with napkin sketch drawings would be another item to sell to help fund these videos. youre one of the best people skill wise ive seen on youtube out of the many there are that do handwork. cool channel keep goin!
There is some stuff I use to tint the plastic lenses on my hotrod...yes, American. I even did the headlights once. No good for driving at night though lol. It comes in a can, like spray paint. It starts out purple but with a few coats it ends up looking just dark tinted. It would look pretty cool if you had a set of tinted lenses. It's called Night Shades by VHT. All the cool kids are doing it lol!
At 4:40 in the video is the reason why these are not safety glasses. Acrylic can shatter. You should use polycarbonate (lexan). It is also not clear what would happen to all the metal bits in an impact. They could become shrapnel, making the problem worse.
I dont think we will be seeing Uri with jack hammers, SDS drill bits churning their way through concrete throwing chumks of debris at him. For the work Uri does, these would be ample.
“We could buy them for two dollars. So we’ll make a pair ourselves, and it won’t be as comfortable.”
I love this channel.
I love this channel too!
"but we'll be prettier" 🤣💀

Safety Squints, man... take advice from the old farts in the Northern wastelands.
Make a video testing the strength of your glasses

Uri, to be really safe make the lens out of brass my friend.
It can't hurt you, if you can't see it
@@Braeden123698745 Exactly. If you can't see it then it definitely can't see you either.

@@rulisa1131 daft as a brush, but very, very venomous...

It's amazing to think Uri also made the lathe that made this.

Uri, you are such a blessing to the UA-cam audience!! I love your videos.
Not sure about practicality, but i'm definitely sure about them being gorgeous
I’m not convinced they’re actually safe, even with polycarbonate instead of plexiglas. The coverage is a bit on the low side.
Good job Uri! As always. You are a joy to watch!
