I have really enjoyed this series. My grandmother use to garden a lot and since she has passed I do not have anyone to teach me. But seeing this series I feel a lot more confident in understanding the basics of growing things. Thank you so much for putting this information up for free. God bless.

Thanks to you I’ve started a handful of Kellogg’s Breakfast. Started mine in styrofoam cups with holes at the bottom because they will be in there for a while. Sat them in a Rubbermaid tub on a heat mat. 5 days later we got seedlings. Yay!I also started beef steak seeds. Today we got some jalapeños and basil seeds started. Next week more peppers. Doing my seed starting in phases as I prep the garden and wait on the weather to stabilize.

If you don’t have lids, I HIGHLY recommend a tube of Press and Seal. I use it for crafting too, because it sticks to anything and is reusable. Water doesn’t even make it lose its stick. It’s an incredible seedling tool.

I’m in Connecticut (6A) with snow still on the ground but I’ve started my luffa gourds, artichokes, onions, lavender and rosemary. This is my first year seed starting and I think I got a little carried away on my seed ordering...a girls gotta get through a New England winter somehow 😆. I am so grateful for your videos!! Finding your channel was like finding a gardeners treasure map LOL. I pulled my luffa gourds out of the peat pots I had them in because I had A LOT of trouble with the pot absorbing all the moisture and leaving my medium bone dry. I’m hopeful the biodegradable plant bags will do the trick 🤞🤞

9B Florida. Last frost is 3/1. I already have tomatoes, lettuce, egg plant, leek ,green beans, corn, luffa, borage, basil, kolorabi, peppers, carrots, totsoi, strawberries, onion, potatoes, garlic chive, green onions , cucumbers, cauliflower, snow peas and too many herbs and flowers for medicinal purpose to name already in ground. I started more varieties yesterday in trays. Such an exciting time for those of us who enjoy growing our own food.

I finally splurged on a 5 shelf storage unit and additional lighting. I fastened two lights on the bottom of the top 4 shelves. As I get more seedlings I work my way up the shelves. I used to only have one set that I could use on the floor, but I have quadrupled my seed starting area! I germinate on top of the frig in old cupcake baking tins, and then prick them out when they do germinate. And I reuse and repurpose things to use as seed pots. I live in central WA zone 4 and have been experimenting with new plants like peppers and annual poppies

    Heat and humidity hack...
I used a heat mat under a sterilite bin with a couple of inches of water in the bottom. I turned an old plant tray upside down and used it as a "shelf" to elevate the seedlings above the water level. The results have been AMAZING! It keeps the root zones safe from any direct heat, maintains consistent germination conditions, and allows me to germinate SO MANY seeds at once, that I only ended up using 1 of my heat mats! I check them about twice a day and almost always have something ready to move under the grow lights! It's been a serious game changer!
P.S. I imagine a fish tank heater could also be used with this setup and might even be better? :)

Great video, Brian. After many frustrating years of mediocre results starting seeds, inside or out, I finally decided to treat myself to a decent indoor seed starting setup. I AM SO HAPPY WITH IT. I'm getting great germination and I'm hoping fewer plants will succumb to cut worms if I can plant them out when they're a bit bigger. I really appreciate all the effort and research you put into your very informative videos. Thanks.

I have a new seed starting station inside and we are putting up a larger greenhouse this month. I have a bunch of trays sowed: three different types of onion seeds, petunias, four o'clocks, coleus, moss rose, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, leeks, three different peppers, 6 different tomatoes , spinach and five types of lettuce and eggplant. In the smaller greenhouse I have Swiss chard and kale growing from last winter. Yesterday I started two buckets of my russet potatoes inside the greenhouse. Taking today off but plan on sowing a tray of herbs and more flowers tomorrow.

Being in zone 6b, I started my seeds using the winter sowing method and had huge success with it. I have a small home with no room to have seedlings' containers in it. Plus, with winter sowing, there's no harding off necessary since the seeds have been outside all winter. Also - I'm reading through your Companion Planting book and making lots of notes from it into my plant diary. Your book has a wealth of information!

I’m a new sub. Great info in this series and other videos. This was my first year using peat pods and I had great results. I found store bought plastic muffin containers (mini and regular size) hold the peat pods perfectly. You close the lid until the seeds sprout, open once they do. Thanks for the time put into this series.

  • @bergfridskaaradias2071

My experience with peat pots is that they're great for seeds that sprout and grow quickly and that you don't want to pot on: cucumber, squash, pumpkins, and peas. These thrive in peat pots because they hate having their roots disturbed when being planted. Keep an eye on moisture, because the peat wicks it away from the soil. Make sure to bury the rim of the pot completely when planting, otherwise, it will wick away moisture for your plant all season.

I'm seed starting in the peat pots and repurposed yogurt cups. I'm doing 2 week rotations so all my veggies won't ripen at the exact same time.
I've already got broccoli, eggplant, and tomato growing per the local seed company instructions. Next rounds will be pepper, basil, and lettuce. We've had crazy weather in Virginia going from 36 one day to 60 the next. I put my seeds out in the sun on the nice days but the rest of the time they've had to stay indoors. So far the eggplants are doing great.

Yap, good info. Woulda been nice if I'd had it long ago when I started gardening. But then, hard times make us stronger. I was timing my tomato starts to just be ready to transplant March 1st. But when I added the Neptune liquid Fish & Seaweed fertilizer, they surprised me by how fast they grew. Had no choice but to transplant them early, because they had grown to over 2 feet tall and were beginning to bloom. Since half my plants are determinate Celebrity, I'll start more seeds about April 1 so I can keep producing later harvests. Thanx again for your helpful videos.

Your garden is so inviting! I'm zone 4 Canada, I don't plant out my seedlings until ~ June 10. Frost early June is not uncommon. Will start my 12 week seeds like tomatillos next week. I've had good results with homemade coir seed starter. 4 cups coir, 1 cup vermiculite, 1/4 cup perlite, 4 tsp Gaia Green 4-4-4 organic fertilizer. Don't care for compressed peat pots, they stay too damp. The peat pucks/discs are pretty good but the netting does not biodegrade fast enough. Just slice through it in 2-3 spots before planting in the ground to give the roots space to grow. I have seen root binding caused by netting.

I think I have caught it in time and have corrected my error. Thanks.

I'm starting my 3rd year gardening and your videos are so helpful. Too much water has been my issue. I'm experimenting with the self watering seed starting trays. This is going to be my second attempt at gardening vegetables. Last year was a total failure but a learning experience. I started watching your videos as well as a few other UA-cam videos, one of which showed how to "winter sow" your seeds to give them a head start in jugs. I have to say that all of my seeds are up and running this year, most of which I harvested myself, which I learned watching another UA-camr gardening channel. And the shoebox idea, I actually did that simply because it was a cheaper way to plant as money is pretty hard to come by these days. It worked out great and 100% germination in both jugs and shoeboxes. My issue now is everything is coming up pretty leggy and I don't know how to fix that. I know you showed how it could be fixed with all of my tomato plants because of the extended fuzzy roots on the stem itself, but my bell peppers are probably an inch tall now and very leggy, still only first set of leaves, no true leaves yet. Squash is taking off like a champ, I'm so proud. Four kinds of potatoes up and running so nicely as well. I just wanted to say thank you for all the helpful videos. I really wasn't sure if I wanted to go through the expense again this year only to fail again, but watching your videos made me decide to give it another go and I'm very glad I did. Will continue to watch and learn.

    • @TheMistyBlueLounge
      @TheMistyBlueLounge 2 роки тому

I'm a year late so you probably have an answer by now but here's some basics on how to fix leggy seedlings.
Once seeds germinate you want to dial back the heat and humidity a little or else they kind of outgrow themselves and stretch. Also increase light quite a bit (a window sill may not be adequate and extra lighting might be necessary) and expose the plants to a very light breeze which will help stiffen them up (a small fan or gentle breeze from an open window).
      Hope this helps!

I love your videos! They are so helpful. I've planted kale, marigold and tomato seeds, and have used heat mats and a grow light for the first time. Followed your advice, including on the tomatoes in Solo cups. (I had NO intentions of starting tomatoes...I have seedlings ordered from my favorite organic farmer... but the heirloom seeds were included as a free gift! You get it. And yes, I planted 20 seeds, 2 each in 10 cups! Lol I already promised some to a friend if I'm successful.) The kale and marigolds have begun germinating but are not yet at 50%. Thanks!

My last frost date is this coming week in 9b, Sacramento. I started my pepper plants and tomatoes from seed in late December so I am ready to transplant in a few days. One tip; BEWARE the Chinese "peat pots", I do not know what chemicals they are made with but they do not absorb water well, I tried them in Jan and threw them all away. Best ones are name brand, ie Jiffy pots.I followed your Fall advise and overwintered some habanero peppers and they are currently hardening-off with my tomatoes for transplant this coming week.

Indoor planting I planted 1 Rio Grande tomato, 1 Roma tomato, and 2 San Marzano tomatoes, marketeer cucumber, normal green zucchini, purple beauty bell pepper and I believe in California wonder bell pepper not sure of the color. All but the zucchini are heirloom two or three tomato seeds in each container and had 100% germination over all the varieties and cucumber has germinated. Outdoor planting back in September a direct sewed some rainbow Swiss chard and many of the seeds never sprouted until about three weeks before Texas had that massive snowstorm for a week, and once they sprouted I also planted some heirloom kale in between them in the pot. Thankfully the Swiss chard had one or two sets of leaves on it before the snow and they have survived without being covered and after all the snow melted and it warmed up the kale sprouted. And currently I’m just waiting on my potatoes to grow more foliage since there’s died during the snow. I am also transplanted my Meyer lemon trees a couple weeks before the snow and I just transplanted a Muscadine triumph grapevine, I will be transplanting my Niagara grapevine that may or may not produce fruit and I just transplanted two peach trees in a fig tree and I will be planting some sweet corn and some Russian mammoth sunflowers impossibly lettuce and okra

I've been using coconut coir for a year or so and really like it. I bought a big block and saw off a chunk whenever I need to start seeds. I also mix it in with my regular potting soil.

To avoid wasting seeds, I "pregerminate." I dampen a paper towel, put seeds in, fold towel in half and put in a plastic bag or container. In a week or so, hopefully I'll see which ones have germinated & plant those in the seed starting mixture

You asked us to post what we're seeding - I'm doing a second seeding of winter/early spring veg to see how late I can push the season on the Gulf coast. I'll use shade cloth as it starts to heat up. Arugula, chives, raab, cress, yod fah, chijimisai, carrots (using your freezer technique), beets, sugar snap peas, nasturtiums, probably some more specialty salad greens. (Tatsoi, radicchio, mache, frisee, pac choi, mixed lettuces are still going strong ) Also starting some summer flower seeds to get them ready to replace the spring ones when the heat comes. Blue woodruff, cosmos, gomphrena, strawflower, tobacco, dahlia, flowering basil, zinnia. Oh, and eggplant seeds - tomato seedlings are already nearly ready to plant out.

Very helpful, as always. I started my pepper and tomato seeds today after testing viability with the wet paper towel method. I used seedling mix, trays, and a heating mat. I made free humidity domes from empty water containers I can recycle afterwards. First time I’m doing this, so fingers crossed it works.

In South Africa, I use a mixture of 80% Coco Peat (made from coconut husks) and 20% perlite as my seedling mix, holds water well in the dry heat we have. Always around 90% germination success rate. I Plant in toilet rolls, they don't degrade before the seedlings are ready to plant and you can either plant straight in the ground (cardboard will degrade) or gently unroll the cardboard and plant.

One easy way to germinate your seed is to put them directly in a transparent glass of water and leave them there 1 or 2 days. It works even with very old seeds.
