  • This is a review of the famed deco Norelco Philips radio from the 1960's and seen in the James Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever in 1971. The radio is a comprehensive receiver since it tunes longwave, medium wave, short wave, and FM. The radio is often sought by collectors who cherish it's deco appearance and it's performance. This review shows some of the features of the radio, a couple which are unusual.

I got one for Christmas in 1972. You're missing an important aspect about the swivel base. The swivel base was used for determining your location. While the orientation of the radio will determine reception strength, by aligning the base to line up to true north/south, you could find the bearing direction of the received station, a compass & a map.
It works like this...Notice the base has degree markings. You'd set the base so 0 degrees is true north. You'd then tune to a station that you know it location... like WLS in Chicago. You'd then swing the radio around the base until the signal fades out, using the signal strength meter as a visual guide, you then note the degree heading on the front of the radio above the base ring. Then you draw a line in a map over Chicago with the same bearing heading. Next you tune to another known station, like WOWO in Kansas City. Do the same thing... swivel the radio to null the signal, note the bearing degree, & mark it on the map over Kansas City. Then a third... WLW in New Orleans... same thing... note bearing & mark a line over New Orleans. You'll then see that the three line will roughly intersect. That's where you are!
Along with the Instructional Manual that came with the radio when new, there was also a clear plastic compass template you'd use for this purpose of marking a map. You'd use a magnetic compass to align the map, or the compass rose on the map itself to correspond with the bearing markers on the radio base.

I have one of these radios. It has very good non-fatiguing tone, at least on the AM and FM bands. There are better European radios of the same era than this. But the L6X38T and it's successor, the 22RL798 have that wonderful mid 1960's look. It was among the top radios in Consumer Reports 1967 shortwave radio tests. These are fairly common on e-bay but its hard to find one that works and that is in cosmetically good condition. I would describe this as a somewhat delicate radio, you have to be really careful not to brush it against anything and things like the switches and antennas need to be handled with care. Shortwave reception on strong stations is adequate. The built in earphone feature was dropped when the radio was updated and became the 22RL798. The one thing I notice when removing it from my storage area is that it is quite heavy and bulky. It is really more of a stationary radio even though it runs on batteries and has a carrying handle.

I bought one in Singapore in 1967. Had it for 3 years until someone took it. Was the best radio I every had. You could listen on short wave ship to shore radio. Also why'll in the Far East, listen to World Sports on short radio from around the world. One last thing I remember, was listening to the news in different Far East countries in English.

I just inherited one of these, along with several reel to reel players and tube amplifiers all in pristine condition. Plus hundreds of tapes of all genres of music he recorded by hand. Thanks for the video, really excited to use this!!

Hi, I do not know if we could add to this receiver a BFO for short waves, but for your throat honey could do the case ^^ Regards

The Philips CP91408 power transformer for mine is very unusual, it has a switch for 7.5 and 9 volts and another DIN type output (I don't know what it's for). It certainly is a neat looking radio and it has a nice sound too.

I saw that radio in the background on that movie James Bond “Diamonds Are Forever”. Neat film and great radio. The dials do run frequency backwards because in Europe it runs Metre Band forward then. I had a Gtundig run the same way across the dial.

I just bought a non working version of this radio on ebay, and of course no directions and the schematic I found was in Dutch or German. Your video review was very helpful and I was able (with some DeOxit) to get it playing again. It was the earphone switch that was the issue! Thanks Again for your video.

judging by the size of the back and operation and the fact he said 6 I'm guessing here but I'd assume D and the display possibly would be a 9 volt
