In the beginning of the Russia/Ukraine war, I tuned into Ukrainian AM stations and held up my phone to the speaker with the Google Translate app running and it easily translated what was going on.
I feel old. I remember when my grandfather had a license for his CB. He listened to long wave or short wave at night. My other grandfather listened to police and fire on his Bearcat scanner. I listened to KNX or KFI at night under the covers in bed. A long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away.
It's funny that a lot of hams will ask "Why use internet radio if you have a phone in your pocket?" Forgetting that a lot of the danger to our hobby comes from the opinion "Why use ham radio if you have a phone in your pocket?"
Your picking up hetrodyne possibly from the FM band. Mine does the same according to what antenna on shortwave. It's not filtering out the fm with the antenna your using.
FYI, the most recent firmware update turns this into a full coverage receiver, able to cover up to 30 Mhz in shortwave. As to picking up KFI over WWV, I dont know that your antenna setup isnt causing problems, using splitters has always done weird things for me. I would recommend picking up a simple L shaped female to male mono so you arent using a splitter.
I've seen reports from many users that the use of the external antenna causes the overload leading to the interference of strong local stations (KFI) when you were trying to listen to WWV. Perhaps step outside with only the telescoping antenna and recheck some shortwave freqs. I'm really enjoying mine, had for 3 weeks and two firmware upgrades. Current version as of 9/19/24 is 4.6. The MW broadcast band is the weakest link in my opinion. I've found the FM performance very good. Loving the internet capability!
Winamp and a clone by the name of XMMS, which was built into the earliest versions of Ubuntu Linux, a long time ago. I have vivid memories of streaming electronic music while playing Counter Strike. Those were the golden years.
many questions Can you call these radios? In that case, our cell Smartphones too are radios, in the sense they all use radio (EM) waves.. And Explain to me (LoL) how would you DX in that 73
When you used the splitter for the antenna, did you plug the open port with a terminator? Im wondering if the interference was just coming in from the open port. Thank you for your testing. Love your videos. You actually insprired me to get my ham license. Finally got it last week. Thank you again! 73
Why the heck does a radio need a firmware upgrade? It searches for channels but a firmware upgrade for fm and am? I Know the old radio still work today? Is this has to do with dab+?
@@HamRadioCrashCourse thanks for sharing this im gonna check this on the internet, what is the use of this fpgas? Some dab+? Or what cause we all know radios run on mhz wich means fm and am have channels signals
I recently purchased the Choyong LC 90 that is performing poorly on the mw band even though I updated to firmware 4.6. I am using the outdoor mode for my outdoor am loop. Support has told me to try the LC 90 outdoors in outdoor mode. Would the trek am loop work with the LC 90 ?
the MW is pretty poor. It is better to turn off the WIFI when listening to MW or shortwave, and being outside with a longwire attached. I like the FM and internet stations, I have already added 50 more station streams to my favorites.
That station at 91.5 sounds like WKRP before Andy switched to the rock format. I was waiting to hear 'You're listening to 'The *looks at coffee mug* Johnny Caravella Show'...
That radio is not ready for prime time, especially for the price. The external antenna jack placement and the lack of selectivity is a hard no for me. If I want to stream, I use my Ocean Digital which is a great internet radio. Cheers
Warning: you'll be darn lucky if it connects to your wifi network. I have 8 other internet radios that work perfectly. The Choyong is a $250 paperweight.
I have 9 friends who own this radio, none of them have issues connecting to any network. I don't own this radio, but one thing I like about it, is the fact that Choyong constantly releases updates, and is very active answering questions on social media (including UA-cam)
I thought the idea of a radio is not being tied to the internet, in a survivalist mode. Furthermore this radio has limited bandwidth, unlike other SW radios with 1800kHz to 30MHz range. If you want internet radio, you can just stay with your smart phone!
This may be a bit off topic but I have a small problem that possibly you or some of your audience may have knowledge of. I am just trying to get back on the air after 13or so years of inactivity due to a condo that has rules against using ham or CB equipment. I know I could have taken them to court and PROBABLY have beaten them even if they claim it is a deed restriction. But did not go that route because all of my neighbors would have hated me because a law suit and lawyer would be an excuse to rase the condo fees even if I am totally within my rights. But now I am getting ready to sell my condo and set up my equipment in an RV. But I found an od little radio I can find nowhere on the web and I would like to get a manual before even firing it up to see if it works. Not even sure if it was a gift by someone or maybe a silent key garage sale???? It's an Alinco DK-MC 3 SX. Anyone know anything about it or how to find a manual for it?
You don’t need to pay more than a $100 for a radio to listen to news. Heck a $10 radio will still let you listen to depressing news. News will not change even if you have an expensive radio. And news from around the world is even more depressing than our local news. Listening to good music just requires a pair of good bluetooth speakers. That said it’s still fun to fiddle around with a like old fashioned radio. Enjoy a little of an era gone by.
There are some cuts in this video after posting, UA-cam didn't like some of the music that played over the air!
well, we still admire your taste!
No fair use in youtubeland?
@@HamRadioCrashCourse I figured it was something like, or just life- loved the video. Thanks!
@@threadripper979 Absolutely NOT! UA-cam has truly become "Themtube".
Oh man, the WinAMP memories you unlocked!
It whips the Lamas ass😮
I was scrolling down to type "It really whips the llama's ass!" right as he said it lol
It’s still available…somehow. And can confirm, still whips the llama’s ass.
Just went open source, they're asking the community to modernize it. I'm stoked to have winamp on my phone
Shoutcast was the shit.
I bought one of these a couple months ago. It is now my favorite radio.
Love the Buc-ee's t-shirt.
It is not a bad radio, but with a few firmware upgrades, it could be a great radio. The internet portion of this radio is intriguing.
I've been listening to RadioParadise for over 20 years all over the world. Streaming at its finest!!

Interesting radio. It should really go from 530kHz to 30MHz though. It should really have CB and 10 Meters.
It's funny that a lot of hams will ask "Why use internet radio if you have a phone in your pocket?" Forgetting that a lot of the danger to our hobby comes from the opinion "Why use ham radio if you have a phone in your pocket?"
Love that Buc-ee's shirt.
Last five occasions I went to buc-ees I got treated like garbage by the staff

Very interesting radio but perhaps not quite ready for prime time. Thanks for taking the time to review this for us.
Does it support DRM? Digital Radio Mondial. Basically FM quality from an AM shortwave station.
73 Ed.
What is the app you used on your cell phone to put against the speaker to identify signals the radio is picking up

Good content. What's that IOS app you used to "listen"

Really want to get a SW only capable receiver but it looks like the best option is to spend the $$$ and do the buy once cry once route.
Good start?
No Internet features, but "hearing" good things about the new Tecsun S-2200x.
Oh geez that ain’t cheap!
Thanks for testing, much appreciated. I'll pass on that thing. 73 KE8SDS

I saw that radio at the Hamvention this year. I thought about getting one but haven’t… yet.
I'll say it for you "it's junk" Thanks for the review.

My connected antenna has a broadcast band stop filter, I believe there might be something related to the ferrite antenna inside the radio.
What was the app you used on your phone to search stations on the radio?
So it have Wifi connetion.I wonder if they buil in microfone (hidden) so the "manufacturer" can lessem to you...
Soma FM is internet radio, I've been listening to Secret Agent and Groove Salad since about 2004
Winamp... Ahhh The good ole days. Does it have the ability to manually enter a web audio stream?
I have a feeling that what you was hearing on the WWV frequencies was a nearby AM broadcast station
Indeed it was. I have an AM broadcast band stop on that antenna, it is possible that the radio was pulling that in over its ferrite antenna.
It is weird that they have the right-side empty?
Should have sent that to Randy to remove the plastic
Why the heck does a radio need a firmware upgrade? It searches for channels but a firmware upgrade for fm and am? I Know the old radio still work today? Is this has to do with dab+?
Newer radios generally have FPGAs or other computing bodies, hence the need for firmware.

OK revision here, took another look at it now that i have had cataract surgery and it is a DR-MO3SX sorry about that.
Just turn off wifi when using SW.
