  • In this video I spend the day exploring Belgrade, Serbia's capital city.
Some of the places I visited.
Republic Square where you'll find the national museum and the Prince Mihailo monument.
The beautiful Church of Saint Sava. A must if you go to Belgrade.
    The bohemian area of Skadarlija.
From Skadarlija I walked towards Kalemagdan enjoying the street art on the way.
Kalemagden Park is where you'll find the Belgrade Fortress. Another must see in Belgrade. The park also has a zoo and an amusement park as well as a really cool bar and restaurant.
Facing the entrance to the park is Knez Mihaila. Belgrade's main shopping street where there are plenty of street performers and it must be said, plenty of beautiful women. The women in Belgrade are stunning!
Later in the night I went to the Freestyler nightclub. One of the many floating nightclub barges along the Sava river. I went with a couple of new friends I made at the hostel habitat where I stayed in the city. A great way to end a great day in Belgrade.
Drone footage is filmed with a DJI Mini 2.
Vlogging camera is a Sony FDR X3000.

The 10th (Irish) division. I'm just reading about it. In Macedonia there's a Celtic cross dedicated to the men that lost their lives. It reads "Do cum gloire Dé and Onóra na hÉireann. In memory of those of the Xth Irish Division who fell on Gallipoli and in defence of Serbia and of all Irishmen who gave their lives in the Great War RIP". Serbs owe a lot to Irish. In 1915, the Serbian army and civilian refugees were pulling out from the onslaught of combined German, Austro-Hungarian and Bulgarian armies. Bulgarians tried to cut off their retreat. However, the 10th Irish Division (UK at that time) covered their retreat, facing an entire Bulgarian army. The 5th Dublin battalion got decimated in that battle, and others took pretty much the same beating, but Serbian army was able to pull out, and live to fight another day. If you go to Macedonia to lake Dorjan, you can find a monument to the sacrifice of the Irish soldiers.
ps. As I won't be doing any travel, due to Covid-19 restrictions, any time soon, can you go to The Old Borough in Swords and have a pint there for me? :-)

    • @PaulTheIrishPainter
      @PaulTheIrishPainter  2 роки тому +10

I've heard about the Irish soldiers in some of the comments here and looked it up. Fascinating piece of history. It's sad many Irish people don't know of these soldiers. It would make a great film someday.
I wouldn't get out to Swords too often but when I do I'll be sure to have a couple of pints for you 😂. The Old Borough is a Wetherspoons so cheap pints I'm all about it 😉. Did you live in Dublin before?

Singidunum (Serbian: Сингидунум/Singidunum) was an ancient city which later evolved into modern Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. Very safe, clean and super friendly. I think people from these parts think Eastern Europe, Balkans etc are dangerous after watching so many films portraying it that way. White in the name came from medieval times since fortress inside at that time was filled with towers and buildings (where park is now) built with white stone so approaching from the river it looked like white town,it was kinda glowing white.
Tesla museum will be moved to a much larger building soon (in 2-3 years), actually it's an old abandoned power plant building on the Danube and near city center. This current building was kinda temporary solution, since they can't show most of Tesla's stuff because of lack of space, big chunk is collecting dust in depot.
That pavement around Saint Sava temple is not repaired because next year they will start renovation of that whole area around the temple, they are finishing now with circle plateau around it.

I didn't study the Sigidunum history but the terminologie is roman and the romans ruled in the second century the area, so believe me that even if they built in the top of an old city, in that moment any urban activities was romans activity. The Thracians/vlachs or eventually celtic population in the area was living in the villages around the cities or shepherds on the hills and mountains.

You know why Serbians feel a connection to the Irish? Because Belgrade and a lot of the surrounding areas including the city of Sofia were Celtic cities. Tara mountain in Serbia is from the same name Tara in Ireland. The Danube was named by the Celts, one of dozens of rivers they named throughout Europe, many with that root of "Dan" in it (Don Dan Dn etc. including the Rhine, the Vistula and many others). It isnt odd they also named Danzig or Gdansk and Danmark. People think the Celts were limited to Ireland, but they were all over Europe (not just Iberia). There is a lot of history we are never told about this. It conflicts with someone elses history I am not allowed to say who on this totally controlled site.
