  • On the island of Ometepe in Nicaragua is the location for this stunning Organic Pool. And it's the only pool of its kind in the whole country! This DIY pool was made by Cris Ketch (with helpers) following the bubble powered Organic Pools method created by David Pagan Butler. Cris adapted the design and materials to suit this tropical location.

    Very nice. You should do a film like this but with images or film of a selection of mature pools which you have put in in the past.

    I love your videos and I am seriously thinking of building a pool for myself with this concept. While I was doing some research about this subject I got the idea of putting some freshwater mussels in the planting area. They are great in filtering and cleaning the water. Did you do any experimenting with mussels if not would advice you to have a look at it. Maybe it will be a must-have if it works well. I am just trying to help grow the community. Love your work and hope you will see this.

      Did you find anything further about the mussels? Do they need flowing water? (If so what rate?)

    David, I'm a big fan.. We've been with you since you began.. I need help. We've got a 1 acre "tank" or natural pond in heavy dark black clay soil. 20 years old. So it holds water well, but it's so dark with a mirror look. There's a few tannins that I'll begin filtering through the wetland area (which is twice as large) soon. My family won't swim in it unless they see the bottom. Snakes and gators..😊😏. How would you recommend to lighten an area for a swimming hole? White gravel floor? White clay? Light colored sinking liner? ?? The Dave

    Hi David, I just binge watched all your videos. Great Stuff. My question is, can you add a pool heater to the organic pool or will that just kill the ecosystem?

      It's in Nicaragua, so it'll be like bathtub temp most of the year. I could see putting in a fountain for evaporative cooling.

    • @magre9656

      It is crushed basalt. It is a volcanic island so I guess they are using the materials which are readily available there.

    How do you clean the debris that might accumulate in the gravel bed over the years?
    Drain the water, take the gravel out, clean it and put it back? Or, put in a back flush system used by some koi pond builders?

    • @grahamegavin421
      @grahamegavin421 2 роки тому

      From what I have seen of nature filtered pools many of them have a shall gravel bed that works as a skimmer box with the water entering and flowing down through the gravel. This functions as a trap for debris.

    • @fitnessopportunity9124
      @fitnessopportunity9124 2 роки тому +2

      The pool featured is mine. I have found that the microorganisms in the water clean the majority of the debris. Some sludge builds up in the bottom over time and to combat this i drain the pool once a year and give the pool bottom a clean and scrub. When I emptied it the gravel was very clean.

    David, have you ever tried making a natural pool without a liner?

    • @baggetja1234
      @baggetja1234 3 роки тому

      Yes, you can do this with clay soil, tamp it hard when wet and it will make a maturely liner.

    • @crispyfishstick
      @crispyfishstick 3 роки тому

      @@baggetja1234 I have plenty of clay. Then would I need to let it dry after compacting it? I'd imagine the water would just soften it again after I was done.

    • @pansepot1490
      @pansepot1490 2 роки тому

      It’s rubber, not plastic. “Organic” (if it even makes sense using such a word for a pool that is human built and therefore artificial) refers to the filtration system that is done by plants and bacteria in the gravel bed instead of mechanical filters and chemicals like chlorine.
      For a fully organic experience go and swim in a river, lake or any natural pond.
      Clay is hard when dry, in the bottom of ponds it is always muddy. It settles in the bottom and the water can get clear but if you go in and stir the mud the water gets dirty. It’s part of the organic experience.

    How worm can you allow the water to be without killing the ecosystem?

    • @aylaelea
      @aylaelea 3 роки тому

      The problem without temperature is that it reduces the ammount of oxygen available. But you can help that problem by putting many plants and also the extra oxygenators that u can see running on the video

    • @fitnessopportunity9124
      @fitnessopportunity9124 2 роки тому

      The ecosystem in a tropical pool is created in a hot temperature and therefore thrives in such. The water is kept cooler by making the pool deep (3 meters) and using one of the bubblers connected to a 4" of tubing that runs to the bottom.of the pool in the deep end. It's draws cool water from the bottom and brings the over all temperature down. This was an add on to David's stytem that i put in to account for the hot climate. The pool maintains a temperature similar to the nearby lake and therefore the natural ecology of the area is in balance with that of the pool.
