There are two very important musicals missing from this list: Billy Elliot The Musical and The Producers. Both of them won best musical, both were nominated for 15 Tony's (A feat only surpassed by Hamilton) and both won 10+ Tonys (The Producers won 12 and BETM won 10).
Hairspray is one of the highest grossing musicals, yes Dear Evan Hansen is great show but it’s too new, it’s only have one lead cast and who knows if it’ll even last after Ben Platt leaves. All of the shows on here are from how many tickets and money they have sold and accumulated. This is over the past 17 years and not just recently, more people know about these new show because of the media and pop culture are finally showing them more and more. I recommend not discrediting the shows on this list, they’ve obviously done something right.

Hairspray Musical got adapted on Movie and TV. Toured the US already. Been popular to high school plays. Hairspray is a great show even during its time. Hamilton is also great but it's new. At the moment, Hairpray has proven a lot already and Hamilton will soon have its time.
Floo Wing the only reason Hamilton hasn't made more money than Hairspray is because Hairspray played for what 7 or 8 years? while Hamiltons been playing for 2 years so far.. given how difficult it is to get Hamilton tickets at literally every showing, still more than 2 years in and the astronomical price people are willing to pay to see it, I'd wager Hamilton will surpass Hairsprays gross well before it's been open 7 years.. But box office gross is besides the point, this isn't a list for highest grossing musicals of the new millennium, it's a list of "BEST" modern stage musicals, and on that mark I think it's hard to argue that Hairspray is the better quality work.
If you ever make a list of musicals robbed at the Tony's/musicals that deserved more, better make sure Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet is in the top 3.

DEH is still pretty new and Hairspray has been on broadway for years. Hairspray has been insanely popular for years so it deserves to be that high up. But im like you I love them both a lot.
I remember watching wicked for the first time last year. Had never seen a broadway show, and was never interested in any of them. My family took me to see it, and the moment they did that last number I started tearing up. What an AMAZING show. For years I’ve been seeing this billboard since I was a kid, and never did I think it was going to be what it was.
I'm a big supporter of the Broadway Musical version of Aladdin. Granted it's a pretty young show even by modern Broadway standards but darn if it isn't the best Disney Broadway show since The Lion King.
I think that Newsies deserves a lot of credit for being better than its movie, but Aladdin is a visual spectacle that provides a different take on the animated classic and succeeds greatly despite its source material being one of the most beloved animated films of all time. Plus the carpet scene in A Whole New World can only be described as magical. I also happen to love some of the new original songs for the Broadway show and think they are on par with if not better than some of the original songs from the movie which is really hard to do.
Hamilton is only third? Um.....sure okay.....okay to be fair I kind of understand and DEH should have been on it! It’s so good ahhhhhhh and I can agree with wicked even though I never saw it or listened....

I went to Hamilton London a while a go and can tell you that it was worth every penny! Without it I would be *helpless* and trust me if you don't see it you will never be *satisfied* .
Okay, I understand why Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812 isn't on here because it didn't most of the 13 Tony's it was nominated for, but this musical doesn't deserve to be overlooked and therefore (along with some other sad factors) closed way too early. Please give this musical the attention it deserves! It's awesome, and, personally I thought it was better than Hamilton.

Why is Great Comet so underrated? Like, it was so groundbreaking. The cast was diverse, the set was unheard of, and it was super immersive. The music was very unique too. It should be on the list.
Might I suggest a MsMojo video on top 10 non-English musicals that deserve an English production? I know many French ones that are really worth the shot! "Starmania" (actually became Tycoon in English, but failed except for "The World is Stone" and "Only the Very Best"), "Notre-Dame de Paris", "Roméo et Juliette", "Le Roi Soleil", and "Mozart, l'Opéra Rock" were hits in France (Starmania is a legendary one). "Roméo et Juliette" and "Mozart, l'Opéra Rock" were successful in Japan or other countries, but none have had an English version released.
Y'all DEH is nothing spectacular. Musically speaking, it's bland and perdictable. I do think it deserved an honorable mention for the connection it's made, but outside of that, it's a regular pop musical
Something rotten reference! That is so underrated! It was the second musical I have ever seen and it was hilarious, I highly recommend it. It is full of references and hardly curses.
Spring Awakening helped me out so much growing up. Like I never thought a musical would be something to help me get through my awkward teen years but it did. And as much as love the original Broadway production with Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff, I honestly thought the 2015-16 revival was a lot better cause it brought out a whole new layer to the story. Plus I liked that it made the story more accessible by using ASL.
I was waiting for them to talk about it but they never did instead they basically said the best thing about it is that the obc starred “rachel berry and jessie st james” i have never been more disappointed
For the people who are mad about Dear Evan Hansen, this video was made only a little less than a month after it became popular. It had not won any awards yet and was still fairly new to the community.
I was recently in New York for a week on holiday from the UK. I saw Hamilton in London on the Saturday, flew to New York on the Wednesday and saw Come From Away on the Friday, just less than a week after seeing Hamilton. I've always wanted to see a musical on Broadway so to see two amazing shows within a week and in the theatre capitals either side of the Atlantic was truly my dream come true. Come From Away is now one of my favourite musicals and I would highly recommend it to everyone. My brother hates musicals but loved Come From Away, that's a small part of history to me! I hope a West End transfer is on the cards so I can share it with my friends in the UK.
Same! I've seen literally over 40 Broadway/West End shows in my life and The Great Comet was honestly the best show and theatrical experience I've ever had. I don't like to see shows more than once because I think I'm taking away from an experience of seeing another show, but I saw Comet twice and LOVED IT both times. I sat on the stage the first time and sat in the balcony the second and had two very amazing, but different, experiences.

Y’all need to understand that this list is looking at musicals that have and continue to be popular over the years as well as how acclaimed and timeless they are. So many of the newer musicals that didn’t make the list or are only honorable mentions have either not been around for long or they did not have a good/long run on broadway, or they are off-broadway shows.
Honestly, its sad to see people hating on a lot of musicals. I haven't heard a lot of musicals like many other people, but a decent size and some songs from other musicals and they all sound amazing. Just remember beauty is in the eyes (or in our case, ears) of the beholder

I went to Hamilton London a while a go and can tell you that it was worth every penny! Without it I would be *helpless* and trust me if you don't see it you will never be *satisfied* .

Okay, I understand why Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812 isn't on here because it didn't most of the 13 Tony's it was nominated for, but this musical doesn't deserve to be overlooked and therefore (along with some other sad factors) closed way too early. Please give this musical the attention it deserves! It's awesome, and, personally I thought it was better than Hamilton.

Why is Great Comet so underrated? Like, it was so groundbreaking. The cast was diverse, the set was unheard of, and it was super immersive. The music was very unique too. It should be on the list.

Might I suggest a MsMojo video on top 10 non-English musicals that deserve an English production? I know many French ones that are really worth the shot! "Starmania" (actually became Tycoon in English, but failed except for "The World is Stone" and "Only the Very Best"), "Notre-Dame de Paris", "Roméo et Juliette", "Le Roi Soleil", and "Mozart, l'Opéra Rock" were hits in France (Starmania is a legendary one). "Roméo et Juliette" and "Mozart, l'Opéra Rock" were successful in Japan or other countries, but none have had an English version released.

Something rotten reference! That is so underrated! It was the second musical I have ever seen and it was hilarious, I highly recommend it. It is full of references and hardly curses.
Spring Awakening helped me out so much growing up. Like I never thought a musical would be something to help me get through my awkward teen years but it did. And as much as love the original Broadway production with Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff, I honestly thought the 2015-16 revival was a lot better cause it brought out a whole new layer to the story. Plus I liked that it made the story more accessible by using ASL.

Newsies is one of my all time favorite musicals and 6 years later I still know all the words to Watch What Happens
I was recently in New York for a week on holiday from the UK. I saw Hamilton in London on the Saturday, flew to New York on the Wednesday and saw Come From Away on the Friday, just less than a week after seeing Hamilton. I've always wanted to see a musical on Broadway so to see two amazing shows within a week and in the theatre capitals either side of the Atlantic was truly my dream come true. Come From Away is now one of my favourite musicals and I would highly recommend it to everyone. My brother hates musicals but loved Come From Away, that's a small part of history to me! I hope a West End transfer is on the cards so I can share it with my friends in the UK.
How could Avenue Q (which beat Wicked for best musical that year) not be anywhere on this list? Or even mentioned.

Same! I've seen literally over 40 Broadway/West End shows in my life and The Great Comet was honestly the best show and theatrical experience I've ever had. I don't like to see shows more than once because I think I'm taking away from an experience of seeing another show, but I saw Comet twice and LOVED IT both times. I sat on the stage the first time and sat in the balcony the second and had two very amazing, but different, experiences.
Agreed. Seeing Great Comet, on stage, was the best experience of my life, even more than Hamilton. I will never forget it

Y’all need to understand that this list is looking at musicals that have and continue to be popular over the years as well as how acclaimed and timeless they are. So many of the newer musicals that didn’t make the list or are only honorable mentions have either not been around for long or they did not have a good/long run on broadway, or they are off-broadway shows.

Honestly, its sad to see people hating on a lot of musicals. I haven't heard a lot of musicals like many other people, but a decent size and some songs from other musicals and they all sound amazing. Just remember beauty is in the eyes (or in our case, ears) of the beholder
