It makes sense that the dirt would have to be edible when they “bury someone alive,” but I wouldn't have thought of that on my own. Its neat to find out what goes into doing scenes like that.
I honestly thought they were just so committed to the scene that they would get real dirt and then when the director said cut they would swish their mouths out between takes.
In culinary school as a big project I made radishes in "edible dirt" that was made from a mixture of roasted barley, malt flour and melted butter. It was a decade ago though so I don't remember the exact recipe. Took inspiration from a recipe found in the NOMA book. It was really tasty
One of my informal hobbies is using one type of food to mock up a different kind of food. Think, rice crispy squares meets roast turkey (I'm now required to bring this to the Thanksgiving family get togethers). From here it"s a short walk to creating edible mock-inedibles.
I could only imagine going to film a scene, expecting the smell of freshly shoveled dirt and getting smacked with the smell of chocolate and jerky instead.
I remember that for the short horror movie we did for uni I spent days searching recepies and getting elements for fake meat for a raw meat eating sceane and somebody just bought some tofu and added edible red food dye. I felt floored
Scott has one of the best jobs in the world. Some would say the movie magic is ruined for him, but I think knowing how it all works makes you appreciate good effects and props in movies better than anyone else.
Oooh, if edible dirt is used for scenes where dirt ends up near the actor's faces, like in grave digging scenes or digging through soil, that would make it common as dirt.
Can you make a video on how, in the Godfather, that one guy (Mo, I think) gets shot in the eye through his glasses? I've always wondered how that effect is safe since it is so close to his eye.
That was absoilutely fascinating! You mentioned that the actor didn't have a problem with eating beef, allowing for the mulchy texture to be made of jerky; it got me thinking. I've got this disease called celiac, where I absolutely can not have gluten (which is in all those cookies). What would happen if an actor who needed to eat dirt had celiac or a gluten allergy? Would the dirt be made of gluten free versions of everything, or an entirely different dirt recipe made, or a stunt double used? I'd love to know. Thanks for making these videos, Scott!
@@peterstangl8295 S11E9, "It Takes You Away", though with how the camera is positioned, it's more the suggestion Whittaker's Doctor is eating soil (or greens; definitely sounds more like greens than soil to me). "Norway; definitely Norway. One of the frilly bits at the top."
That last minute request for more dirt must have presented a challenge but your team was dirtermined. I bet everyone soilebrated when you were finished!
Have there been any issues in the past with dietary restrictions with actors that needed to interact with edible props? I could imagine it's much easier to find replacement "ingredients" nowadays with the rise of health awareness and growing food fads.
Mark here: We have an actress on our show who is allergic to pork. And they eat bacon in every breakfast scene which seems to happen every episode. Lots of turkey bacon to the rescue!
@@MarkStarboySpacek And you can get it to look like pork bacon? Do you have to do anything special? Because the turkey bacon I eat never looks like "real thing."
So you leave the creme fillin for the oreos? Surprising to me. I wouldn't have thought about the texture being too powdery. I'm going to have to chew on that a while.
good grief was waiting for a finger to go flying remember unplug processor before sticking hand in it 😂your job seems so fascinating i’m sure it’s not always glamours but looks fun
The real challenge, accomplishing this same task for a gluten-free vegan diabetic actor. Hmm, there is, evidently, an H-E-B nearby, so this is clearly Texas, not LA.
Last time I tried eating fake dirt, I felt a bit grounded.
No, you didn't. 🖕
@@DeadButDreaming666calm down, you don't need to get all dusty bro

@@DeadButDreaming666 come on I've loved you all my life
That's a good one lol
It never even occurred to me that when an actor has dirt shoveled at them, it has to be edible dirt.
This is over the legal limit of dad jokes per minute.
Yeah someone needs to bring these guys back down to Earth.

Groundbreaking work!
You guys are so down to earth, you're not affraid to do the dirty work!
I could only imagine going to film a scene, expecting the smell of freshly shoveled dirt and getting smacked with the smell of chocolate and jerky instead.
Came for the behind the scenes, stayed for the dirty jokes.
I completely, utterly dig this!

Just appreciate the grounded content here...
I’ve always wondered about that scene in MASH when Henry Blake gets a face full of soot.
you have to do a follow up when your NDA expires!
I almost die at the "dirt cheap" part.
It's a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it. I dig these videos and bet Scott could make a mountain out of a mole hill.
This is my favorite video of yours youve made Scott! Please keep making more like this ❤
Nice that you brought your video down to earth. Much more grounded than past videos!
Oh great, another dirty video will be in my watch history.
Nice to see you staying well grounded even though you have a dirty job
When you are allowed to talk about it will you please tell us why you needed so much dirt and for what show? Thanks.
I love when you show how things work with food! ❤
Scott is now a tuff builder😊
3:17 the look and the wheezing laugh.
This is an exsoilent video
And just like that: Movie magic.
Great videos as usual
thanx!

Hmmm... Walton Goggins has a big coming out of dirt scene in Fallout.
The "are you kidding me" looks on the other guys' faces 😂
“Uhhh. That’s what’s happening” when he finds the blade made me nearly spit out my coffee. Hahaha
The work Scott and his cohorts do is fascinating, but I watch for this puns. He is the best!
When you say “hold up”, the first thing that comes to my mind is the guy going, hold up wait a minute. 😂
All you were missing were some gummy worms and some cool whip to make a classic.
If the actor/actress has an issue with beef, the beyond meat jerky will also work
well, if they have beef with beef, they must be a real jerk!
The prop gang at it again gettin' down and dirty with more inside coolness
You guys really got down and dirty on that one. Although the script was a bit nutty. But as you said that's just how the cookie crumbles.
A well ground explanation that dished out the dirt on prop manufacturing.
I found your channel in the shorts but I love this format too!
Glad you enjoy it!
@@ScottPropandRoll Well, It's very Punny :)
Save a plot for me! When it's time for the big dirt nap, I'm heading your way!
I loved how gritty this was.
When I saw the subject I figured it would show a clip of The Great ❤
You need a restaurant scale food processor.
I like how this guy's channel has evolved, starting with fabric paper bags and rubber ice cubes. Good stuff.
Such a down-to-Earth UA-cam channel
Great video, Scott. Way to dig deep!
Oooh, if edible dirt is used for scenes where dirt ends up near the actor's faces, like in grave digging scenes or digging through soil, that would make it common as dirt.
Yellowjacket also has a good amount of eating dirt moments
My favorite dessert is Oreo dirt cake/pudding, so I was hoping that would be included! 😋
I love machacado, i grew up eating that stuff with eggs for breakfast. And yet, I never would’ve thought to use it to make convincing edible dirt
Can you make a video on how, in the Godfather, that one guy (Mo, I think) gets shot in the eye through his glasses? I've always wondered how that effect is safe since it is so close to his eye.
Dirt cheap thrills in Joe's garden of wonder! May he find the root of his determination before he soils himself again.
That sedentary joke is the best dad joke yet. And I don't even think it was Scott who uttered it!

I can only imagine what eating ground up Oreos, beef jerky and chips at the same time tastes like
I can't wait to see what this for and how they use it in film

Any of these would be a respectable cheese cake crust. The jerky is a bit unconventional but it could still work.
Nice and interesting video:)
Wow, this is fantastically cool! Well done you guys, and very down-to-earth presentation style :)
The fake dirt sounds delicious, all that sugar

I’ve never tried edible dirt in ‘Red Wine’….
A lot of wine snobs claim it to be ‘Earthy’ 🤔
