  • The action of the song takes place after partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and those banners hang there not as a decoration of the victorious side, but as the tsar's captured trophies after the suppression of the uprising. The insurgents used the phrase "For our freedom and yours" and wrote it on the banners also in Cyrillic to make it clear to the Russians that they are not fighting against them, but together with the tsar's embrace, it was an incentive to join the insurgents. The song is not about the fact that the Tsar is afraid of the return of Poles to the Kremlin, but that his slaves will understand what "freedom" is, which is why the banners torment the Tsar like a specter.
