I must thank Reddit for drawing me to you, I just got a set of Godox AD200 lights, can't wait to mess around with them and use your tips to create some beautiful imagery. Cheers
Thanks Bruno! Your feedback has really inspired me to make more 1 light content. I hope it's still useful for multi-light shooters, as they can just recreate the schemes without blending mode limitations. All the best my friend.
As always Dustin an awesome video, great explanation and some really useful tips showing how simple complicated looks can be. I love the idea of adding the background light separately and then changing the colour after the fact thank you 🙏 you always have me hanging on each week checking my feed waiting for your new videos 👍👍
You must be Thomas Dolby's son, because you blinded me with science once again. Consider my mind officially blown by the ease and simplicity of this exercise.
A great video as always, i love your no nonsense and straight to the point style. Hopefully you will do a quick video on how you work with the lighten layers in photoshop. There is part of the video i do not understand. When you take the shot of the products in silhouette and add it as a lighten layer, what effect does it have. When i try this it does not change anything. Does it matter what layer order they are in.
Yes! Put the base layer on the bottom - and put whatever you have lit/brightened as the top layer and set it to "lighten" blending mode. This only allows the layers to blend such that they are always displaying the brightest pixel.
Thanks Dustin! Could you make a video on how to arrange products (or basically anything that could be photographed as a still life image) in a pleasing way? Perhaps there are some general guidelines that you know of and which could greatly help improving such a staged shot. For instance I'm thinking to how famous painters have worked etc. Thanks again.
it looks as though the acrylic place is fixed to that light stand. do you have any recommendations on how to do so? i'd guess it's some kind of plate with a threaded attachment but i can't find anything in my searches.
Been watching all of your videos and love you work. Have tried a lot of these techniques myself and have seen great results. However, I have been having trouble with knives and things with a metallic surface. Any recommendations or tips?
Hey there, thank you so much for watching. Highly reflective products can be tricky! Try posting in our facebook group: facebook.com/groups/workphlo I know there's a few folks in there who shoot beautiful knives
Hello! I love your videos and since I'm starting a cosmetic products company I know how important it is the photography. I'm currently doing the pictures and everything by myself but I'd like to know how much would, for example, that project cost? Keep it up and you have a new subscriber 😊
Hey there! I linked some gear in the description. I use a 8"x36" stripbox with no grid, though a grid came with it! Best of luck and thanks for tuning in.
Sure James! I will release more detailed composites like this soon, though this is simply stacking the 4 exposures and putting them on "lighten" blending mode. No local masking needed necessarily!
Great tutorial thanks so much.. when you have a clear bottle to shoot Dustin will the lighten mode work when putting in a colour gradient in the background ? I shoot whisky bottles frequently and would really like to master this .
Hi. Do you have inner baffles inside of those strip boxes? I'm about to purchase a simple setup with flash adapters like you but I'm concerned with light dispersion inside of those boxes. Because the majority of the light from the flash goes straight. Is the middle of the softbox much hotter than the rest?
Hey there great question, I wondered this myself before purchasing the setup. Yes, my stripbox has an inner-baffle which helps. In my video shooting a sparkling beverage image (on our channel) I discuss the "hot spot" and show two examples. In general, yes there is a hot-spot which is visible when shooting really glossy items like a wine bottle. But with the inner-baffle it is fairly negligible and doesn't adversely effect my worflow in any way.
Thanks for the answer. I'd love to use your links but in my country we don't have the privilege of buying from Amazon. Anyways, your content is unique, I'm glad you don't use multi thousand dollar gear like everyone else. Hell, you don't even use a light stand here :) I'm currently shooting products with rented continuous lights with CFL-s and I combine that with my Youngnuo flash and transmitter (like yours) to blow out the background :) And group shots proved to be the most difficult for me, but I never tried this method.
Thanks for the kind words, I really thrive on minimal equipment use. That's awesome that you're introducing a back-flash to blow out the background, that's a great addition to your other lights. Best of luck!
Thanks Darryl, keep watching and it will stick like glue! No I have no formal education in photography, I've learned most of what I know from the product photography community. That's really why we started a Facebook Group to continue spreading the knowledge: facebook.com/groups/workphlo
Hey! Great video and one that's really worth recreating just for the sake of fun if nohing more. Actually I tried to do it twice and failed miserably both times. Used similar bottle and packaging, on black plexiglass. On my first attempt I did it the same way as you did - hand held. On the second attempt I put the light on a stand. All in all it turned out well, but both times I had one big problem. When I blend in the lit background I get a black line along the right side of the bottle as if the backlit bottle was a tiny bit larger. But it was not. The line appears only along that one side. I tried reducing the size of the layer to hide the line, but that didn't really help as I could see in other areas that the layer was now smaller that the rest of the layers. I used a Canon 100mm macro lens, focus did not switch, nothing moved, IS was off. I cannot figure out what it could be. You have a lot of experience with this, do you have an idea what it could be as it's a mystery to me? Thanks!
@@workphlo They were, definitely. I also tried to align them manually, but that just moved the dark line to the other side. There was no focus shift, too, so it's still a mystery to me.
Yo! Simple answer: tig welded nut to a metal plate which the glass rests on. Go check out my featured martini video on our channel, it shows the setup somewhere near the beginning!
Help. I’ve got the softbox and the speedlight adapter that are shown in the description. I just can’t work out how to attach the adapter to the softbox ?!
I will make more detailed lighten-mode composites in photoshop. For this tutorial, there is no local masking needed, it's literally just the 4 shots on lighten blending mode. You can actually try it yourself, just screen grab the 4 photos I took > stack them as layers in photshop > select all layers > switch blending mode to lighten! Best of luck, and thanks for watching Daniel! Check out our tutorial on Soap photoshop compositing for more insight as well.

Mike Edmonds Thanks, I hoped it'd help explain the idea with blending on lighten mode. Cheers
Awesome video! Looks like I have a new challenge to try.

Absolutely! Thanks for checking out the tutorial
it looks as though the acrylic place is fixed to that light stand. do you have any recommendations on how to do so? i'd guess it's some kind of plate with a threaded attachment but i can't find anything in my searches.
Search for a baby wall plate, I custom made mine and it is briefly visible in our Martini Splash episode. Cheers
Would be great to see your take on a long exposure product shot.
Definitely! Have a great video in the works regarding that, stay tuned!
Excellent tutorial thanks for sharing! Quick question, what did you use to attach the plexiglas to the stand?
Thanks in advance!
Hey Jean! Thanks. It's a nut welded to a metal plate -- it is explained in our martini splash episode on our channel too!

Thanks Josh. When I scan through the shots at 4:19 -- this is literally just me putting the frames on "lighten" blending mode without editing needed!
Cool, thanks👏
Josh Stubbs No prob at all, it's my honour!

Absolutely, that episode is in the works!
What software are you using in studio when combining the two images that are lit left and right side? Seemed so easy to combine the two images
Photoshop > Set top layer to lighten mode
Sorry, but when you say "lighten mode" are you talking about blend modes in PS?
Yes Mark!
Amazing! How far is the background from the shooting table?
About 2 meteres here! Farther it is away, easier it is to keep it dark before introducing the back glow! (-:
Hello. I have a question. I am curious about the size of the soft box to use when shooting. I also want to know the grid.
Hey there! I linked some gear in the description. I use a 8"x36" stripbox with no grid, though a grid came with it! Best of luck and thanks for tuning in.
workphlo Thank you so much. I'm always waiting for your lecture.

What do you use to attach the acrylic sheet to a stand so securely?
It is resting on a metal palte - secured with a nut welded to it. Check out our Martini Splash episode for a visual.
Can you make a quick video on how you did that in Lightroom? I always paint in the layers as masks and it takes forever.
Sure James! I will release more detailed composites like this soon, though this is simply stacking the 4 exposures and putting them on "lighten" blending mode. No local masking needed necessarily!
+workphlo Were you using 'lighten blending mode' on LR or PS? Its an visually impressive tutorial. Would be good to see the post production details.

global.001 I think all Adobe programs have the same rules that dictate lighten mode, but PS for me personally!
Ken McArthur Photography Yes, a clear bottle will work too! Would love to see that result
